Oh, so they were thinking they were just checking a goal that had been given? Are they not watching the game!

Exactly - they have a feed from the game, but sound apart from what seems to be a group audio chat between ref, linos, 4th official and VAR (so that they aren't influenced by crowd noise or commentators). I don't know if this is always-on or push-to-talk.
The core problem is that the same words ("check complete") is used for opposite outcomes, i.e. "yes, the goal is valid" or "yes, the offside was correct", so mistakes are not corrected.
Contrast this to DRS in cricket, where they clearly state something like "the on-field decision is out" and go from there.
To fix this, they should bring in a clear dialogue, which for Diaz's goal, should have gone like this: Ref: "Goal disallowed - offside" VAR: "Checking offside, the original decision was no goal" (VAR checks, draws lines, etc) VAR: "We found no offside. Goal should stand" Ref: "OK, giving the goal" *draws square* *peeep* VAR: *displays video message confirming decision*
Notice that both before and after, Ref and VAR both communicate unambiguously.
Contrast to what presumably happened: Ref: "VAR, please check" VAR (half-asleep after trip to the middle east right before the match): "huh, wha? oh, a goal... yep, looks fine. Check complete" Ref: "Restarting with free kick" (free kick taken) VAR: "oh ****"

Think this is now the 4th or 5th season since VAR was introduced in the Premier League now and it's stupid how there are basic mistakes being made with no improvements being made other than to further complicate the rules.
However I do feel the VAR ref has somewhat been made a scapegoat for what was a terrible decision on-field too. Yes he should get most of the blame but where's the linesman grilling in all of this?
FIFA had the right idea in the women's world cup - announcing the VAR reasoning of a decision to the audience. Wonder what happened with that? Agree with frag too the messaging needs to be clearer rather that just a "check complete" message.
Cricket had it's own issues with the review system too early on but these were slowly ironed out.

They decided they couldn't break the protocol of once the game restarted with the free kick, that they couldn't go back and say stop, it was actually onside and a goal, which would have been a cockup, but not half as big as this has turned out to be! The 4th official was suggesting they stop the game after it restarted, and the VAR people said they couldn't because of protocol! And yes totally agree that the ref needs to tell them what they are checking for, and confirm it at the end, problem is he's usually got players buzzing round him with "advice" and the fan noise! Let's just hope they learn from it!

The 2030 World Cup will be staged in... Spain! And Portugal! And Morocco! And Argentina! And Uruguay! And Paraguay! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67010609The 2030 World Cup will be held across six countries in three continents, Fifa has confirmed. Spain, Portugal and Morocco have been named as the co-hosts, with the opening three matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay. The opening matches in South America are to mark the World Cup's centenary as it will be 100 years since the inaugural tournament in Montevideo. The decision is set to be ratified at a Fifa congress next year. "In a divided world, Fifa and football are uniting," said Fifa president Gianni Infantino. "The Fifa Council, representing the entire world of football, unanimously agreed to celebrate the centenary of the Fifa World Cup, whose first edition was played in Uruguay in 1930, in the most appropriate way. "In 2030, we will have a unique global footprint, three continents - Africa, Europe and South America - six countries - Argentina, Morocco, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay - welcoming and uniting the world while celebrating together the beautiful game, the centenary and the Fifa World Cup." Fifa also confirmed only bids from countries from the Asian Football Confederation and the Oceania Football Confederation will be considered for the 2034 finals. Saudi Arabia is expected to bid to host the tournament in 2034 for the first time. Montevideo in Uruguay, the city which hosted the first World Cup match in 1930, is poised to stage the opening game in 2030 with matches in Argentina and Paraguay to follow. The rest of the 48-team tournament will then move to north Africa and Europe. If the 2030 proposal is approved, Morocco would become only the second African nation to host a World Cup, after South Africa in 2010. Spain has been named as joint-host weeks after former football federation chief Luis Rubiales resigned following criticism for kissing Jenni Hermoso at the Women's World Cup. Appearing in court, Rubiales was given a restraining order by a Spanish judge, but denied sexually assaulting Hermoso. Spain last hosted the World Cup in 1982, with Italy winning the tournament for the third time. Portugal has never hosted the tournament, but Euro 2004 was held there. As in previous World Cups, Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco will all qualify automatically as joint-hosts.

FUFA clearly didn't want the 2022 tournament to be the one with the largest carbon footprint for too long.

Meanwhile, it's looking almost certain that Euro 2028 will be held in the UK and Ireland after the only other bid, from Turkey, was withdrawn. Turkey is instead focusing on a joint bid with Italy for the 2032 tournament. Proposed venues: Wembley Stadium, London (capacity 90,652) Principality Stadium, Cardiff (73,952) Hampden Park, Glasgow (65,000) * Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, London (62,322) Etihad Stadium, Manchester (61,958) ** Everton Stadium, Liverpool (52,679) *** St. James' Park, Newcastle (52,305) Villa Park, Birmingham (52,190) ** Aviva Stadium, Dublin (51,711) Casement Park, Belfast (34,500) * * - after reconstruction ** - after expansion *** - not yet built

I'm still waiting for FIFA to realize that England already has the set up needed for a World Cup without building new stadiums or travelling thousands of miles to get to them. I mean if you reverted back to a 32 Team World Cup you could hold it in Greater London alone with the amount of decent stadiums there. PS. You don't need to guess my opinion over the VAR nonsense from Saturday night. So I'll just post this up:

6 hosts who all automatically qualify, madness! Yes, plus having to fly six teams to the Southern Hemisphere just for one match, then expecting them to play in Spain or something a few days later!

I'm still waiting for FIFA to realize that England already has the set up needed for a World Cup without building new stadiums or travelling thousands of miles to get to them. After the 2018 debacle, the FA pretty much ruled out bidding for any more FIFA tournaments while Sepp Blatter was in charge. Their stance doesn't seem to have changed since Infantino took over and given they have a much better relationship with UEFA, seem happy enough hostings Euros and Champions League finals. With 2030 being in Europe, that would seemingly rule out England hosting the men's World Cup until 2042 at the earliest. However, I wouldn't rule out England possibly bidding for the Women's World Cup in 2031, as long as the next edition isn't in Europe.

Utter madness at Birmingham City! John Eustace takes them to 6th in the table, the highest they've been in ages, and the American owners sack him, because they want Rooney as manager! A manager that had a win rate of 28% at Derby and 26% at DC United. Will players that were playing for Eustace and signed by him keep playing for Rooney? I hope Eustace got a good payoff and gets another job soon.

When I started following Brighton & Hove Albion they were a third tier club in a sh*t stadium with aspirations of playing in the second tier for the odd season or two. Ajax were one of the biggest names in European football,
Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 Ajax

Ajax were one of the biggest names in European football, Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 Ajax I was going through my ticket stubs and I went to Darlington v Brighton in back to back seasons in 98/99 when they were both in the 4th tier, Darlington are now getting relegated to the 7th tier whilst Brighton beat Ajax

Sackings are coming thick and fast, these are some of the recent ones I can remember, which I dont think have appointed anyone yet. Bradford, Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Lincoln, Grimsby, Gillingham, Colchester, QPR, Millwall. Although I think Gillingham have gone for former Spurs player Clemence as their new boss, bit of a gamble! And not sure if Tranmere dont still have an interim boss? And Southampton have appointed Colin Calderwood as manager?

Nigel Adkins is still interim Tranmere manager.
QPR have appointed Marti Cifuentes, who was previously at Swedish club Hammarby.

And Southampton have appointed Colin Calderwood as manager? You panicked me there. He's been appointed first team coach. The manager remains Russell Martin.
