70. MARTIKA Essential Listening: "Martika" (1989)I was a massive fan of 'Toy soldiers' long before Eminem massacred it, but I won't go into that! Martika was probably the most promising new artist of 1989 with her great blend of pure pop and fabulous tunes. Then she followed it up with the Prince-produced 'Martika's kitchen' in 1991 and it looked like she was here to stay. Unfortunately that was the end of the story and a greatest hits album is all we've had to look forward to since. TOP 5 TUNES1. Toy soldiers 2. More than you know 3. I feel the earth move 4. Love...thy will be done 5. Cross my heart

69. SHARLEEN SPITERI Essential Listening: "Texas - White on blonde" (1997)Texas have been having hits since 1989, although it looked like they were finished until 1997's spectacular 'White on blonde' album which really turned things around for them. Sharleen Spiteri is the talented voice behind the band. I always assumed she was a lesbian for some reason, but apparantly she's not! TOP 5 TUNES1. I don't want a lover 2. Halo 3. Black eyed boy 4. Say what you want 5. Tired of being alone

68. MARY J. BLIGE Essential Listening: "No more drama" (2001)Mary is the undisbuted queen of modern r&b for me, and her 2001 hit 'Family affair' is one of the best dancefloor anthems ever! Her last album 'Love & Life' didn't do so well but give it a chance as it's a real grower! TOP 5 TUNES1. Family affair 2. Mary Jane (All night long) 3. Love is all we need 4. No more drama 5. Real love

67. CATHY DENNIS Essential Listening: "Move to this" (1991)Cathy started her career in 1989 as a backing singer for D.Mob, then she went solo and had some brilliant hits like 'Just another dream' and 'Touch me (all night long)'. In 1997 she released the outstanding cover version of the Kinks' 'Waterloo sunset' (which I have to confess I like as much as the original!). Then she decided to give up singing and took to writing pop classics for people such as S Club 7 & Kylie. TOP 5 TUNES1. Waterloo sunset 2. Touch me (all night long) 3. Just another dream 4. C'mon and get my love 5. Why

66. SUZANNE VEGA Essential Listening: "Tried and true-The best of Suzanne Vega" (1998)Ashamedly I only own the greatest hits, but it is a fantastic album and I've just decided that I'm going to buy her debut album if I can find it cheap anywhere. 'Luka' is a powerful song about the horrors of domestic violence and one of the best songs ever! TOP 5 TUNES1. Luka 2. Tom's diner (DNA remix) 3. Marlene on the wall 4. Left of center 5. When heroes go down

65. THE GO-GO'S Essential Listening: "Beauty and the beat" (1981)The Go-Go's consisted of Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine & Charlotte Caffey. Their music is rockier than Belinda's solo stuff, but I have to confess I only got into them because of her. They reformed a couple of years ago and released the brilliant album 'God bless the Go-Go's'. TOP 5 TUNES1. We got the beat 2. Head over heels 3. Our lips are sealed 4. Lust to love 5. Vacation

64. BARBRA STREISAND Essential Listening: "Guilty" (1980)The Bee Gees written and produced 'Guilty' is one of the best albums of all-time IMO. I didn't intend placing Barbra this low down, but I've got so many favourites that it's getting really hard now! TOP 5 TUNES1. Woman in love 2. Tell him 3. No more tears (enough is enough) 4. What kind of fool 5. You don't bring me flowers

63. PAULA ABDUL Essential Listening: "Forever your girl" (1989)Now on the panel of American Idol, Paula was once one of the hottest female pop stars around. She had no less than 6 hits off her debut album 'Forever your girl', which she followed up with the equally fabulous 'Spellbound'. Her third album was very poorly received and she disappeared after that. The debut remains a piece of pop heaven though. TOP 5 TUNES1. Opposites attract 2. Straight up 3. Forever your girl 4. Rush Rush 5. Knocked out

62. MARTINE McCUTCHEON Essential Listening: "You, Me & Us" (1999)She's had a lot of stick over the years from the press (whose favourite hobby is building stars up, and then knocking them back down as soon as they get to the top!), but I LOVE her. I loved her in Eastenders, I cried when she got killed off, I loved her as a singer and I loved her in My Fair Lady. The debut album was magnificent with gorgeous ballad after gorgoeus ballad. Then she went all pop for the second album and released the fabulous 'I'm over you' as the lead single. However, a couple of tracks aside, the album wasn't up to much and did rather badly. Her brilliant album of songs from musicals, 'Musicality' was released in time for Christmas 2002. Unfortunately it didn't fill too many Christmas stockings and bombed spectacularly. TOP 5 TUNES1. Perfect moment 2. Love me 3. I've got you 4. maybe this time 5. I'm over you

61. ANN & NANCY WILSON Essential Listening: "Heart - Heart" (1985)Sisters Ann & Nancy Wilson are the lead singers of successful American rock band, Heart. They have been going since the 70's, but only became successful in the U.K. in the eighties. TOP 5 TUNES1. Alone 2. All I wanna do is make love to you 3. These dreams 4. What about love 5. Who will you run to

97. JONI MITCHELL Essential Listening: "Hits" (1996)OK I know I'll get shot here for placing her too low down, but the fact is I only own the Greatest Hits and have yet to explore her further. I know I will one day and she'll probably shoot up my list, but for now she remains at a lowly #97. TOP 5 TUNES1. Big Yellow Taxi 2. Come In From the Cold 3. The Circle Game 4. Both Sides, Now 5. Woodstock *shoots*

90. TORI AMOS Essential Listening: "Little Earthquakes" (1992)This is probably far too low for a lot of people, but I must admit I'm only a casual listener of Ms. Amos. That's not to say I don't enjoy her music, because I do, it's just that I only own 'Little Earthquakes' and 'Tales of a librarian'. She has got a stunning voice though, and I feel that I really ought to explore her music further. TOP 5 TUNES1. Cornflake girl 2. Crucify 3. Professional widow (It's got to be big) 4. Silent all these years 5. Winter She is my favourite artist ever! Close with David Bowie though. Way too low down.

;D yay comments! Thanks for your opinions guys, I'm pleased to receive any critisisms (have I spelt that right?). Joni and Tori are both on my list of artists to get to know better.
I knew I'd get stick for including Martine, but I just LOVE her - I don't know what it is!

60. FAITH HILL Essential Listening: "Love will always win" (1999)I first fell in love with Faith's voice when 'This kiss' charted in 1998. Then I heard 'Let me let go' on the radio and I just had to buy her album, and immediately fell in love with it. I think I'd class her as soft country/rock, which was evident on the next album 'Breathe' too. Her last album 'Cry' was an underlooked work of genius, and 'Beautiful' especially should have been a single! TOP 5 TUNES1. This kiss 2. The way you love me 3. There you'll be 4. Let me let go 5. There will come a day

59. DIONNE WARWICK Essential Listening: "The essential collection" (1996)As with Barbra Streisand, Dionne's biggest works of genius are Bee Gees compositions. 'Heartbreaker' and 'All the love in the world' brought her back to the top ten in 1982, for the first time in 14 years! Her other big classic is 'Walk on by', which has been recorded by countless singers but Dionne's version remains the definitive. TOP 5 TUNES1. All the love in the world 2. Heartbreaker 3. Walk on by 4. That's what friends are for 5. Do you know the way to San Jose

58. LINN & JENNY BERGGREN Essential Listening: "Ace of base - Happy nation (U.S. version)" (1993)Sisters Linn and Jenny were the main voices behind Swedish band Ace of Base, who had hit after hit during the nineties. Their perfect pop/dance sound was only matched by their brilliant feel-good tunes, and I'd class them as somewhere between Abba and Steps. Unfortunately the hits dried up, but I'm sure we'll have a revival soon! TOP 5 TUNES1. Almost have, almost will 2. The sign 3. Don't turn around 4. All that she wants 5. Beautiful life

57. KIM WILDE Essential Listening: "The singles collection 1981-1993" (1993)She may not have had the strongest voice in the world, but Kim could belt out a tune and the genius of her well-crafted pop songs certainly made her one of the biggest and best female artists of the eighties. It was after this singles collection release in 1993 that the hits dried up, and she is now happier gardening than singing! TOP 5 TUNES1. Kids in America 2. You came 3. The second time 4. Four letter word 5. Cambodia
