Great to see Kate at 16 - she's probably my no.5 of all time. Yeah, I feel she should be higher really but I've got so many favourites!

7. LISA STANSFIELD Essential Listening: "Affection" (1989)When Lisa burst onto the club scene in 1989 with Coldcut on 'People hold on', and then released the brilliant 'Affection' album, most people agreed she was one of the years big finds. Lisa has the voice of a true soul diva, and the writing skills of a genius, yet she never receives the recognition she deserves any more. Last years comeback album 'The moment' was amongst her finest work, yet it flopped badly, as did her previous album, 1991's 'Face up'. In between those 2 albums, the greatest hits did well, but only the die-hard fan seemed interested in her new work. My opinion is that she left it too long after 1997's self-titled album, and music tastes changed during that time so Lisa stopped being cool. By the way, if you haven't seen her in 'Swing' then you really need to as it's fab! TOP 5 TUNES1. People hold on 2. All around the world 3. This is the right time 4. Change 5. In all the right places

6. ANNIE LENNOX Essential Listening: "Eurythmics - greatest hits" (1991)It's hard to believe that Annie has been successful for more than 25 years now, as she was having hits with the Tourists in the late 70's. My opinion of Ms. Lennox is that she is a musical legend and a total genius of the highest degree! It's hard to compare her to anyone before her, or after her for that matter, as her voice and musical style is totally unique. The Eurythmics undoubtedly produced some of the best music of the 80's, and Annie's debut solo album 'Diva' is a work of art. The last album 'Bare' was quite a heart-breaking album, but it also shows that her genius has never faltered. TOP 5 TUNES1. There must be an angel (playing with my heart) 2. Sisters are doin' it for themselves 3. I saved the world today 4. Right by your side 5. Precious

I'm going to leave it there for now. I'll leave you wondering for a bit longer as to who's going to be in the top 5 (well you know 1 of them anyway!)

90. TORI AMOS Essential Listening: "Little Earthquakes" (1992)This is probably far too low for a lot of people, but I must admit I'm only a casual listener of Ms. Amos. That's not to say I don't enjoy her music, because I do, it's just that I only own 'Little Earthquakes' and 'Tales of a librarian'. She has got a stunning voice though, and I feel that I really ought to explore her music further. TOP 5 TUNES1. Cornflake girl 2. Crucify 3. Professional widow (It's got to be big) 4. Silent all these years 5. Winter glad to see she made it on your list... my fav album of is boys for pele (such an eclectic record i lov it)... next are little earthquakes and under the pink at 2nd place, and 3rd is from the choirgirl hotel... fav songs include: father lucifer, professional widow, 1000 oceans, mr. zebra, past the mission... im sure im forgetting some ... she is definitely up there in my top 5 female musicians with bjork, pj harvey, and kate (afterall, w/o kate there might not have been a tori =0)

16. KATE BUSH Essential Listening: "Hounds of love" (1985)'Wuthering heights' is without a doubt in my top 5 all-time favourite songs, it is an absolute classic which nobody else should ever touch (Ok I know people have but they shouldn't have!). This year supposedly sees the release of her first album in 12 years and I for one can't wait! I hope it's another masterpiece like 'Hounds of love' and not another 'Sensual world' which, apart from 'This woman's work' and a couple of others, I could never really get into. Incidentally I am quite liking the Futureheads version of 'Hounds of love', although not on the same level that I love Kate's of course! TOP 5 TUNES1. Wuthering heights 2. Running up that hill 3. Babooshka 4. Hounds of love 5. Experiment IV yay luv kate ...and great top 5 tunes as well.. and would probably add "cloudbusting", "under ice", "this woman's work," "sat in your lap," "the sensual world"... to my top kate songs p.s. the new cover of her "hounds of love" is v. good (by the futureheads)

5. KIRSTY MacCOLL Essential Listening: "Titanic days" (1994)Kirsty is the highest female on my chart who is no longer with us, and hers was one celebrity death that I was greatly affected by as I had been a big fan since the 80's. Kirsty managed to match the cleverest of lyrics with infectious tunes, and she did it perfectly. Any one of her albums is essential, but 'Titanic days' just edges ahead as my current favourite. Her collaboration with the Pogues on 'Fairytale of New York' is not just the greatest Christmas song of all-time, but my 2nd favourite song EVER recorded!! TOP 5 TUNES1. Fairytale of New York 2. A new England 3. They don't know 4. Days 5. Can't stop killing you

So far, I've not noticed Aimee Mann, Shawn Colvin or Janis Ian... Don't suppose there's much chance of them completing the top 4 with Whitney!!!

4. STEVIE NICKS Essential Listening: "Fleetwood mac - Rumours" (1977)Probably my favourite band ever, I was first attracted to Fleetwood Mac when I heard Stevie singing on 'Dreams' sometime in the mid-eighties and I just had to find out who it was. I then got into the 'Rumours' album and thought it was the best and most different things I'd ever heard. Even though it was Stevie's voice that attracted me most to the band I love all their material whoever is singing, and I also think Christine McVie has a great and unique voice. Out of Stevie's solo albums I most love 1989's 'The other side of the mirror' which includes her biggest and best hit 'Rooms on fire'. TOP 5 TUNES1. Dreams 2. Rhiannon 3. Rooms on fire 4. Sara 5. Seven wonders

3. BELINDA CARLISLE Essential Listening: "Heaven on earth" (1987)Belinda has already appeared on this chart, at #65 as part of the Go-Go's. This #3 position is for her solo output, beginning with the fantastic 'Belinda' which many people won't have heard as it didn't chart in the U.K.. Her first hit album over here was the classic 'Heaven on earth' which hasn't aged one little bit, in fact all her albums sound just as great today as they always have. It feels like we've been waiting forever now for the comeback. TOP 5 TUNES1. Leave a light on 2. Circle in the sand 3. Heaven is a place on earth 4. World without you 5. Band of gold

2. MADONNA Essential Listening: "Like a prayer" (1989)People probably would have been shocked if the queen of pop hadn't appeared in this chart at some point, and as it is she takes the runner-ups position. It's hard to pick a favourite Madonna album as they're all great in their own way. (I was going to pick 'I'm breathless' just to be controversial!). There have been a few contenders to the crown of queen of pop, but Madonna wipes the floor with the lot of them quite frankly! Long live Queen Madge!! TOP 5 TUNES1. La isla bonita 2. Material girl 3. Like a prayer 4. Oh father 5. True blue

1. WHITNEY HOUSTON Essential Listening: "Whitney Houston" (1985)So there you have it. Whitney has been my favourite artist now ever since 'Saving all my love for you' was in the charts, coming up to 20 years now! The debut album is an absolute masterpiece and every song was good enough to have been a single. Many people went off her after 'I will always love you' topped the chart for 10 weeks, but I loved her all the more for it! In recent years she has been dogged by personal problems and obviously she has had a drug problem. The voice is still there though, and that is why I fell in love with her in the first place. TOP 5 TUNES1. Saving all my love for you 2. I will always love you 3. One moment in time 4. How will I know 5. Greatest love of all

Wow, some surprises there! Tori is ranked way too low, but then again, she's my all time favorite artist, and I am a little biased. My 5 songs would be: Caught a lite sneeze, Marianne, Twinkle, Raining blood (I know it's a cover!) and maybe Concertina
But, where are Björk and PJ Harvey?
I liked to see Kate Bush at 16, and my 5 choices would be: Leave it open, And dream of sheep, Suspended in Gaffa, Waking the witch and All the love.
