Is this the first time Luxembourg have not finished bottom? Same question for Litchenstein. First time for Liechtenstein in the Euros. Finished ahead of Luxembourg in the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Play-offs seeding update:
Definite seeds: Ukraine Sweden
Possible best 3rd place (if in play-offs, may or may not be seeded): Hungary
In play-offs (may or may not be seeded): Denmark Republic of Ireland
In play-offs (unseeded): Slovenia
Possible: Netherlands / Turkey Bosnia / Israel / Cyprus Croatia / Norway
For Ireland to be seeded, they need all of the following: - Turkey to draw with Iceland (or lose, if Netherlands don't beat Czech Republic) - Bosnia to lose at Cyprus (or draw, if Israel avoid defeat in Belgium) - Croatia to win at Malta and Norway to fail to win at Italy

Stephen Fletcher is so happy that Gibraltar are considered a full international soccer nation.

Stephen Fletcher is so happy that Gibraltar are considered a full international soccer nation. :-) So is Lewandowski. He equalled David Healy's record by scoring 13 goals in qualifying, but 6 of those were against Gibraltar.

If Italy lose to Norway in their final game, only 4 of the 9 top seeds will have won their group.

Austria drew their first game at home against Sweden and subsequently won every game to end with a near-perfect record.
I dislike the format of the final. I would prefer 4 groups of 6 in a round robin so every team plays 5 games. 2 qualify from each group which means we lose two thirds at the group stage but at least they all played 5 games. Then knockout until the end.

I don't like the format much either. However, having four groups of six would lead to a lot of "dead" matches. Besides, surely a 60-game group stage is somewhat excessive.

With that format, the group stage would take three weeks and a lot of matches would kick off in normal working hours. The whole tournament would last longer than the World Cup.

The Netherlands are 2-0 down in the match they must win to have any chance of making the play-offs. It's not looking good for the team that came third in the World Cup just over a year ago.

The football is generally better quality than the World Cup anyway. That has generally been because there are no real minnows. There's been no equivalent of utterly useless teams like Saudi Arabia. It remains to be seen how the likes of Iceland and Albania get one when they have three difficult matches in quick succession. Under your preferred format, these teams would surely struggle.

Even so, one or two teams struggling wouldn't kill off a group. A group of 6 would lead to very attacking play as teams know they need to go out to get as many wins as possible.

Turkey score in the 89th minute, and with Kazakhstan winning, that means they'll qualify if the scores stay the same!
