Newport County away.
Recall that last season we reached the quarter final, were the last London team left in the contest and lost 3-0 away to Manchester United but two of those goals were right at the end. We knocked out Brighton on the way, who finished 6th in the Premier League.

League Cup draw made. Southern SectionGillingham v Southampton Last season Southampton were the team that stopped Manchester City winning the quadruple, and reached the semi-final. Now the very real chance of not making the second round. #woeful mis-management# #sack the board#

I'm hoping the Cardiff and Swansea games are on different nights, so I can go watch both and tick two more grounds off

No comment on the first female boss being appointed at a senior men's team? Hannah Dingley appointed at Forest Green Rovers.

You could also throw in Dejan Lovren, Pierre-Emil Hojbjerg, Matt Targett and Morgan Schneidelin as players who made their Premier Division debuts with Southampton, and got sold on to a bigger club for a profit during the past 10 years. The really stupid thing is that if you add up every Southampton transfer ever above £1 million, the club has received £490 million from sales, but spent £420 million. From these 7 players Southampton made a profit of almost £200m:- van Dyk (+£64m), Shaw (+£27m), Lallana (+£25m), Sane (+£24m), Schneiderlin (+£23m), Chambers (+£16m), Targett (+£16m). Which means the club has p*ssed a huge amount up the wall on total rubbish:- Guido Carillo (£19m), Soufiane Boufal (£18m), Pablo Daniel Osvaldo (£15m), Wesley Hoedt (£15m), Angus Gunn (£14m), Gaston Ramirez (£11m), Florin Gardos (£10m). If you remember any of these players setting the Premier Division alight, then you'd shock every Southampton supporter. Every one of those players, except Gunn, left on a free transfer within 3 years, and in some cases, within a year.

Over in the States, the CONCACAF Gold Cup is currently taking place. A few surprise results in the group stage mean CONCACAF's best 4 teams are facing each other in the quarter-finals.
Guatemala v Jamaica Mexico v Costa Rica USA v Canada Panama v Qatar
Qatar are playing as a guest team and qualified for the knockout stages ahead of Honduras after beating Mexico 1-0 in their final group game with their only shot of the match.

England win the Euro U21s against Spain 1-0, with an injury time double penalty save to keep it at 1-0, brilliant!

Has James Trafford (the goalkeeper) stopped smiling yet? He smiled his way through the rest of the match and, obviously, the celebrations afterwards.

Saw an amazing stat the other day relating to England's previous Euro U21 final appearance in 2009, when they lost 4-0 to Germany. 6 members of that German squad went on to win the World Cup in 2014. 7 members of the England squad went on to play for Sunderland.

England last won the European U-21 championship in 1984.
The final was played over two legs, and England beat Spain 1-0 in Seville and 2-0 at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.
The England players across those two matches, with their clubs at the time, and the total number of full caps they would go on to earn were:-
Gary Bailey (Man Utd) 2 Peter Hucker (QPR) 0
Mel Sterland (Sheff Wed) 1 Danny Thomas (Tottenham) 2 Nick Pickering (Sunderland) 1 Gary Stevens (Tottenham) 7 Paul Bracewell (Stoke) 3 Derek Mountfield (Everton) 0 Dave Watson (Norwich) 12
Nigel Callaghan (Watford) 0 Steve Hodge (Nottm For) 24 Kevin Brock (Oxford) 0
Howard Gayle (Birmingham) 0 Mark Hateley (Portsmouth) 32 Mich D'Avray (Ipswich) 0 Danny Wallace (Southampton) 1
So, just two of the team went on to play more than a dozen times for England.
- Liverpool won the League that season, and supplied nobody to the squad. - Kevin Brock was playing for Oxford Utd at the time, who had just won the Third Division. This didn't stop Dave Sexton from giving him all 180 minutes of the final. - Portsmouth finished 16th in Division Two. Their main striker, Mark Hateley, was voted the best player of the tournament by the European press, and was the championship's top scorer.

No comment on the first female boss being appointed at a senior men's team? Hannah Dingley appointed at Forest Green Rovers. Saw that, Forest Green blazing a trail again. I don't have a League Two team to follow at the moment, so might have to start paying attention to them, especially if they keep her full time rather than just as a caretaker manager.

Is this a serious appointment with a reasonable likelihood of becoming permanent, or is it a publicity stunt ? I sincerely hope the former, and FGR do have strong credentials ref. modern thinking, so fingers crossed.

Bayern Munich won 27-0 at a team called FC Rottach-Egern (rotten feet) in a friendly, which is an improvement on the 23-0 they inflicted on the same team a few years ago! While it's great to see giants like this playing smaller teams (boosting their attendance and income), I'm not sure how much fitness it gives their own players And I guess for FC Rottach-Egern, things can only get better!
