-- ( -- ) Your Song - Billy Paul
This is another occasion where I'm influenced by my chart of 1977 at the time because Hot Chocolate was a #1 then, but the difference is that the order was reversed and Queen replaced them at #1 and then stayed on top for 4 weeks, so having had 4 weeks of Queen, Hot Chocolate now claim what will probably be the first of 2 weeks on top.
Among the new entries is Gary Glitter, the "not so bad" ones from this era. "Pledging My Love" was listed as a double A-side, the other song is on the latest playlist and we know what will shortly because of Elvis himself.

3 of the 4 highest entries are cover version. The Jam are original.
"Black Betty" is an adaptation of a 1930s song by Huddie Ledbetter, performed under the name of Ram Jam but actually it's primarily ex-Lemon Pipers guitarist Bill Bartlett, who had recorded the song unsuccessfully with his previous band Starstruck, and used the recording for his new band Ram Jam, with some other bits added in. In any case, it's the guitar on this track that really makes you sit up and take notice.
You Got What It Takes was the first NM #1 of the 1960s for Marv Johnson. Dave Clark Five also recorded a version but I wasn't charting covers like that at the time.
Nights On Broadway was a hit for the Bee Gees just two years ago. It wasn't a UK hit but Candi Staton's cover was. For the Bee Gees it reached NM #3, the same peak position as both "Jive Talking" and "You Should Be Dancing". Let's see what they have in store for the next year...
Float On was written by the co-written by James Mitchell (of Detroit Emeralds) brother of Paul Mitchell who is the "Paul" in the band, and has them all giving their star signs and what they are looking for in a woman and asking them to take their hand.

"Telephone Man" was # 1 in my chart. I know you hate "I Feel Love" and I guess you'd like "Love's Unkind". Not sure your feelings on "Down Deep Inside", I guess somewhere in-between more on the negative side for you. That one's on my current playlist. You'd probably like "I Remember Yesterday" a bit more too, so I think you'd say they got increasingly better.
Of Donna Summer's singles up to this point I actually like "Winter Melody" more than any of the others.

-- ( -- ) Swayin' To The Music - Johnny Rivers
Ram Jam leap up to #1.
Not a week for big entries, the Stranglers go in highest but outside the top 10.
Yet another 60s artist makes a comeback with a disco song, this time Danny Williams, who had a UK #1 in 1961 with "Moon River". It didn't top my chart peaking at #6 but his last hit "White On White" reached #27 in 1964. This song makes you want to drink Martinis. Anytime, anyplace, anywhere... Carter USM did a song based on that too.

-- ( -- ) If I Have To Go Away - Jigsaw
At this point in time, the biggest hit ever in my chart for a solo female artist is "You're So Vain" by Carly Simon. She has had other hits since then, but her James Bond theme "Nobody Does It Better" from "The Spy Who Loved Me" gets this week's highest entry and she's set to have another big hit, although circumstances coming up makes her highly unlikely to get a #1.
Spanish Stroll enters at #21. When I hear this I want to sing "My Best Friend's Girl" a lot and the two would be great candidates for the "mash-up" round on here. I found Showaddywaddy had apparently once covered it as a medley.
Below that, another Ramones song, and Steve Gibbons Band doing a cover of Chuck Berry.

I'm sure we all know what will be number one next week. In any case, the entry at #12 was credited to The Rods but it's easier to use the full band name, both because that's how it's listed on Spotify, and also if I ever look up their chart history or aggregate it in any way.
And we also have the 1977 Space, having had Mr Big and Blue earlier in the year.
And we have a John Williams enter this week and there's a different one although not sure his 1979 version of Cavatina will chart as at the time I only charted The Shadows. He will chart as part of Sky in 1980 but isn't individually credited on it. Meco's version of the Star Wars theme is still eligible, partly because it's a different arrangement and partly because it medleys in another tune, and in my original 1977 chart I only charted the Meco version.

And so, the big news this week, the death of Elvis Presley aged just 42. Way Down becomes his 15th #1 drawing him level with the Beatles. In the UK it would bring him to 17 also drawing him level with the Beatles.
His first week at #1 was on 10 March 1956, and his 13th #1 "Return To Sender" topped the chart on 10 November 1962. Between then and now he has topped the chart just once.

Oh my, with Elvis dead I almost forgot this "tribute" song was going to come.. I get a double dose, there's an American one too. I also didn't realise the Dutch one was written by the same team who wrote the Eurovision winner for Teach In, in fact the singer was among those...

-- ( -- ) I Got To Sing - J.A.L.N Band -- ( -- ) Pipeline - Bruce Johnston -- ( -- ) It Was Almost Like A Song - Ronnie Milsap
This is actually the equivalent chart where Elvis Presley leapt from #42 to #4. The previous week the chart was published the day he died so obviously no reaction. The Floaters have the UK #1 this week, and David Soul enters the UK chart at quite a lowly #30 having entered the UK chart at #5 with his last single that didn't make the top. In my chart above it enters at #11 and it's clearly a great song. Written by Tony Macauley who has written so many hits going back to the 60s and Geoff Stephens who also has and even been #1 as a performer with the New Vaudeville Band. My reckoning is that Geoff Stephens has co-written 3 number ones in my chart (Tell Me When, Winchester Cathedral and Knock Knock Who's There), Tony Macauley just one (Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes).
Of course many will say that because Elvis entered at #46 then climbed to #42 the second week (before he died) that was always going to be a flop. We can't be certain because some other singles did that then became big hits. e.g. "Yes Sir I Can Boogie" by Baccara (which is on my current playlist) entered at #50 then stayed at #50 a second week before making its way up the chart.
This is the week the Boomtown Rats enter the chart. And at 12 I became a massive fan. Not that it was so immediate for me then, but the position it reached back then is the same it will reach now.
In the UK chart, "Black Is Black" was number 2 for Los Bravos and again for La Belle Epoque. The latter was a disco version and there were lots of different versions of it. One where they say "Black Is Black" once then there's some instrumental bit, and one where they say "Black Is Black" 4 times. I always preferred the one with the instrumental bit and that's the version I find on Spotify, although it's a lot shorter than the version I commonly heard - that compares with so many hits that seem to go on for more than 6 minutes right now (in their Spotify version, which probably is the album version). Stevie Wonder has a hit coming up that is 8 minutes 28 seconds and has no shorter version.
Gimme Dat Banana - I remember that on Top of the Pops. And the Adverts, who sing about someone on death row.

This is the week when Elvis Presley moved to #1 in the UK chart, but at the same time a bunch of old Elvis Presley hits entered the lower end leaving me with a very short playlist for this week (as they were not included). Thus I picked up a Donna Summer song that in the US has been co-credited with "I Feel Love", at least on the umdmusic site. Unlike most of the songs on the "I Remember Yesterday" album which were written by Giorgio Moroder with Belotte and Summer, it was written by Tony Macauley, who has written or co-written many hits including "Silver Lady" currently doing well. Donna Summer had 2 songs in the UK chart at this point, as I Feel Love had only just falled from #1 a few weeks earlier, and Down Deep Inside reached UK #5, and climbs to #8 on this chart which is higher than the #9 peak of I Feel Love.
George Benson's song was later covered by Whitney Houston. It was written by Michael Masser and Gerry Goffin, the latter of whom used to write songs with Carole King, who also currently has a song in the charts. He's now George "Good" Benson...

The Boomtown Rats knock Elvis Presley off number one. In my chart in 1977 that also happened but a couple of weeks later, as in this chart we see Elvis get to #1 on his second week just after he died, but in my chart he only entered the week after that.
"From New York To LA" is an adaptation of a foreign song with new English lyrics. "Thunder In My Heart" would later provide Leo Sayer his second UK #1 when adapted by Meck.

Let's get back to this
17 September 1977

31 ( -- ) Search And Destroy - Dictators 32 ( 39 ) I Believe You - Dorothy Moore 33 ( 21 ) Something Better Change - Stranglers (#5) 34 ( 40 ) Cat Scratch Fever - Ted Nugent 35 ( 25 ) Star Wars (Main Theme) - John Williams & London Symphony Orchestra (#21) 36 ( 26 ) American Girl - Tommy Petty & The Heartbreakers (#22) 37 ( -- ) You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone 38 ( 23 ) You Got What It Takes - Showaddywaddy (#3) 39 ( -- ) Just Remember I Love You - Firefall 40 ( 31 ) Down The Hall - Four Seasons (#29)

No artists on this chart are in the current Haven Factor, in fact only Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton John and occasionally Dolly Parton are having hits around this time. One day Elvis Presley will appear, and given the strange nature of the contest we might even see The Boomtown Rats, Leo Sayer, Yes, David Essex or Foreigner, and from those falling out this week, Thin Lizzy or Carole King. Generation X maybe combined with solo Billy Idol. Not sure about Commodores with Lionel Richie but after the massive hit "Easy" they're back to the funky stuff and fail to chart.

In my chart "You Light Up My Life" debuted at # 1 on Christmas week, so you obviously used US release date.
Ronnie McDowell's tribute to Elvis is unknown for me. Sadly nobody didn't take a king of Rock'n'Roll in HF 9.

Sadly nobody didn't take a king of Rock'n'Roll in HF 9. Yes the UK were blessed with not having to be exposed to that tribute, whilst the US were spared Danny Mirror, who was one of the songwriters of the Dutch Eurovision winner for Teach-In and the other songwriters also wrote this song with him.
Even back in 1977 at the age of 12 I found "I Remember Elvis Presley" extremely corny.

31 ( 28 ) Daytime Friends - Kenny Rogers (#28) 32 ( 26 ) Jungle Love - Steve Miller Band (#26) 33 ( 37 ) You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone 34 ( -- ) Help Is On The Way - Little River Band 35 ( 32 ) I Believe You - Dorothy Moore (#32) 36 ( 39 ) Just Remember I Love You - Firefall 37 ( 18 ) Nobody Does It Better - Carly Simon (#2[2]) 38 ( -- ) I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You - Alan Parsons Project 39 ( 34 ) Cat Scratch Fever - Ted Nugent (#34) 40 ( -- ) Home Is Where The Heart Is - Gladys Knight & The Pips

The highest new entry this week is by the Stranglers with their most definitive work in my opinion prior to the complete change of sound with "Golden Brown".
Donna Summer continues to churn out hits in quick succession, as "Down Deep Inside" falls from #6 to #10 she's got a new one enter just below it, one which wasn't a big success in the UK but shows a completely different side to her, as this sounds like something out of the 1930s, but was actually written by her usual team of Moroder, Belotte and herself. She never sings the actual title, although she does remember a lot of other things (although Elvis Presley is also not on the list), and Giorgio Moroder also has a song enter under his first name.
Crystal Gayle, who is the sister of Loretta Lynn, enters with a song that would eventually climb to #2 in the USA and #5 in the UK at the start of 1978 (with quite a slow UK chart run). She's famous in the UK for this hit and "Talking In Your Sleep" which was later covered by Martine McCutcheon, but with which she will also have a hit in 1978.

The Stranglers get to #1, with The Jam having a song on my latest playlist. There are no T Rex / Marc Bolan songs charting after his untimely death 3 weeks ago. Gees fly in at #3.
It's about a decade since the Bee Gees first topped the UK chart but they haven't yet had a #1 on this chart, just a few #3 hits, and they enter at #3 this week.
This particular song was later covered by Take That. Quite a few cover versions enter this week, and actually the Carpenters song is one of them, and popped up on "cover idol". One of those "I didn't know that was a cover.." kind of hits. They have had 3 number ones but I think this will be their last ever hit.
Rockin' All Over The World reached #7 for John Fogerty, charting exactly 2 years ago. Further down we have Ariana by Stardust - that's not the same group that did "Music Sounds Better With You" but they're also French and this is an instrumental. The Peter Blake song was better know for advertising a fizzy drink that isn't Coca Cola.
"Blue Bayou" reached #4 for Roy Orbison in 1963. Linda Ronstadt's version has a base line that was later copied by Billy Joel in "An Innocent Man".
