........Will be appearing here shortly.
OK so you can probably guess who's going to be #1 but I still thought it would be fun to do and I'll try to make it as interesting as possible.
Any female singer can be included, whether she be a soloist or vocalist of a band (or both in some cases). I've decided to lump girl-bands, or mainly girl-bands where there is more than one main singer, into 1 entry, as it could get silly if we have a separate entry for each member of Bananarama. Where a member of a girl-band has had solo success, then she could enter on her own and as part of a band. So it is possible (but highly unlikely) that all 5 spice girls could enter separately as well as as part of the band.
Anyway, I'll be back later to start this.

Thanks andy. At the moment I've got a list of about 200 females, of which I've got to eliminate half before I can start! Looks like Michelle McManus won't be making it onto the chart!!

100 - DEBBIE GIBSON Essential Listening: "Electric Youth" (1989)Debbie arrived in the late 80's and was rival to Tiffany, who was the other teen American hitmaker of the same period. Debbie wrote her own music and her first album was called 'Out of the blue' and was a massive success. This she followed up with the brilliant 'Electric Youth' and the world seemed to be her oyster. However, apart from a part in the original musical of 'Grease', she's had very little success since. That could be about to change, however, with the release of her fabulous new single 'Naked'. TOP 5 TUNES1. Electric Youth 2. Only in my dreams 3. Shake your love 4. Lost in your eyes 5. Foolish beat

ooh I've just listened to 'Foolish beat' for the first time in ages and I think I placed it a bit low at #5. What a gorgeous song, Delta would die for a song like this!

99 - HONEYZ Essential Listening: "Wonder No.8" (1998)As soon as they burst onto the scene in late 1998 I could tell that they were going to take off where Eternal left. From the fantastic debut album they released gorgoeus ballad after gorgeous ballad. Then I waited eagerly for the follow-up, but it never came! A couple of singles appeared but they lacked the magic of their debut, and so badly underperformed and the second album was shelved. Sadly I doubt they'll ever be back, but they remain one of my favourite girl-bands of the nineties and I don't care what anybody says! TOP 5 TUNES1. Finally Found 2. Won't take it lying down 3. End of the line 4. Never let you down 5. Love of a lifetime

98 - TRACY CHAPMAN Essential Listening: "Tracy Chapman" (1988)Probably one of the best-selling debuts ever. Tracy burst onto the scene after her performance in the Nelson Mandela birthday concert in 1988, with the outstanding single 'First car' and an outstanding album to match. I have to confess that this is the only Tracy album I own - I've never even got round to purchasing the Greatest Hits! The debut, however, remains as powerful and thought-provoking today as it did back in '88. TOP 5 TUNES1. Fast Car 2. Baby can I hold you 3. Behind the wall 4. Talkin' Bout a revolution 5. Mountains O' Things

97. JONI MITCHELL Essential Listening: "Hits" (1996)OK I know I'll get shot here for placing her too low down, but the fact is I only own the Greatest Hits and have yet to explore her further. I know I will one day and she'll probably shoot up my list, but for now she remains at a lowly #97. TOP 5 TUNES1. Big Yellow Taxi 2. Come In From the Cold 3. The Circle Game 4. Both Sides, Now 5. Woodstock

96. LIZA MINNELLI Essential Listening: "Results" (1989)Sadly Liza's mum, Judy Garland, didn't make it into the top 100, but Liza's here - mainly due to the fantastic Pet Shop Boys produced album 'Results', easily one of the best albums ever! Liza has been having hit albums since 1973, but she had to wait 16 years for her first hit single - the amazing 'Losing My Mind', which is an absolute classic! The Greatest Hits is well worth a listen too. TOP 5 TUNES1. Losing my mind 2. So sorry, I said 3. I want you now 4. Maybe this time 5. Don't drop bombs

95. DOLORES O'RIORDAN Essential Listening: "The Cranberries - Stars: The Best of 1992-2002" (2002)Dolores is the lead singer of the Cranberries, and what a powerful Irish voice she has. 'Dreams' (not the Fleetwood Mac track) is nothing less than stunning. Definitely one of the more underrated bands of the last decade. TOP 5 TUNES1. Dreams 2. Linger 3. Ode to my family 4. Salvation 5. Free to Decide

94. ROZALLA Essential Listening: "Everybody's free (1992)This isn't the cover I've got on my album but It's the only one I could find! Anyway, Rozalla was the queen of rave back in 1991/92 and is probably the only artist from Zimbabwe on the list. Her second album 'Look no further' moved away from the rave scene slightly but was still full of dance classics, plus a version of the R.E.M. classic 'Losing my religion', which I'm sure was slated at the time (probably the reason why it didn't get a single release!). Anyway, I'm still awaiting her comeback which has never really come. TOP 5 TUNES1. Are you ready to fly 2. Faith (in the power of love) 3. Everybody's free (to feel good) 4. This time I found love 5. You never love the same way twice

93. KIKI DEE Essential Listening: "Amoureuse" (1996)Probably best known for duetting with Elton John on the 1976 smash 'Don't go breaking my heart', which was her only #1 single. Her first hit, however, was in 1973 with the simply stunning 'Amoureuse' - one of the most gorgeous songs ever! TOP 5 TUNES1. Amoureuse 2. Don't go breaking my heart 3. Loving and free 4. True love 5. I got the music in me

92. CERYS MATTHEWS "Essential Listening: Catatonia - International Velvet" (1998)Surely one of the most distinquished voices around, Cerys was originally the lead singer of one of the best bands of the late 90's. After the phenonimal success of 'International Velvet' they followed it up with 'Equally cursed and blessed' and then they seemed to go downhill from there. At the moment she's trying to establish herself as a solo artist, with not much success. TOP 5 TUNES1. Mulder and Scully 2. Road Rage 3. Strange Glue 4. The ballad of Tom Jones 5. Dead from the waist down

91. WILSON PHILLIPS Essential Listening: "Wilson Phillips" (1990)These 3 ladies burst onto the scene in 1990 with their debut album and worldwide success was imminent. They only really had one big hit single in the U.K., the classic 'Hold on', but for a while it looked like they were here to stay. Unfortunately that wasn't the case and they disappeared after their poorly received second album. I did hear that they've recently released a new album, but I've yet to hear any material from it. TOP 5 TUNES1. Hold on 2. Release me 3. You're in love 4. Impulsive 5. The dream is still alive

90. TORI AMOS Essential Listening: "Little Earthquakes" (1992)This is probably far too low for a lot of people, but I must admit I'm only a casual listener of Ms. Amos. That's not to say I don't enjoy her music, because I do, it's just that I only own 'Little Earthquakes' and 'Tales of a librarian'. She has got a stunning voice though, and I feel that I really ought to explore her music further. TOP 5 TUNES1. Cornflake girl 2. Crucify 3. Professional widow (It's got to be big) 4. Silent all these years 5. Winter
