89. SINEAD O'CONNOR Essential Listening: "I do not want what I haven't got" (1990)Another great Irish vocalist, whose voice sounds so pure it's impossible not to feel emotion when listening to songs such as 'Nothing compares 2 U', which she sings better than Prince, who wrote the song. Unfortunately that song was her only top ten hit, and also undeservedly! TOP 5 TUNES1. Nothing compares 2 u 2. The emperor's new clothes 3. Mandinka 4. Thank you for hearing me 5. Fire on Babylon

88. WENDY JAMES Essential Listening: "Transvision Vamp - Velveteen" (1989)A blast from the 80's now, and one of the gutsiest voices of the day. Their second album 'Velveteen' was a massive success, but unfortunately they couldn't follow it up and their next release flopped badly. Really though they should have been huge! TOP 5 TUNES1. Baby I don't care 2. I want your love 3. Landslide of love 4. The only one 5. Revolution baby

87. ELKIE BROOKS Essential Listening: "The very best of Elkie Brooks" (1997)It's impossible not to recognise Elkie's husky voice when it comes on the radio. Elkie has been having hit albums since the seventies, but most of her hits have been cover versions. When she does something original it's great though, and 'No more the fool' remains a favourite of mine. TOP 5 TUNES1. No more the fool 2. Pearl's a singer 3. Sunshine after the rain 4. Don't cry out loud 5. Lilac wine

86. BRITNEY SPEARS Essential Listening: "Oops!...I did it again" (2000)This lady was very hard to place in my top 100 as I love her one minute and hate her the next. She has done some great tunes though, there's no denying! One things for sure, she's shut all those people up who said her career was finished a couple of years ago! TOP 5 TUNES1. Born to make you happy 2. Toxic 3. ...Baby one more time 4. Lucky 5. Sometimes

85. NENEH CHERRY Essential Listening: "Raw like sushi" (1989)1989 really was a fantastic year for music! Neneh's debut album was big news in this year, and her style of rap was very easy on the ear, and great with it! I don't know what happened after that - she seemed to lose the rap and go more soulful. A greatest hits album is long overdue, if you're reading this Neneh!! TOP 5 TUNES1. Buffalo stance 2. Manchild 3. Love can build a bridge 4. Kisses on the wind 5. 7 seconds

84. SISTER SLEDGE Essential Listening: "Very best of Sister Sledge 1973-93" (1993)Their greatest hits is packed full of fabulous disco classics (and Frankie!), which just keep coming back again and again - refusing to die! Apart from that though, I'm afraid I've heard very little else. Itunes beckons I think! TOP 5 TUNES1. Thinking of you 2. Lost in music 3. Mama never told me 4. All American girls 5. Frankie

83. MARCIA BARRETT, LIZ MITCHELL & MAISIE WILLIAMS Essential Listening: "Boney M - The Greatest Hits" (2001)As I'm typing this I can't help thinking that they should be higher, but I think I'll leave them where they are for now. Back in the seventies (before my day I might add!) they released disco classic after disco classic, which are still as popular today as they ever were. TOP 5 TUNES1. Rasputin 2. Ma Baker 3. Rivers of Babylon 4. Mary's boy child-Oh my Lord 5. Sunny

82. SAM BROWN Essential Listening: "Stop" (1989)The massively underrated Sam Brown's one big hit in the U.K. was the unforgettable 'Stop', a smash hit in 1989. I really don't think anybody else could do the song justice, and therefore never really warmed to Jamelia's recent version. TOP 5 TUNES1. Stop 2. This feeling 3. Can I get a witness 4. Kissing gate 5. With a little love

81. JOANNE CATHERALL & SUSAN SULLY Essential Listening: "Human League - Greatest Hits" (1995)Joanne and Susan, along with Philip Oakey, were the Human League - one of the definitive electropop bands of the eighties. 'Don't you want me' was one of the biggest selling songs of the era, and remains today one of the finest pop records ever recorded. Their career was mainly confined to the eighties, but they returned briefly in the mid-nineties with a couple more instant classics - 'Tell me when' & 'One man in my heart'. I've chosen this later Greatest Hits album as it contains those 2 tracks as well as all their eighties classics. TOP 5 TUNES1. Don't you want me 2. Lousie 3. Open your heart 4. Human 5. Tell me when

80. SADE Essential Listening: "The best of Sade" (1994)Sade's the type of artist you can put on after a long hard day at work, and just relax to - she has the voice of an angel basically. One of the albums I've always felt I should own but don't, is 'Diamond life'. Instead I have to make do with the best of, which is pure pleasure anyway! TOP 5 TUNES1. Smooth operator 2. Your love is king 3. No ordinary love 4. The sweetest taboo 5. By your side

79. MAMA CASS Essential Listening: "California Dreamin' - the very best of the Mamas & the Papas" (1995)It was watching 'The Beautiful Thing' that first made me realise the genius of Mama Cass. At the end of the film they played the song 'Dream a little dream of me' and I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever heard (so the film title was very apt!). That song remains at #3 on my all-time favourite songs list. After that I bought the Greatest Hits album and I also realised the pure genius that was 'It's getting better', which is also in my top 100! TOP 5 TUNES1. Dream a little dream of me 2. It's getting better 3. make your own kind of music 4. Monday monday 5. California dreamin'

78. JOSS STONE Essential Listening: "Mind, Body & Soul" (2004)What a fantastically powerful voice from someone so young! When I first heard a Joss song I assumed she was middle-aged and black. Placing her in here among the established female artists was quite tough, and she could be a lot higher this time next year! TOP 5 TUNES1. You had me 2. Fell in love with a boy 3. Super Duper love 4. Don't cha wanna ride 5. Holding out for a hero

77. PINK Essential Listening: "Can't take me home" (2000)I know a lot of people will say that 'Missundastood' was better, but I think her debut was pure perfection. The last album had a much more rockier feel to it and didn't do quite as well. All 3 albums are well worth buying though, and I eagerly await the fourth. TOP 5 TUNES1. Most girls 2. There you go 3. Just like a pill 4. Don't let me get me 5. Get the party started

76. KATIE MELUA Essential Listening: "Call off the search" (2003)I'm expecting to get mansoned for this but I don't care, she's amazing! When 'Closest thing to crazy' came out I had it on repeat play for about 3 months, it really is one of the most gorgeous, brilliant songs ever - certainly the best of the decade so far. TOP 5 TUNES1. The closest thing to crazy 2. Blame it on the moon 3. Tiger in the night 4. Crawling up a hill 5. Faraway voice

75. THE SPICE GIRLS Essential Listening: "Spice" (1996)Well they had to be in there somewhere! They came from nowhere in 1996 and took the world by storm, the world was divided between the lovers and the haters! I'm eagerly awaiting a nineties revival so I can listen to their albums again without being ridiculed - well the first two albums anyway, like most people I never got round to purchasing 'Forever'. TOP 5 TUNES1. 2 become 1 2. Stop 3. Goodbye 4. Wannabe 5. Too much

74. SIOBHAN MAHER Essential Listening: "River City People - Say something good" (1989)The River City People were marginally successful in the early nineties, and they didn't really fit into any category of music at the time. If there's one band's music that really tugs at my heart-strings, then it's these. 'say something good' was the outstanding debut and was full of heart-breaking lyrics, with her voice to match and fantastic tunes that it's impossible not to fall in love with. I still can't listen to 'Carry the blame' (a song about the guilt of having an abortion) without getting a lump in my throat, and their cover of 'California Dreamin'' is even better than the original. The second, and last, album 'This is the world' still had the lyrics and the voice, but the tunes weren't as great as the debut. Having said that, it's still got a couple of classics on there! TOP 5 TUNES1. Carry the blame 2. California dreamin' 3. (What's wrong with) dreaming? 4. Under the rainbow 5. When I was young

73. SHAKESPEAR'S SISTER Essential Listening: "Hormonally yours" (1992)Sioban Fahey and Marcella Detroit were Shakespear's Sister, now I think it's just Siobhan, who will appear again later on this chart as part of another band. 'Hormonally yours' is a fantastic album and an essential part of any record collection! 'Stay' remains an absolute classic to this day. TOP 5 TUNES1. Stay 2. I don't care 3. You're history 4. Goodbye cruel world 5. My 16th apology

72. EVA CASSIDY Essential Listening: "Songbird" (1998)Died before she had any success, and years later was made huge after being discovered by Terry Wogan! Her songs may all be covers, but her angelic voice makes each song her own, and her version of 'Fields of gold' is pure heaven. TOP 5 TUNES1. Fields of gold 2. Songbird 3. Wade in the water 4. Kathy's song 5. Drowning in the sea of love

71. SOPHIE ELLIS-BEXTOR Essential Listening: "Read my lips" (2001)Apart from singing on one of the greatest dance anthems of the decade ('Groovejet'), Sophie has established herself as one of the finest artists of pop and dance music of recent years with classics such as 'Murder on the dancefloor' (surely a disco anthem for many years to come!) TOP 5 TUNES1. Groovejet (If this ain't love) 2. Murder on the dancefloor 3. Get over you 4. I won't change you 5. Mixed up world
