As Russian I must ask very wise question : Do we really need World Cup - 2018 ? Especially after a shameful games against Korea, Algeria and 0:3 from Wales. What's next ? Maybe defeat from any microstate (San Marino, Luxembourg e.t.c.) ? The most popular game was born in England and dead in Russia.

England in this tournament much like having sex after a few drinks. On top, plugging away admirably, but just cannot finish the job as we struggle to reach a semi You've dug to the lowest depths quoting paddy power!

We have a lot of strikers but none of them world class. No Lineker, Shearer or Owen in his peak.

Spend most their time brawling to practice playing football Nice to see Wales winning so comfortably and not a Bale goal or assist in sight Didn't Bale get an assist for the 2nd goal? I'll admit I only realised after watching the highlights though.
England game was disappointing, but the Wales game was quite comfortably the best British/Irish game so far, not just because they thrashed Russia but also because Neil Taylor scored, which I was absolutely delighted about. Not bad for someone whose last goal was for Wrexham in the Conference!

Don't think he did, came up as no assist on my app. I haven't checked the official stats though but from what I understand the assist was for the shot he missed. It's another phase of play once the gk saves it and bounces back out for another shot

Northern Ireland game was a 1-0 thrashing, not sure why I bothered sitting through that! Although not bad really as I thought they'd get thrashed anyway. Hopefully they've done enough to go through, not having a negative goal difference should help them.

I hope Croatia can beat Spain so that Germany, Spain and Italy all end up in the same quarter of the draw. YAY! Much love to Croatia

Croatia really played well... Spain play Italy in the last 16, should be a great match.

Round of 16 line-up as it stands:
Switzerland v Poland Croatia v Slovakia/E3/F3 Wales v NI/Turkey F1 v E2
Germany v Albania/Slovakia Italy v Spain France v NI/E3 England v F2
Of the third-place teams, Slovakia and NI are definitely through. Slovakia will play Germany unless Albania get through, NI will play France unless Turkey do not get through.
Quite a lot of big names in the bottom half of the draw, as well as England.
For the remaining groups:
Sweden, RoI and Austria will all go through if they win their final games and go out otherwise.
Belgium will be through if they avoid defeat to Sweden. If they lose, they will be out if they lose by 4+ goals or RoI beat Italy. A 1-goal defeat will see Belgium through if RoI do not beat Italy.
Hungary are definitely through. Iceland and Portugal will be through if they avoid defeat, otherwise they will be out.

I think it became clear tonight England finishing 2nd very much put us in the wrong side of the draw.

Great for Northern Ireland - all 3 domestic sides through, which is a real achievement. I can see Wales going a long way in their side of the draw. Huge tactical mistake by England - getting through to the final out of their side of the draw will be an almighty feat for any team (and England doesn't have a great record of repeated success, nor goal scoring.
I can't see Eire getting through, unfortunately, but stranger things have happened.
Iceland all the way for me!

I don't want us to avoid all the big teams. The fun of particpating in a contest like this is to get to play against them.
A quarter-final against France will be great to watch. Of course we both have to get there first. Obviously they'll be favourites with home advantage.
I'd still prefer to see a "swiss style" tournament and think it would work better than groups followed by knockout.

Hoping Hungary can trash Portugal, actually Hungary are looking good, with that first win, with such an easy draw, they probably can get to the last 8, I wouldn't rule them out just yet.

Portugal equalise. Hungary now only top on goal difference. Portugal now one of the best 3rd place teams as it stands.
