If it's about finding a song or act that nobody loathes, I'd imagine Lighthouse Family would do quite well. You could seperate people into two groups - one group that quite likes it, and the other group that feels absolutely nothing towards it at all. I can't imagine that it evokes strong enough feelings in anybody for them to say they actually dislike it.

I can't imagine that it evokes strong enough feelings in anybody for them to say they actually dislike it. Hmm, you might be right, actually. I was once hitchhiking from Scotland to France, with a friend. We got picked up by a vanload of British squaddies somewhere in Fife, driving back (via the ferry from Hull) to their base in Germany. Once over the Forth Road bridge, they stopped off at the South Gyle shopping centre on the outskirts of Edinburgh, and bought a few things, before continuing to drive us further south. Among those purchases was the cassette single of "High" by the Lighthouse Family, which, as we soon learned, contains precisely two tracks: "High", and "High (Remix)". They proceeded to play the tape, turning it over when necessary, uninterruptedly for at least two or three hours - for most of our shared journey from Edinburgh to where they dropped us off on the borders of West and South Yorkshire. You're quite right - I still can't bring myself that hate that song. I find being forced to become so familiar with it quite amusing. But yes, they are so passionless (even at their best - and "High" isn't a bad song by any means) that it's difficult to get worked up about one way or the other. So I think I agree with you. Would Level 42 fall into the same category? I'm probably inclined to think so.

And as for the Lightning Seeds...they started out wonderfully (is "Pure" not a perfect summer pop song, still), and then came back very well, but then (that album with images of strawberries everywhere) kind of lost a bit of their charm somehow - some of their later singles were rather more formulaic than they ought to have been. Obviously the fact we are concerning ourselves with the quality of their material already puts them apart from the Lighthouses.

I'm afraid they do in me...it's because of their utter blandness and aural wallpaper/yuppie partyness of their music that I detest their output. A bit like the likes of the Rah Band in the 1980s.

I agree with you about the Lighthouse Family for the same reasons (see also most of the output of Wet Wet Wet, Hot Chocolate, Stylistics, Simply Red, and currently The Script). But as for The Rah Band .... what even their famous Diana Ross meets Shakatak Sci-Fi p*ss take "Clouds Across The Moon"

Yes, that record couldn't get any more red braces and brick mobiles had it worn red braces and carried a brick mobile. It was so calculated to appeal to the big bang traders. Synth? Check. Robotic dancer? Check. Sounds like muzak? Check.
Simply Red definitely fit in that category. Also that sort of era Spandau Ballet and Genesis. Music for people who don't like music.

I like music and I like Spandau Ballet and we all have that record, that album we are not too proud to own, hehe. I think "Through the Barricades" is a great song. I also agree with someone who wrote earlier that we tend to hate songs made by an artist that we hate (ie, ABBA or The Beatles in my case) but I do like the song "Yesterday" for example. Still, I think is imposible that noone hates one particular song. I find most people like "smooth Criminal" even if they don't like Michael Jackson, but I'm pretty sure people in this same post can say they hate it.
