Root's 200 also made him the first player to score a double century in his 100th test. He really is in tremendous form at the moment with three big centuries so far this year.

Another good day for England, reducing India to 257-6 having been all out for 578. Dom Bess took 4-55 with Jofra Archer picking up two early wickets as England look set to have a commanding 1st innings lead. India following on is very unlikely as England will not want to bat last on a pitch that is finally offering some turn.
Meanwhile, in Bangladesh, the West Indies chased down 395 to win the 1st test in Chittagong by 3 wickets, with debutant Kyle Mayers hitting 210 not out. His 40 in the 1st innings means he currently has a test batting average of 250.

Furthermore, Mayers was part of a 216-run partnership with fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner. It was also the fifth highest successful run chase ever in a test match.

England need nine wickets on the final day to win the 1st test, with India chasing an unlikely 420 to win.
After India were all out for 337 shortly before lunch on day 4, England didn't enforce the follow-on, instead looking to score quick runs to put the game out of India's reach. They looked to be doing that but found themselves increasingly restricted as the innings went on, eventually being dismissed for 178, with Joe Root top scoring with 40 and Ashwin taking 6-61 for the hosts.
Jack Leach managed to bowl Rohit Sharma to leave India 39-1 at the close, still needing 381 to win.

A terrific win for England, sparked by one of the best overs ever bowled by an Englishman as Jimmy Anderson took two wickets in four balls, both clean bowled, with an lbw in between that was only not out on umpire's call. Anderson finished with 3-17, with Jack Leach taking 4-76 as England bowled India out during the afternoon session for 192, sealing a 227-run victory, in what was a near-perfect performance.
England have now won six tests in a row away from home and have moved to the top of the World Test Championship standings, though they must win two of the remaining three tests to make this summer's final.
While Virat Kohli is playing well for India, this is the second consecutive heavy defeat under his captaincy, having led the side in the 1st test in Australia, in which they were bowled out for just 36 in their 2nd innings and lost by 8 wickets. He left the tour after that match to go on paternity leave and in his absence, Rahane led India to a 2-1 series victory, including becoming the first team to beat Australia at the Gabba in 32 years (and the first Asian team ever) in the final test.
Leach's 4-76 from 26 overs gave him exactly the same bowling figures as Dom Bess in the 1st innings. It's the first time this has happened in test cricket.

Second test getting underway in Chennai.
England make four changes from the first test. Archer misses out with an elbow injury, Anderson and Buttler are rested and Bess is dropped. In come Olly Stone, who wins his second cap, Stuart Broad, Ben Foakes and Moeen Ali.
Three changes for India with Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav and debutant Axar Patel coming in for Bumrah, Sundah and Nadeem.
India have won the toss and will bat first. There will also be 15,000 fans inside the ground.
Channel 4 have gone for a change in their studio setup, going for a three-person line-up instead of two. Andrew Strauss and Ebony Rainford-Brent are keeping Rishi Persad company.

Stone strikes with his 3rd ball! Gill gone lbw not playing a shot.
India 0-1!
Stone's only previous test was the one-off match against Ireland in 2019. He took 3-29 in the 1st innings but didn't get to bowl in the 2nd innings, as England only needed to use Broad and Woakes, who between them bowled Ireland out for 38 in just 15.4 overs.

Bizarre selection dropping Anderson and bess and putting stone in hes played one test. Leaving out Anderson isn't bizarre at all. It's clear they're going with a rotation policy with Anderson and Broad now in order to prolong both of their test careers. Bess is maybe slightly unlucky but he was poor in the 2nd innings of the 1st test. Stone is a straight replacement for Archer as he offers more pace than Woakes.

Would of played both to try and put India out the series you need your best 11 to win in India.I can't see Anderson going on much beyond the ashes anyway.

But if you keep playing them they cease to be part of the best 11. And on this pitch the spinners will have much more of a say, as shown today.

India on course for victory in the 2nd test after a day in which 15 wickets fell.
Resuming on 300-6, India were all out for 329 but that already looked a good score on pitch that has been rapidly deteriorating since the afternoon of day 1. Moeen Ali finished with 4-128, Leach was less expensive with 2-78. Olly Stone was impressive with 3-47, including the final two wickets as he mopped up the tail.
In reply, England's batsmen struggled badly against India's spinners and collapsed to 52-5, before a mini-recovery saw them at least avoid the follow-on as they were dismissed for 134, Ben Foakes top scoring with 42 not out. Ashwin finished with 5-43 for the hosts.
Jack Leach got Gill lbw before the close but India are 54-1, a lead of 249.
A lot will be said of the pitch. You're bound to get turn in India but usually during the last couple of days, as we saw in the first test. If we saw this pitch in the County Championshipm serious questions would be asked. This pitch seems to have taken home advantage to extreme levels, beginning to break up almost from the start of the match, with the toss proving more decisive than ever. Had India not won that toss, we could've been entering the final days of Kohli's captaincy...

I love how the pitch has deteriorated so we are out for 134, yet India can make 54 and only lose one wicket?

They have a huge lead that England probably wouldn't chase down even if they declared now. They can afford to play shots and score quickly without worrying whether they get out or not. It's a completely different approach when you start the innings 200 in front. Should've been two wickets as well as Foakes missed a clear stumping chance.

A huge win for India, winning by 317 runs after England were all out for 164 in their 2nd innings. Spinners took all 10 wickets. Moeen Ali top scored with 43 off 18 balls as he threw caution to the wind with the game already gone.
Whilst England didn't bat particularly well, the key difference between the sides was the performance of the bowlers. England's spinners, whilst capable of taking wickets, don't have the consistency of the Indian bowlers. The result was India scoring 100 more than they should've in both innings.
Ravichandran Ashwin was named man of the match with figures of 8-96, as well as his superb century batting at 8 in the 2nd innings.
The final two tests will be played in Ahmedabad, the first of which will be a day/night match with a pink ball, starting next Wednesday. In the only previous D/N test in India, their spinners failed to take a single wicket.
Moeen has opted to fly home (even though this was the only test he played in this winter) but Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran and Mark Wood are re-joining the squad.

Hopefully a day night match may help us then, as we look woeful against spin, same when India come over here and the ball seams a lot more I guess?

Hopefully a day night match may help us then, as we look woeful against spin, same when India come over here and the ball seams a lot more I guess? Definitely a fair point about the different conditions. India struggle when it swings a lot (which actually did quite a bit in the 1st test). Day/night should help England but much will depend on the pitch too and whether it's set up to turn from day 1. I still think the key difference is the bowling rather than the batting. India's spinners are able to keep the pressure on and not bowl too many bad deliveries. England's spinners were still taking wickets when they were bowling well but just couldn't get the right line and length consistently, which is where India were able to score easy runs.

3rd test underway, day/night. England won the toss and chose to bat and subsequently solved the problem of how to bat at night by losing all their wickets during the daytime.

As a huge Cricket fan & former PM John Major would say on occasion "Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear".
Looking at the England team's selection it looks like having a Day-Night Test has confused them with their XI selection being far more appropriate for a Test match in England. Whilst India's spinners took 9 wickets for the cost of 64 runs!
