24. CAROL DECKER Essential Listening: "T'pau - Bridge of spies" (1987)You've probably already gathered that I was an 80's kid, and 'Bridge of spies' was one of the very best albums of that era - it's an absolute masterpiece! I know they get ridiculed now and I really can't understand why as Carol Decker was the voice of the late 80's for me. TOP 5 TUNES1. China in your hand 2. Heart and soul 3. Valentine 4. I will be with you 5. Bridge of spies

23. TAYLOR DAYNE Essential Listening: "Can't fight fate" (1990)Before Anastacia we had Taylor Dayne, and their voices are remarkably similar. Taylor's best loved song is 'tell it to my heart', which still gets people up dancing today, but 'I'll be your shelter' amongst others are just as good and deserve far more recognition than they get. TOP 5 TUNES1. Tell it to my heart 2. I'll be your shelter 3. I'll always love you 4. Love will lead you back 5. Prove your love

22. CYNDI LAUPER Essential Listening: "A night to remember" (1989)Cyndi's unique voice and style made her one of the best pop singers of the eighties. In fact I think she was queen of pop until Madonna came along and whipped the crown off her head before it had chance to get settled. The songs listed below are true classics in every sense of the word. TOP 5 TUNES1. I drove all night 2. True colors 3. Girls just want to have fun 4. Time after time 5. Who let in the rain

21. TINA TURNER Essential Listening: "Private dancer" (1984)If Madonna is the queen of pop, then Tina Turner is the queen mother! 'Private dancer' remains an absolute classic album with not a bad track in sight. 1989's 'Foreign affair' album isn't far behind either! TOP 5 TUNES1. River deep mountain high 2. We don't need another hero 3. What's love got to do with it 4. 1984 5. The best

20. DINA CARROLL Essential Listening: "So close" (1992)After the huge success of the 'So close' album it was assumed that Dina was to be the next Whitney. The trouble is it took her 3 years to follow up, and then she came back with the fabulous 'Escaping' and another great album. If she'd ever released a third album, and carried on, then I'm sure she'd be mentioned in the same breath as Whitney and Janet Jackson. Where are you Dina?? You've got real talent and it's being wasted! TOP 5 TUNES1. The perfect year 2. It's too late 3. Escaping 4. Don't be a stranger 5. Ain't no man

19. GLORIA ESTEFAN Essential Listening: "Gloria" (1998)Gloria Estefan first hit the charts way back in 1984 with the Miami Sound Machine. Then she went solo and was hugely successful for a while. Unfortunately she met the same fate as most of the other great female artists of the eighties, and her recent albums have flopped. 2003's 'Unwrapped' may have only made #76 on the charts but it's still a great album, although her best effort was 1998's 'Gloria' which was pure disco heaven! TOP 5 TUNES1. Dr. Beat 2. Can't stay away from you 3. Turn the beat around 4. Heaven's what I feel 5. 1,2,3

18. ALISON MOYET Essential Listening: "Singles" (1995)I had to pick 'singles' as it's one of the best greatest hits albums of all-time, despite not including her best song with Yazoo - 'Don't go'! Alison has always had a great voice, and this is showcased on her latest album 'Voice'. TOP 5 TUNES1. Don't go 2. That ole devil called love 3. All cried out 4. Nobody's diary 5. Weak in the presence of beauty

17. BETTE MIDLER Essential Listening: "Beaches OST." (1989)That year keeps cropping up! Bette's version of 'Wind beneath my wings' is my favourite song in the world...ever! I think it's absolutely divine and I get goosebumps every time I hear it. There's no other song that has quite the same effect on me, and it doesn't work when anybody else sings it - it's got to be Bette! I don't just love her for that song either, her voice sounds great on whatever song she decides to sing and she makes each one her own. TOP 5 TUNES1. Wind beneath my wings 2. From a distance 3. The rose 4. Chapel of love 5. As dreams go by

16. KATE BUSH Essential Listening: "Hounds of love" (1985)'Wuthering heights' is without a doubt in my top 5 all-time favourite songs, it is an absolute classic which nobody else should ever touch (Ok I know people have but they shouldn't have!). This year supposedly sees the release of her first album in 12 years and I for one can't wait! I hope it's another masterpiece like 'Hounds of love' and not another 'Sensual world' which, apart from 'This woman's work' and a couple of others, I could never really get into. Incidentally I am quite liking the Futureheads version of 'Hounds of love', although not on the same level that I love Kate's of course! TOP 5 TUNES1. Wuthering heights 2. Running up that hill 3. Babooshka 4. Hounds of love 5. Experiment IV

15. CHER Essential Listening: "Heart of stone" (1989)I thought Cher would be in my top 10, but it's getting hard to eliminate them now! This lady has the rare honour of having a top ten hit in each of the last five decades! She has managed to re-invent herself time and time again, from the rock chick who performed 'If I could turn back time' to the dance diva who had a phenominal hit with 'Believe'. It's hard to know what she'll come back with next, but I just hope it's soon! Her last album, 'Living proof' did very poorly and was hugely underrated. TOP 5 TUNES1. If I could turn back time 2. Just like Jesse James 3. Believe 4. I got you babe 5. Dark lady

14. MARIAH CAREY Essential Listening: "Music box" (1993)It was between 'Music box' and 'Daydream', but the former won due to the fact that it's got the amazing 'Hero' on it. Mariah hasn't done as well in recent years but I think that could change with the release of her brilliant new single and sound, which she does 50 times better than Beyoncé any day! TOP 5 TUNES1. Hero 2. One sweet day 3. All I want for Christmas is you 4. Anytime you need a friend 5. Without you

13. CELINE DION Essential Listening: "Let's talk about love" (1997)First the Titanic song! One thing that bugs me more than anything is people who go on TV and radio just to slag this song off and then rave about pure SH*T like Eminem or something. 'My heart will go on' is one of the most emotional and heart-rendering songs ever written and Celine sings it with more passion than most of these 'cooler' artists wouldn't know if they fell over it! There I've had my rave, but I happen to think Celine has one of the best female voices ever and I'm sick of only hearing negative things about her! TOP 5 TUNES1. My heart will go on 2. It's all coming back to me now 3. Tell him 4. Think twice 5. Where does my heart beat now

12. MARIE FREDRIKKSON Essential Listening: "Roxette - Joyride" (1991)Probably the uncoolest band of the nineties, but also the best and most underrated. Every one of their songs was written by them, there's not a single cover version to be found on any of their albums. Their last album, 'Room service' was a real treasure and should have been massive. TOP 5 TUNES1. It must have been love 2. Spending my time 3. Listen to your heart 4. Fading like a flower 5. Crash! Boom! Bang!

11. DIANA ROSS / THE SUPREMES Essential Listening: "Love & Life: The very best of Diana Ross" (2001)I was going to chart the 2 separately, but then I decided that Diana was the voice of the Supremes anyway so I lumped them together so I could squeeze somebody else in! The Supremes were undoubtedly the best girl group of the sixties, if not all-time! Diana has released countless classics over the last 30 odd years and is well-deserved of her place! TOP 5 TUNES1. When you tell me that you love me 2. I'm still waiting 3. Chain reaction 4. You can't hurry love 5. Touch me in the morning

10. KAREN CARPENTER Essential Listening: "The Carpenters - Their greatest hits" (1990)I chose this collection (mine has a white cover but it was the only one I could find on the net!) over the more recent 'Gold' one, purely for the reason that it includes the wonderful 'All you get from love is a love song', otherwise the 'Gold' one is better as it includes 'I need to be in love' and 'Sing'. Anyway, everyone in the top ten deserves to be top 5 but they can't all be in there! Karen had the voice of an angel but with more than a hint of sadness in it, 'Superstar' is both genius and haunting at the same time. Their music may not be cool but it has stood the test of time more than most has. TOP 5 TUNES1. Superstar 2. I won't last a day without you 3. Top of the world 4. Yesterday once more 5. Only yesterday

9. DEBBIE HARRY Essential Listening: "Blondie - Parallel lines" (1978)If I ever do an all-time favourite albums list (and I keep meaning to!) then I can guarantee that 'Parallel lines will feature pretty highly. There isn't a bad track to be found on the album at all. In fact I don't recall Debbie ever having done a bad track at all. I think Blondie's 2 comeback singles of recent years: 'Maria' and 'Good boys' sit comfortably amongst their best work. TOP 5 TUNES1. Atomic 2. Picture this 3. Maria 4. One way or another 5. I want that man

8. AGNETHA FALTSKOG & ANNA-FRID LYNGSTAD Essential Listening: "Abba - Gold: Greatest Hits" (1992)Abba's 'Gold' album has to be the best collection of tracks ever to be put onto one album. There simply isn't a track on there which isn't total genius! The music lives on, from generation to generation and simply refuses to die, and I really don't think it ever will. It's loved by me, my mum, my gran, my 5 year old nephew - everybody! TOP 5 TUNES1. Mamma mia 2. The winner takes it all 3. Fernando 4. Waterloo 5. Chiquitita
