I hear that a lot. But then people said that about Francis Jeffers at one point
He wouldn't be the first player to break into the league scoring 20+ before vanishing into obscurity.
What makes him a top striker?
No striker can sustain goals at the top level if they are as thick as a plank of wood and have no pace. You can get away with not having one, but not having either intellegence or pace is a killer. His strength is very average for a big lad and he has no skill whatsoever either.
Apart from his ability to strike a ball, decent physical presence, perfect age and the confidence his past goal scoring exploits gave him and of course an extended run in a decent team he has nothing.
This season Spurs have brought in another striker and dropped him back a position. His confidence has gone and it won't be long before his age catches up with him. He isn't the main man anymore and that is almost entirely what he is all about
What baffled me was when he didn't have the intelligence to realise he couldn't take corners or free kicks! I read he only scored 2 goals from outside the box all season but still tried 30 shots from outside the box in 3 or 4 England games

Ofcourse, like you have to tell dogs or children not to run out onto a road because they don't have the intelligence to realise what they are doing is awful
The manager is as much to blame for being such a fanny but that's another story

So Portugal lost last night and the Dutch and France drew? I was watching Harrogate Town beat FC United of Manchester 3-1, in front of 1090 fans. Some good teams in the Conference (National) North, there are 11 teams with an average crowd over 1000, whereas Conference South has none!

the problem with the international game is there isn't a great deal of difference these days between Switzerland and Portugal or Bulgaria and Luxemburg or even Sweden and Netherlands
Switzerland were average now they are slightly above average Portugal were good but now they are average without Ronaldo Bulgaria were ok but now they are very average Luxemburg were awful but now are competitive Sweden were ok and are still ok and Netherlands were one of the best but are now slightly above average
the end result is all the poor teams are better and all the good teams are worse, I guess that leads to some very boring games but also anyone can win a tournament

It makes the qualifying tournaments far more interesting than they were 20+ years ago, when they were simply a process that the likes of Italy, Germany, Russia, France and Spain had to go through, before the proper competition started. I've also been won around to the World Cup and Euro Championships having more participants. The number of dull matches at finals seems to have been reduced, and the number of shocks and genuinely exciting games has certainly jumped up. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Yeah for sure and most the dull games are big nations playing each other!
I was very impressed with Hungary, Albania and of course Wales. I see Kosavo are now in amongst qualifying and got a result the other day

Joking aside, Maidstone aren't in it anymore and they are the biggest non-league team in Kent. I've never quite understood why Ebbsfleet don't attract more fans than they do. Maybe they've suffered with Dartford's rise over the years as I think they get fairly similar attendances these days. That's a very impressive stat for Conf N though, I have thought in the last year or so that there seems to be a number of small teams in Conference South.
Interesting to discover that Eastbourne now have a 3G/4G pitch, seems to be catching on, did like the idea that in future many games in Conference South may survive bad weather when football league games won't!

Yeah I'm pleased Darlo are back up there, I'd like to see Stockport getting out of the hole they are in as well, too big a team to be Conf. North.

Agreed. 29th August 2009 I went to a league match at Edgeley Park. It finished 1-1. Stockport County have since been relegated 3 times. And Southampton will be playing Inter Milan in Europe next month. Incredible to think that the two clubs were equally matched just 7 years ago.

Forgot to mention Slough Town. If they win promotion to Conf South at some point it would make a difference as could see them getting crowds of 1000. They got 1401 for their first game at the new ground!

PaddyReading 2-1 Ipswich Presume you didn't see it but your team were unlucky tonight. Not sure I've ever seen Mick McCarthy so down in an interview.

I was working. Sounded like the ref wanted the limelight. Yes, a neutral mate said pretty much the same thing. Must admit I was praying for a late winner as I was expecting us to win, mainly because we always seem to beat you at home, but I did feel guilty afterwards when we didn't deserve it, especially after McCarthy's interview. Still, we were unlucky not to beat Brighton going by the highlights (and Stam also confirmed we should have won that game) so Friday evened out the luck for us. Been a brilliant start to the season.
What do you expect from Ipswich this season?

QPR 0 Newcastle 6
Simply wow!
Just as importantly, it's the 4th league game in a row where we've kept a clean sheet. I can't remember the last time we achieved that.
