What would you have been saying if Rhydian had won? There was no English talent that year. There's not much talent any year, but the point still stands. Is Rhydian Welsh? I assume he got the Welsh block vote in turn. The point is the only possible winners based on talent were Rhydian (Welsh) and Leon (Scottish). So I don't think your argument holds up at all.

Well, we'll never know. Point is, he did nothing special in 2009. The final ten had a dozen major championships between them. On a world level. But that's ochlocracy for you. Denise Lewis probably deserved it more than Steve Redgrave the year he won but I bet you wouldn't begrudge him that victory.

Well, I have been called a winker. I think. The point is the only possible winners based on talent were Rhydian (Welsh) and Leon (Scottish). So I don't think your argument holds up at all. Other than their presence in the competition or the final might have been down to home votes. Certainly, on your facts there was no bandwagon in favour of an English participant. And I understand votes for the Double Take Brothers in this year's came from Dublin.

The Republic of Ireland cannot vote. Please get your facts right. Can via proxy webservers. This was the point of the article. While this is possible, it's not trivial, and I doubt that a significant proportion of the vote would have come from people from the Republic of Ireland taking the trouble to go online, Google for a method, and vote by proxy. Back on topic, please? ;D

Like how come the cricket team won the team award ahead of Brawn? That beggared any common sense whatsoever.

Is it worth even having this award anymore. Giggs' achievements in 2009 are close to zero. VERY embarrassing for the BBC and the award

Voting figures for the top 3:
Giggs 151,842 (29.4%) Button 96,770 (18.7%) Ennis 80,469 (15.6%)
Total votes: 516,473

So not many more than 0.5 million votes cast if those figures are right

Down 200,000 on last year but it wasn't up against X-Factor then...
Down 114,000 on 2007.
Giggs' winning total is down 132,000 on Chris Hoy's and down 26,000 on Joe Calzaghe in 2007.

Maybe I'm not seeing it as I'm not English but can the Ashes be the only thing taken into consideration which seems to be the case here? Apart from a recent win in a 20-20 series in South Africa in addition to the Ashes did the English Cricket Team not have a pretty dire year or am I missing something?

If this was horse racing the result would be suspended pending an inquiry!
A total outsider suddenly flies in from 100-1 to second favourite and runs away with it.

But the award is based on his achievements in 2009, which as we know are minimal and nothing on an international front.

Rightly or wrongly, The Ashes is by far the single most important thing in English cricket. Aside from that, England were inconsistent, rather than dire. They did OK in the World 20-20. They did reasonably well in the Champions Trophy, getting to the semis and they beat the West Indies at home in the test series but they were hammered by Australia in the ODI series and lost a test series in the West Indies for the first time in 10 years. If Jenson Button's success was as much down to the car as you say it is, surely Brawn should've won the team award?
