MY CHART SEPTEMBER 14th 2014

1 RE Banks - Brain VIDEO (14 weeks; peak #1) 4th WEEK AT #1 IN TOTAL!

I wish the production on this was louder and less muddy. It really lacks the earth and bassiness of the rest of the album - and you don't get this impression from just listening to YouTube or streams (or downloads to such an extent) where everything is on the same level and there's no bass difference - you have to turn it up way louder than the rest on a CD put through a player. Maybe the muddy effect is intentional given the subject matter? It is her best and tops out her EIGHT entries on this week's chart - it's not an entire top 8 though which would have been a first. As i was shopping i spied one of my fave albums of the year (UK release) and had to get the CD as it was quite cheap...

Now this is an old single that really hit me upon CD purchase (the bass issue again - this time the effect is lesser on non-physical players)! One of the few more uptempo tracks on the album (the deluxe version) - only made #49 originally when Warm Water was hitting my #2.

1 NEW Banks - Goddess STREAM (deluxe)

I have to say i could do without a couple of ballads on here - Something New is nice enough though inessential - but Under The Table is so overwrought it's verging on Lady Gaga at her lounge music / pretentious worst. And starting the album with the unremarkable Alibi is strange!
I have new love for old single Fall Over now i have it on CD and it's a shame there's not more like it - or more like the stunning Brain. It does get a little bit samey and it can't be called a classic. I still give it 4 out of 5. And the artwork inside - cripes, them boobies!

Of the songs i didn't know F*ck Em Only We Know is the best and You Should Know Where I'm Coming From is great.

Shame she's been derailed by FKA Twigs after Radio 1 and Mercury both orgasmed over her relatively disappointing album (her EP2 was a more risky, exciting set than the album, good as it was). And whoever markets her is doing a bad job if her CDs can't even sell on Amazon (i see the prices are much lower on some other sites though). Though she's doing better in her home country, rather ironically. She broke in UK but did groundwork over there most recently. She's ours, dammit! :evil: :lol:

Hope it stays top 20 for Sunday at least.

Love the Banks commentary, absolutely loving the album, some of those tracks would make a great Bond theme especially Beggin For Thread and Drowning. Fall Over is another great tune, I do love the ballads more after a few more listens to the album. I have to agree Banks is been overshadowed by FKA Twigs' album, if only Banks released her album much earlier as most of her material has been floating on you tube for ages.

His debut full length from 92 and one of the most influential dance albums (it's not really ambient) of all time. I feel rather ashamed that i never heard it till now. I've heard shades of it in Biosphere and other IDM acts that it inspired.

Gorgeous album co-composed by Madonna legend Patrick Leonard. Did I Ever Love You? is incredibly moving and one of the best things he's ever recorded.

The title track - roughly meaning Completely Crazy - is quite distinctly irksome. Thankfully there are several nice moments afterwards.

That rare thing on my album chart - a climber! Like Holly, it's a return to form - like Holly, it has a not-so-great single leading it with Elevation.

This was a surprise 2-years-in-the-making allstar advert for the BBC unveiled midweek. Proceeds go to Children In Need (in the fashion of the previous allstar video Perfect Day which made my top 20) with downloads out now and CD formats out nearer the telethon. Wilson gets a main credit in listings being the writer but the artwork credits BBC Music and the BBC Music site calls the ensemble The Impossible Orchestra - a better name, i think.

Highlights: the pop blast of Champagne Kisses, the eighties smooth of Midnight Caller, the title track, Want Your Feeling, You And I (Forever) and the mega-hit in waiting Pieces. Not quite the classic Devotion was but a great set - only Sweetest Song falls a bit flat.

Great polished but gritty country rock with alternating female/male vocals. Modern country doesn't get much better unless you're named Underwood.

For some reason you can't stream two of the tracks in UK - so here's a link to the (disappointing) team-up of Charli XCX and Simon Le Bon: AUDIO (pitched). Better are the tracks by Grace Jones and Bat For Lashes and the whole thing is a Lorde album by default with her touch even rubbing off on Ariana Grande as you heard.

I discovered today that exercise books are no longer widely sold. :cry: I've used them for my charts since 1987 (sales) and 1993 (personal). Now you have disposable folders and refill pads that fall to bits within months or days. Exercise books were sturdy things that lasted - i was forced to get a Fabriano EcoQua Bioprima book which is 3 times the cost but the only comparable thing in terms of compact size, durability and the lined pages. Maybe it's to do with schools no longer using them?
