Major Ouch for the US men's ice hockey team. :-( Major ouch indeed and by that scoreline too! I think the result from the Canada game previously mentally/physically destroyed them Also I didn't realise Teemu Selanne from Finland was still playing at 43 and being the oldest goal scorer in the Olympics. Wow!

Wow! 43 - that's quite something. Makes Ryan Giggs look like a kid!!

DAY 16 GOLD MEDAL EVENTS:
BOBSLEIGH Men's 4-man
CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING Men's 50km mass start freestyle
ICE HOCKEY Men's
=======================
A possible medal chance on the final day of these Winter Olympics as GB's no.1 4-man bobsleigh team lie 7th overnight. They were down in 10th after the first run, hampered by a bad starting position but they set the second-fastest time in run 2 and sit just 0.17 seconds off 3rd place. The 2nd GB crew are 18th.
Dave Ryding missed out on a possible top 10 finish in the men's slalom after grinding to a halt on his second run and losing at least 2 seconds. Sitting 27th after the first run meant he went 4th on the second run and looked to be going well until he had to virtually stop to avoid missing a gate. He ended up 18th, with a lot of skiers failing to finish but being 2 seconds quicker would've put him 9th.

Enjoyed Sochi - it's been pretty entertaining although I've struggled to catch much live due to the time difference. Roll on Rio!

Just finished watching the 4 man Bobsleigh.
Such a shame GB1 finished 5th just 0.11 seconds outside of bronze. GB2 finished 19th.
In the end their world ranking of 12, from which they started the first run counted against them, as they went from 10th to 7th to 6th to finish 5th.

The GB bobsleigh team did very well to finish 5th. A medal would have definitely represented over-achievement.
Watched the ice hockey final - Canada were awesome.

So that wraps up a very enjoyable fortnight.
GB did well; just a shame about the short track speed skating.
I really enjoyed some of the newer sports - skicross, half-pipe, snowboard parallel slalom, etc.
BBC coverage was great. A good balance between informed and enthusiastic commentaries, interviews and background pieces.
The Russians didn't ruin it, nor did they dominate it, even though they eventually topped the medal table (thanks to their recently acquired Korean and American competitors).
For me, Lillehammer was the best Winter Olympics, but Sochi comes second.

I had to spend 48 hours in Moscow last week. Not a huge amount of Olympic festivities evident, but I did meet a couple of the Sochi mascots...

Canada were awesome in that Hockey final, best team won it
Great pics Shireblogger and at least you could say their mascots were better than the London ones we had
Given what happened a few weeks/months back before the Olympics and the security fears in the country, it has been a well staged, but IMO a very surprisingly good Olympics and virtually incident free and credit to the Russians officials to make it happen.
BBC coverage deserves a praise too, they did their homework on their events and showed some passion in the events they commentated too.

Congratulations to GB on a very good showing. The medals are great, of course, but showing improvements in some cases is an achievement in itself and augurs well for the future.
