So far so good for Newcastle in their pre-season friendlies. 3 games, 2 wins and a draw. 3-2 away to Gateshead (admittedly with what seems to be the reserve team), a 2-1 away win at Rangers with almost the full first team and then a draw 3-3 against Aston Villa in Philidelphia in the US. I'm not a fan of teams flying over to the US or the Far East for games with other Premier League teams but these days it's exppected to help grown the international fan base.
Next up we play Chelsea in another of the Premier League Summer Series matches then Brighton later in the week.

Al-Hilal have bid £259m to buy Kylian Mbappe.
Can we get the Saudi government to sponsor the NHS instead ? Would surely do far more to make people overlook the country's appalling human rights record than signing a load of footballers.

A second former Nottm Forest player died yesterday. A few hours after the death of Trevor Francis was announced, the death of Chris Bart-Williams who played for the club between 1995 and 2000 was confirmed. He also played for Sheffield Wednesday from 1991 to 1995. When he was at Sheffield Wednesday, Trevor Francis was manager of the team. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66297415

Shaka Hislop, former goalkeeper at Reading, Newcastle, West Ham (twice) and Portsmouth collapsed while conducting a pre-match pitchside interview for ESPN at a friendly between Real Madrid and AC Milan in California. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery from whatever medical condition he has. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66298535

I'm sure Newcastle lost to Carlisle 0-2, but maybe that was the youth team Stags were flying win 8-0, 4-0 & 4-0, all be it against Retford, Alfreton and Airdrieonians youth team, and have now lost to Rotherham 2-4, which isn't bad in my book as they're a championship side, and you learn more from your defeats (hopefully) Next up would have been Barnsley but they've been cancelling friendlies all over the place, and seem to be in a bit of bother over ownership and points deductions? With Wrexham, County, Gillingham, MK Dons, Stockport, Salford, Bradford, Tranmere, and even Accrington and Morecambe in league 2 who all do well at this level, then I cant see the Stags going up this season again But I live in hope...

I'm sure Newcastle lost to Carlisle 0-2, but maybe that was the youth team It was the U21s. Newcastle's academy hasn't exactly been known for producing superstars in the last couple of decades.

Marske have played 4 friendlies so far, drawn 2 lost 2. Lost 3-2 to Darlington on Saturday. Wasn't at the game but it was apparently our best performance so far. Blyth Spartans tonight.

Should be an interesting game to Blyth Spartans tonight. Blyth seem to be struggling a bit at the moment and have won only 1 of their 4 friendlies so far this season.
I'm hoping to get to see my local side, Washington AFC, at some point this coming season. Although I'm still sad to see the football ground (which as I've mentioned before was located at the end of my estate and less than a 5 minute walk away) is now long gone and a housing development is now being built there, after being something of a nomadic team for the past few years (we've played at North Shields, Nissan and even at one stage in Durham) we now have our own ground on the edge of town with decent enough facilities. However there's no club house selling cheap beer and pub type grub as there was at the old ground (most of the facilities are aimed towards the community as a whole including children so the bar has gone and in its place is a cafe that sells little more than pop and crisps.

Southampton go top of the league.
I'm writing this now, because I won't get another chance until they get relegated into League One.

Charlton started with a win, 1-0 at home against newly promoted Leyton Orient.
In League 2, both Wrexham and Notts County got hit for 5 goals.
Biggest disappointment of the weekend: Middlesbrough beaten by the scum.

West Brom off to their usual start then when they could have easily beaten their opponents.

Hoping for a draw between Man C and Newcastle to leave Brighton two points clear tonight!

Today would have been my dad's 89th birthday. I had a drink in his memory today and watched the highlights of the game we went to on his 65th birthday, 24 years ago today, 25 August 1999 - Newcastle 1 Sunderland 2! My dad drew his pension that day and us Newcastle fans thought we'd drawn the short straw! It was the day that Ruud Gullit left both Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson on the bench and the match, which was played in an incessant downpour from start to finish and which saw the playing surface reduced to a virtual and farcical swimming pool by the end of the match, saw our manager resign after the game and Bobby Robson take over. Bittersweet memories and it's never stopped raining today either!

What a miserable outcome! I had a bet on Newcastle to beat Liverpool 3-0, I got the three goals correct, but unfortunately it ended up Newcastle 1 Liverpool 2. That's a tenner down the pan...

Yeah I watched the game with Sam at his place, Liverpool were very clinical with their finishing!

A good result for Mansfield in the EFL Cup for Andy. 1-0 down against Sheffield Wednesday, Mansfield equalised with an excellent goal. It went to penalties and Mansfield won 5-4 on penalties!

Yes, I was amazed at that result as our team is down to the bare bones, and we never win penalty shootouts (apart from in 1987 at Wembley!) Looked a great goal by Oatesy, I just hope we get a good draw tonight, but I feel it will be Sutton away

Oooh we did draw with you in the league cup in 1992, but were 2-1 down from the home leg, then there was the Shearer goal in the FA Cup in 2006. Be quite nice to get Man U as we have never ever played them as far as I know? Maybe Leicester at home for a localish sell out game? I know I'm going to be disappointed
