I just love the idea that the Welsh would vote for Ryan Giggs en masse when his commitment to Wales almost extended to actually playing for them. The mass Giggs vote is more likely to come from Man U fans than the Welsh.

Kevin Garside in the Daily Telegraph is today nominating Ryan Giggs as his winner. He also suggests Sebastian Vettel for the overseas award which seriously damages the credibility of his Giggs argument.

My thoughts:
Should be Button all the way for me. Came from nowhere to win the world title this year and probably won't get a better chance to win SPOTY than this year. Tom Daley is a contender but i think he's too young and will have better chances in the future. It would be fitting for him to win it should he get Olympic gold in 2012. Very strong contender for Young Personality of the year though?
Other than that the rest of the Top 3 is between Hay, Idowu, Ennis, and possibly Giggs or Strauss. Other than Button it looks wide open for the Top 3. Will be interesting to see if the clash with X Factor affects the voting in any way, ie makes it more unpredictable with less votes.

Kevin Garside in the Daily Telegraph is today nominating Ryan Giggs as his winner. Martin Samuel in the Mail seemed to be implying the same.

And Hugh McIlvanney in the Sunday Times.
The Man Ure lovefest is in session. Talk about sucking the Premiership teat. They should be barred from sports reporting.

Celts should be banned from voting. Leon Jackson, McManus, those kilted tw*ts, those big-haired tw*ts, all thanks to the unEnglish. Even Gemini "won" the nomination for Song For Britain because Scotland voted for a Scot and the points difference screwed the proper entry. *ahem* Point proved.

That's just taking anti-MU bias to a ridiculous extreme. If Giggs was English he may well have won the award before now having played in a number or World Cups and European Championships. OK so he's probably won it partly due to his achievements over nearly 20 years but you can't really argue that he doesn't deserve something after having excelled at the highest level for so long.

Meh, Button should have won it. Giggs would be a good shout for a lifetime/career achievement award, but Macheda was more instrumental in United's title win than he was.

Ryan Giggs is a true star who has proven his worth time and time again for well over a decade. Jenson Button got lucky.
I'm not sure how people can complain about Celtic voting.

How did Leon Jackson win X Factor? His stellar talent or a block vote from Caledonia? That's just taking anti-MU bias to a ridiculous extreme. On that basis so does Gary Speed, who had the burden of playing with not so good teams. It's not school sports day when everyone gets prizes. And I doubt he would have won any had he been English. Only 4 English footballers had won it and one of them captained the team to the World Cup.

Ryan Giggs is a true star who has proven his worth time and time again for well over a decade. Which is why I think he's more suited to a lifetime award. He played fewer games than ever in 2008/09. Jenson's back-from-the-brink story was probably the main individual achievement of the year, and he drove consistently to claim a deserved F1 crown after years of suffering with crap cars.

And not forgetting Jessica Ennis, who won the world heptathlon championship on a return from injury, the world heavyweight boxing champion (something Britain has only had about three of in the past century), an Ashes-winning captain who led the team of the year, the first Briton ever to win four Tour de France stages in the same year and so on.
Beaten by a substitute.

He is a poor driver who was gifted a great car. We'll see how good he really is next season.

There's not much talent any year, but the point still stands. Is Rhydian Welsh? I assume he got the Welsh block vote in turn.

And all of the English winners won because they were the outstanding English player in a major tournament - something well within Giggs' capabilities if he'd had the chance.

Well, we'll never know. Point is, he did nothing special in 2009. The final ten had a dozen major championships between them. On a world level. But that's ochlocracy for you.
