Starting the top 40 with... 40. Arctic Monkeys - I Bet That You Look Good On The Dancefloor [2005](A much as I hate using this expression) IBYLGOTD is undeniably a tuuuuuuune with a capital T. It's one of those huge hits that doesn't manage to get overplayed or lose its energy that made it so good in the first place. I remember I was in beautiful York the weekend it got to #1 and I hadn't even heard the song! Unfortunately, they got ridiculously overrated after just one song.

39. CORD - Winter [2006]A minor top 40 hit in June 2006, Winter was one of those songs that I didn't appreciate fully at the time but got into big time later on. A very powerful and moving song in its own way. (In retrospect, the follow-up Sea Of Trouble should have charted as well)

50. Liberty X - Just A Little [2002]Sexy...everything about you so sexy indeed. A quality pop song that I couldn't get out of my head at the time! You chose wisely.

38. Longview - Further [2003/2005]Another one of those songs that I probably wouldn't have fallen in love with if circumstances were different. I bought this in a bargain bin at 50p because I recall vaguely liking it at the time. After buying on it, it grew on me so much more. It was disappointed by the 2005 release though, because it wasn't as good as the '03 version and it was rather pointless.

37. The Killers - Mr Brightside [2004]Mr Brightside is another one of those songs that has haunted me since its release. Heartbreaking yet anthemic at the same time. First of two songs from the Killers in the top 100.

36. Will Young - All Time Love [2006]An extremely significant song in my life. By this stage I was in my last year in university but was very keen to move on. I had been toying with Manchester Uni to do a postgrad. But when I was going back to Durham for the term after Christmas I found it much more difficult than usual. This song was out at the time, and I associate it with my decision to do my postgrad in Belfast rather than make things harder for myself in Manchester. And it has been one of the best decisions I've ever made! A gorgeous song too

35. Andreas Johnson - Glorious [2000]Glorious by name, glorious by nature. It's funny because my tastes have changed so much since 2000 (I adored Scooch for Christ's sake) but this is a song which I loved at the time and still love to this day. Also, it has probably the best intro of any song in the top 100!

34. Nelly Furtado - Try [2004]Try is Nelly Furtado at her absolute best both vocally and musically. A genuinely moving song that is vastly underrated. The album version is much better than the single edit because it included that fantastic bit at the end that really lifts the song IMO

Have you heard 'Go Either Way' by Cord? No. I didn't realise it was a single until I saw it in wiki when getting pictures for the thread. Must check it out. Is it much in the same vein as the other two singles?

33. Willy Mason - Oxygen [2005]Debut single from the excellent Willy Mason. A very simplistic song, but is lyrically it is very engaging.

32. The Cardigans - Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds) [2006]I do find it a real shame with the Cardigans - when they were at their most commercially successful, their music was IMO the weakest of their whole career, but when they were less successful (see Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity) they were fantastic. And this was their best track from this period. Never got a release in the UK - shame .

31. Maximo Park - Apply Some Pressure [2005]A certain Mr Andy Riley is blame for this one . As I said earlier, Maximo Park never fail to deliver with absolute anthems like this. When Apply Some Pressure was first out they were playing at a music shop near us in Durham. I wasn't into them as much as I am now and stupidly decided to go to a lecture rather than hear them live . Top 30 to follow tomorrow (perhaps), with a song showing just how the mighty have fallen in recent times and another crying out to be covered as an X Factor winner's song...

30. Lutricia McNeal - The Greatest Love You'll Never Know [1998]I can't find a YouTube link ( ) so if you haven't heard it, you are just going to have to take my word that this is a textbook cheesy-reality-TV-winner's-song. But it is an absolutely fantastic ballad that deserved much better. I only really got into this around 2000/2001-ish, but it still sounds great.

29. Feeder - Just A Day [2001]My friend Mark is an absolutely colossal Feeder fan, and he got me into them. A few months after he converted me Just A Day come out and was a surprisingly big hit (I'm sure it's their biggest selling single of their career?). Forget Buck Rogers - this is Feeder's finest rock moment. Two more songs from them to come though

28. The Libertines - Time For Heroes [2003]Before he was off his head of crack constantly, Pete Doherty was able to write gems like this. It is tragic that everything he has released since the Libertines' second album has been atrocious. But anyway, it remains a fantastic song, particularly the lyrics.

27. Siobhan Donaghy - Twist Of Fate [2003]Second song on the top 100 featuring Shivvy. I adored this when it came out five years ago. At the time I was working in a god awful clothes shop for the summer. The assistant manager made my life hell, so I took some kind of solace in the message of this song

26. Snow Patrol - Chocolate [2004]No specific memories or real sentimentality with this song - I just loved it at the time, and for some reason it hasn't work off for me - it still sounds fantastic today. Next five tomorrow - featuring a song because of which I lost a fiver because I was convinced it wouldn't be a #1 hit...

25. Michael Andrews and Gary Jules - Mad World [2003]In October 2003 I watched Donnie Darko (possibly the best film of all time) with my uni room-mate. At the end, I heard this song and was absolutely mesmerised by it. Now, soon after we started hearing Mad World on the radio, and which point my roommate made a prediction that it would be a #1 hit. I thought there was no chance - it was out Christmas week against the Pop Idols and the Darkness, and it was on the Now album which had sold a lot by that stage. When this ended up at midweek #2 behind the Christmas song from the Darkness, I knew I had lost my bet as it would have been #1 after Christmas. Probably the best bet I have ever lost, as I was delighted it was the #1 it deserved to be

24. Michelle Branch - Goodbye To You [2002]I loved Michelle Branch's The Spirit Room album. Goodbye To You was supposed to be the third single, but I don't think it ever materialised here. I liked the album version of the song, but it wasn't until I caught a trailer for Two Months Notice I think, and it featured the more upbeat radio edit of the song (as per the YouTube link). I had never heard this version before and adored it straightaway (possibly because it is similar in sound to another song of hers that is to come)
