This is the first knock-out match involving England at a European Championships that has not gone to penalties, excluding the 3rd-place match in 1968 (when there were only 4 teams in the competition).
Wales keep alive their 100% record of getting further than England in every major championship finals that they have reached.

What about this person who has experience leading a nation who will be available from the beginning of September: Ha... Roy Hodgson is after that #10 position Yes, but in the charts with his lyrical reworking of the 1986 Eurythmics hit "Thor In My Side"

England lost in the semi-final to Yugoslavia. And Italy drew with the Soviet Union after extra time and went through on the toss of a coin! At least penalties is fair...
Since 1970, England has lost in the knockout stages to Argentina (twice), (West) Germany (3 times) and Portugal (twice). As well as Yugoslavia, Brazil, Italy and Iceland once each. (Italy twice if you count the 3rd place playoff in 1990)
In 1966 when we won the world cup, the 3 teams we beat in the knockout stages were Argentina, Portugal and West Germany, teams against which we have stumbled 7 times since.
Shows the difference between that team and post-1986.
Our only victories in knockout phases since 1986 have been against Paraguay, Belgium, Cameroon, Spain (lucky, they had a perfectly good goal disallowed for off-side), Denmark and Ecuador. The last of those was 10 years ago.

Shame in a way that Wales and Iceland are still in the tournament. Means i'll still watch it despite a better event currently taking place at the same time.
Not that many on here are that bothered.

Not that many on here are that bothered. I actually find football tournaments less stressful to watch when your team is not in it/eliminated. I swear it is no coincidence I rate Euro 1984 as the best international tournament I have witnessed. There have been some really great games: Hun v Por; Fra v Rom; Wal v Slv; Aut v Hun; Cro v Spn; Bel v Hun; Ita v Spn; Pol v Swi; etc so far in this tournament and I like the fact that Wales & Iceland have got this far ... whilst Italy's reward for knocking Spain out is to play Germany; and then probably France in the Semi Finals.

They should re-implement the 3rd place match since there are 6 groups now, like they do in the World Cup tournament, I can't see the problem with it to be honest if its played the day before the final by the two losing sides, its not as if the 2 losing teams are going to be that tired to play after 2 days rest.

They've not had the 3rd place thing for a while now, do remember the footballers don't want to get too tired before they go on holiday and then back home to count their vast piles of cash!

As I recall, they abandoned the 3rd place play-off due to lack of interest.

I'd use a Swiss format so every team plays the same number of games except the top 2 that play one extra when they compete in the final.
UEFA Nations League might be more "interesting" but it still leads to a knockout phase.
In any case England are clearly over-rated , and we were in 2014 too. We simply don't have world class players.

Iceland don't have world class players and they still won, I think England have plenty great individuals it's the team play that's the problem and lack of strategy. Hence Hodgsons fault

Iceland have players with the opposite attributes of those of England. Johann Berg Gudmunsson for example plays brilliantly for his country but often fails to turn up when playing for his club.
Actually he was our best player of 2014-15 and last season really we were just awful. No proper tactics, no strategy, etc. A bit like England in Euro 2016 but worse and obviously with less talented players.

I wonder if the England players have been avoiding shopping in Iceland since losing.
