After watching the so terrible its brilliant The Jump on Channel 4 over the last 8 days; this is surely going to be a bit of an anti-climax.

Found out about a new event today that could be the highlight of the entire Games. The team luge relay! One male luger, one female, plus the double luge team - one starts off and goes down the hill, they touch a pressure pad suspended above the finish line and it opens the gates for the next sled to go down, with the clock still running. The standings are based on the total time from each team's three sleds. Sounds like something off Gladiators or Fun House!

DAY 1 (Saturday) GOLD MEDAL EVENTS:
BIATHLON Men's 10km sprint
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Women's 15km skiathlon
FREESTYLE SKIING Women's moguls
SNOWBOARDING Men's slopestyle
SPEED SKATING (LONG TRACK) Men's 5000m
No expected medals for GB on Day 1, though Jamie Nicholls did very well to reach the slopestyle final. He could be joined by Billy Morgan after the semi-final on Saturday morning.
Infostrada Sports has published its virtual medal table, predicting 6 medals for GB, though the gold and silver in the skeleton have been downgraded to silver and bronze, so their tally has GB finishing with no gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze. The USA are tipped to top the medal table (based on gold medals, rather than total number of medals) ahead of Norway and Canada. 26 nations are predicted to win at least one medal, which would tie the record set at the previous two Winter Olympics.

i was genuinely going to boycott this - then i realised that as i never watch the winter Olympics anyway, it would be about as effective as my boycotting tinned sardines.

I think any boycott based on watching tv is pointless isnt it? I mean do russia give a sh*t if someone in the uk decide to watch the voice instead?

That luge relay sounds great, the kids will love that, will have to make sure I tape it!

i suppose the reasoning behind the boycott is that low ratings will somehow have an impact. but protesting at the games themselves would be more effective. not many people who are boycotting the games would be willing or able to do that.

with the very successful and enjoyable coverage by the bbc of the olympics in london mixed with us doing amazing at the last winter olympics compared to previous years and with our rise to dominance in curling, skeleton and realistic medal chances elsewhere aswel as the rather enjoyable reality tv show "the jump" being aired the last week, it wouldn't surprise me that even with a boycott we will see record high viewing figures here in the uk for any winter olympics
im all for making a difference but only people acting by not going will have any effect, hit them in their pockets and vote with your feet

Just catalogued an autobiography on Steven Holcomb, the 4 man and 2 man bobsled driver who won gold in 2010, he was going blind until a new procedure gave him his sight back!

If it wasn't for the Winter Olympics taking place in Russia, the homophobia issue would only have received a tiny proportion of the coverage it has. The games taking place there has highlighted the issue in a way that would not have been possible otherwise. The best way of tackling prejudice, discrimination or injustice is by confronting it head on.

There was this point made last night about the blacks at the summer Olympics on this week. I though don't see it any similar since blacks were and now definitely are more featured in the games as athletes, you can't hide skin colour where as sexuality you can hide.
