We should get a German in. You mean one called Jurgen Klinsmann?

Goodbye, Wales and thanks for the fairytale. But after the win over Belgium I was sure in their win in the semi-final.

I'm off for a petit pois.
Great match, Germany had so many chances, it just wasn't to be, France were too good for them. I wasn't fussed though, as the game was entertaining to watch, but I was supporting Germany. As a host nation I just hope France give Ronaldo and his boys a really good thrashing on Sunday.
Great day for Sports, Tennis (Men's final) from 1pm and Euro final from 7pm

Apparently France are the first host nation in nearly 50 years (50 years less 23 days to be precise) to beat (West) Germany in a major tournament.

Hmm, I wonder who was the last host nation to do so Turns out the nation in question is also: 1. The last nation to have beaten France in any international. 2. The last nation to have beaten Portugal in any international. 3. The last nation to have beaten Wales in any international prior to Wales' semi-final defeat. 4. The second-to-last nation to have beaten Germany in any international prior to Germany's semi-final defeat (damn the Slovaks).

What a flukey win, Ronaldo has done sod all. I really feel gutted for France as a host nation to get that far to the final.
And for the record, that was the second match that was taken to extra time for a win since 1960 the first European match.

Euro 96 and Euro 2000 were both won in extra time, both with golden goals.

Not exactly the most deserving winners, but they did get the job done, just like Greece in 2004. Scary that the only side they beat in normal time was Wales - an achievement shared with England.
And at least the French do now know what it is like for an opponent to get away with handball in extra time.
Interesting point made by the BBC commentators before the match that this was the second time (after 1998) that France were contesting a final on home soil against a Portuguese-speaking nation whose star player (Ronaldo) failed to deliver on the pitch.

Also Greece beat Portugal in the final as host nation in 2004, and Portugal beat France in the final as host nation (2016)

Other than Wales and Iceland's progress, it's been an uninspiring tournament all around. The goal from Portugal was a decent goal though but France had their chances in normal time.

The line-up for next year's Confederations Cup is almost complete: Russia (hosts) Germany (2014 World Cup winners) Portugal (Euro 2016 winners) Chile (2015 Copa America winners) Mexico (2015 CONCACAF Cup winners) Australia (2015 Asian Cup winners) New Zealand (2016 OFC Nations Cup winners) The last remaining place will go to next year's Africa Cup of Nations winners. All 6 teams who have qualified won their respective title either in extra time or on penalties.
