I'm thinking of adding Matt Monro though. There's also James Last, who sold loads of albums as a band leader. Marc Almond should also be added. (Not sure how John Squire got on the list though, he wasn't on mine. He's done nothing significant as a soloist. Similar reason why Bob Geldof isn't there). Frankie Vaughan too? And how about Acker Bilk? Quite a bit more to his career than just Stranger On The Shore.
Some might wish to nominate Notorious BIG (I put Tupac in) or 50 Cent (oh my!).
As for Andy's comment, the only fair way to reduce the list is through formal voting.
If we have 160, we put 96 of them into a preliminary stage with 32 groups of 3, and 2 go through from each group of 3, thus removing 32.
With 192 we can do a full "group" stage to eliminate a third of them, so we can keep this list open for 1 week or until we get to 192, whichever comes first.

Can I also add a little unknown American singer/songwriter called: Bob Dylan to the list? ;D look at my list on this page and not the one on the front page.

Art Garfunkel... I wanna hold back doing this til the women's knockout has progressed NM, or even finished, so that we are just doing one set of votes at a time...

Ok.
I think at this point we'll make a rule that to be added to this list, an artist must be seconded by another poster.
If, as we reach the closing date, we are short of the 192, we will then consider some who have been nominated but not seconded to take up the empty spaces.
The women's knock out is a week a round is it? So it will take 6 weeks to complete? But by 2 weeks it will be down to a final 16, which is rather more manageable than it is now. Or by 3 weeks when it will be a final 8.
I think the group stage should be unseeded, but then we will seed the 8 that get through with the most number of points.

look at my list which is on page 3. That is the list as it stands. Many of your choices are already on the list.
To get others on the list they will need to be seconded by another poster. Some of those on your list are pretty much one-hit wonders. Aswad is a group.

I will also nominate Frank Ifield - he did, after all, have 4 number ones in the early 60s. Anyone care to second it?
Leo Sayer. How did we miss him out? (Someone second him please!)
I will nominate Wilson Pickett, who has "legendary" status as a soul/blues giant.

You could remove the rappers if you wanted to cut down. Keep Wyclef though because he sings in songs like 911 and Gone Til November.

It's a list of significant artists, not ones I personally like. Rap is a significant music form and deserves to be represented.
Bobby Vee should be nominated. Major star of the early 60s, hits including "Rubber Ball", "More Than I Can Say" (covered by Leo Sayer and in my opinion ripped off by the Police in "Every Breath You Take" and therefore subsequently by Puff Daddy), "Take Good Care Of My Baby" and "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes".

Will you second any (or all) of my selections please. Especially Leo Sayer who surely has to be on here and would have been had I thought of him earlier.
My 5 nominees are:
Leo Sayer Frank Ifield Frankie Vaughan Bobby Vee Wilson Pickett
of krescendo's list, many of them are already on the list. I might be willing to second Ricky Martin, Darren Hayes and will also consider Gary Barlow.

MARK KNOPFLER!
he was much better with dire straits, admittedly... but the "golden heart" solo effort had some moments...

There are quite a few on our list who were best known with groups but also had solo careers.
When it comes to the voting stage, I guess it will be up to the discretion of the voters whether they consider the artist's major involvement with their group or only their solo efforts when casting their vote.

Yes! And why exactly isn't Clint Boon on that list? ok, Mark Knopfler is seconded and has been added. Clint Boon has never released anything as a soloist. The Clint Boon Experience was a group (as were Inspiral Carpets). Ok, so Jimi Hendrix also recorded as the Jimi Hendrix Experience... but I think there's a major difference even here. Of course, but for the snobs, Clint Boon might have been in here.
