just one lot today - still not entirely sure what gets into the top 10 and what doesn't a couple of major SHOCKS for people who remember what my top 20 was like last year... 16 just looking - stereophonics life is what you make of it, yet most of us just fakeanother top ten casualty - this used to be my second favourite song there might not seem like much remarkable about it from a musical point of view (ok, there isn't , but there's a lot of important memories tied up in this song for me. and for that, i have to love it. sorry and all that 17 sit down, stand up - radiohead walk into the jaws of hell we can wipe you out. anytime. THE RAINDROPSthat's right, it's been OUSTED my former radiohead number one slips to second place. but what has replaced it? as a clue, both songs have something in common - spine-tingling, haunting AWESOMENESS. 18 christopher's river - biffy clyro our shadows softly on the grass, day would break we'd have our laughsnot quite biffy's usual self-contradicting, twangy fare, this is nevertheless their best. its best quality is its simplicity - it's just an absolutely gorgeous slow song. oh, and i relate to it a lot 19 love will tear us apart - joy division do you cry out in your sleep all my failings expose?my knowledge of joy division is sadly lacking on many fronts. still, even i know this one, and anyone will tell you that it has to be one of the greatest and most moving love songs ever written. and i've just bought one of their albums 20 insomnia - feeder drinking myself to sleep again night nurse pills to keep me saneafter taking a momentous rise, this one looked very much like it might finish off as my favourite feeder song... but not so. one of many i wanted in my top 15, and it still just about makes the top 20 short, fast and frenetic - the band at their best.

get the tissues out... this is a very sobby group 11 a life less ordinary - ash so take me in your arms again, lead me in my dreams againgah! i wanted this to be in my top 10 so much this song does absolutely everything right - the intro, the drumming on the chorus, and of course the lyrics... aceness itself! a totally new entry that replaces girl from mars as ash's best song. it's LOVELY 12 switching off - elbow is this making sense? what am i trying to say? early evening june, this room and a radio play this i need to save i choose my final thoughts, today...once more, the incredibleness of elbow gets the better of me. only very recently released as part of an ep (it escapes the 2004 rule because i got the album a year ago ), it shows them doing what makes me adore them so much - making incredibly moving music out of a simple formula. where other bands would have to hire a small string orchestra for a similar effect, they do it with the inventiveness of their own genius. now go to the elbow forum and worship them 13 comforting sounds - mew into your house, why don't we share our solitude? nothing is pure anymore but solitudethere aren't very many things in the world more beautiful than a slowly-building, er, slow song - and there aren't very many slow-building slow songs better than mew's best it starts with a couple of notes and develops into an epic mess of violins, drums and wind instruments - one of the finest instrumentals EVER. it rises a little on last year's position, which just goes to show how gorgeous it is. 14 anthems for a seventeen year-old girl - broken social scene used to be one of the rotten ones and i liked you for that now you're all gone got your make-up on and you're not coming back can't you come backgotta love them builders if everything broken social scene have done is this good, i've been living in a box another new entry, this song overwhelms because of its simplicity... the constant repetition of those words over the music, string instruments doing what they were meant for... park that car drop that phone... heartbreaking loveliness. 15 teardrop - massive attack love, love is a verb love is a doing word fearless on my breathslipping slightly from last year, my favourite massive attack song nevertheless loses no points. elizabeth fraser's eerie vocals on this song rank amongst the best i've ever heard, though perhaps the best feature of this song is the way the beat sounds like a beating heart... more chilling than chillout next up... THE TOP TEN!

6 sonnet - the verve why can't you see that nature has its way of warning me? eyes open wide, looking at the heavens with a tear in my eyea gem amongst unearthed gems... i'd forgotten all about this one until about 18 months ago from the opening guitar chords to the fading violin strokes, i love absolutely everything about this song... the echoing lyrics, ashcroft's vocals, the way it builds and descends into an instrumental mess in the characteristic way that made the verve such a great band... hence its small rise 7 there she goes - the la's and i just can't contayeeain this feeling that remayeeayeeainsi know absolutely nothing about the la's. not that it matters, because this - one of the most insanely happy, jangly, catchy songs of its genre in existence - is musical genius. that TUNE... it really does take something for a such a gushingly ecstatic song to make you feel as happy as it sounds, which is what this one manages in less than 3 minutes. and that's why everyone should ADORE it ;D 8 yellow - coldplay your skin, oh yeah your skin and bones turn into something beautiful and you know for you i'd bleed myself dryi don't know of a single person who doesn't like this song... it's the song that brought coldplay to my attention (as it did so many), and that became an anthem for some of the worst - and, later, some of the best - periods in my life even the video, a brilliantly simple idea, is almost on a par with the greatness of the song... 9 brothers in arms - dire straits there's so many different worlds, so many different suns and we have just one world, but we live in different onesah, dire straits, the pinnacle of dadrock this is one of my father's favourite songs ever, and it's easy to see why. a powerfully atmospheric song, supported by some fine guitarwork and beautifully-written lyrics, it conveys a poignant message... we're fools to make war on our brothers in arms... 10 just a day - feeder all by mySELF 'cos i don't wanna drag you down, hold you down 'cos you're a FRIEND, i blame mySELF i guess you think it's funny now, funny noooow do do do DOO do do do DOO do do do DOO etc.now this is what we call progress... this has shot up from nowhere to nick the final spare place in the top 10, and is now most definitely feeder's best song... conventional rock at its greatest ;D *moshfest* best middle-8 of any rock song, EVER. no question. top FIVE tomorrow...

6 sonnet - the verve ;D;D;D;D why can't you see that nature has its way of warning me? eyes open wide, looking at the heavens with a tear in my eyeexcellent choice of lyric... excellent choice of song... i've liked this one since now 40. i remember repeatedly listening to 'sonnet', 'teardrop', and, erm, world cup 98 footy songs, on a boat going round zakynthos... even then, i really liked it 7 there she goes - the la's ;D/ and i just can't contayeeain this feeling that remayeeayeeainsgrowing on me doodoodoodee doodoodoodee doodoodoodoodoodoodoodee, etc. 8 yellow - coldplay ;D;D;D;D;D your skin, oh yeah your skin and bones turn into something beautiful and you know for you i'd bleed myself dryi don't know of a single person who doesn't like this song... it's the song that brought coldplay to my attention, too 9 brothers in arms - dire straits ;D;D;D;D there's so many different worlds, so many different suns and we have just one world, but we live in different onesah, dire straits, the pinnacle of dadrock in this house, also 10 just a day - feeder all by mySELF 'cos i don't wanna drag you down, hold you down 'cos you're a FRIEND, i blame mySELF i guess you think it's funny now, funny noooow do do do DOO do do do DOO do do do DOO etc.;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D :yippee: ;D SECOND BEST SONG OF EVEEEEER!!!Can't wait for the top five... and now, ladies and gentlemen... THE TOP FIVE ;D let us begin with... and the truth's unwinding, scraping away...
at my MIND... please stop asking me to describe...5 CITIZEN ERASED - MUSE for one moment, i wish you'd hold your stage with no feelings at aaaaall open-minded, i'm sure i used to be so freeeeeee...it opens with the tortured, electrified screech of guitars, and ends with a slow song as gorgeous as unintended the way the second verse mirrors the first, total change of pace without changing the mood, has to be awed... it storms through over 7 minutes of transition, developing into that beautifully haunting ending... erase all the memorieeeees, they'll only briiiing us pain... muse are just so, so good at this sort of classically-inspired, angsty rock, and nowhere can it be seen better than here. "what to listen to alone in the rain at night, part one".

in the beginning there were answers, then they came along and changed...4 IN REMOTE PART/SCOTTISH FICTION - IDLEWILD it isn't in the castle, it isn't in the mist it's the calling of the waters as they break to show the new black death with reactors aglow do you think your security will keep you in purity? you will not shake us off above or below scottish friction, scottish fiction"what to listen to alone in the rain at night, part two" this really is a unique song... i can't name another attempt at amalgamating poetry and music that has ended up so powerful and soul-stirringly effective... and without a dash of cheese as if the first part isn't beautiful enough, it plunges into a thrashing instrumental where it emerges as edwin morgan's lovely poem spoken over those guitars ;D... not only is it a far cry from the rest of idlewild's material, but it's also so unlike anything else i've ever heard. muse, take note - THIS is how you close an album.

nothing to win and nothing left to lose...3 WITH OR WITHOUT YOU - U2 see the stones set in your eyes see the thorn twist in the your side i'll wait for you sleight of hand and twist of fate on a bed of nails she makes me wait and i'll wait without you...like the one before it, another non-mover a slow starter, it builds over the simple bassline with growing percussion and vocal power into an achingly, incredibly stirring anthem with so much emotion in it that it seems on bursting point for the first 3 minutes... and you giiive yourself awaaay, and you giiive yourself awaaay, and you GIVE, and you GIVE, and you GIVE YOURSELF AWAAAY... u2 have mastered the rock anthem, but there is real audible anguish in this song that not even they have been able to recreate since. just MARVELLOUS...

ooooooooooooooooo oo OO ooo OO, oo ooo oo, oooo ooo oooo ooooo...2 PYRAMID SONG[/i] - RADIOHEAD i jumped in the river and what did i see? black-eyed angels swimming with me a moon full of stars and astral cars and all the figures i used to see all my lovers were there with me all my past and futures and we all went to heaven in a little row boat there was nothing to fear, nothing to doubt...may i present... the new radiohead number one, and the second greatest song ever recorded. as spine-tingling as an icy shower, as soothing as warm water, it thrills, chills and moves like nothing else on earth. there was a time when i never thought i'd like something with such prominent soul and jazz undertones, but we all make mistakes just everything about it - the violins over the piano, the way the vocals split in the second verse... it's the sort of haunting song you can lose yourself in. listen in the dark for best effects
