6. BOB WELCH
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1971-1974
After the loss of Jeremy Spencer in 1971, and with Peter Green having left earlier, that just left Danny Kirwan and Christine McVie to front the band for Mick and John, and so they brought in Bob Welch to help steer the band in a new direction. He featured on 5 albums, starting with the brilliant Yes-like Future Games, and ending with Heroes Are Hard To Find - which was one album before the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Another excellent songwriter, he wrote the brilliant Sentimental Lady, as well as Lay It All Down, Hypnotized, Emerald Eyes, The Ghost and Silver Heels... There were many others too, but with the top 5 being so strong I didn't get chance to use any others for the purpose of this comtest. Welch died with a shot to the chest in 2012, aged 66. It was ruled as suicide.

5. DANNY KIRWAN
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1968-1972
Of all the stories I have read about the various band members, it is Danny Kirwan's that I find the saddest. With a talent far greater than the recognition he gets, his guitar playing and songwriting skills were second to none. He not only featured on, but was responsible for some of the greatest songs on the four albums Then Play On, Kiln House, Future Games and Bare Trees before his alcoholism and extreme temper caused him to be fired from the band in 1972. He released 3 solo albums in the seventies, but his mental health had deteriorated and he ended up homeless and living on the street... Nobody seems to know where he is now, but for somebody with such talent to end up like that really breaks my heart.... If you want to check out some of his best tunes then I can definitely recommend to begin with Sands Of Time, Dust, One Sunny Day, Sometimes, Child Of Mine, Dragonfly and Something Inside Of Me... There's loads more though, and he's only out now because of a truly magnificent top 4...

4. PETER GREEN
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1967-1970
It's hard to imagine now, but back in the early days of the band Peter Green was Fleetwood Mac, and when you hear those classic blues tunes now you think: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. It must have been one hell of a shock to the band and fans alike then, when he announced he was leaving the band in 1970. And surely, if it wasn't for Mick Fleetwood's perseverance and knack in finding great musicians, then the band would have ended there and then. Peter wrote some truly heart-wrenching stuff, such as Man Of The World, which could only have come from a place where he was actually experiencing those emotions himself... Some blame his mental deterioration on some LSD which he and Danny Kirwan took at a party one night, which would certainly explain why both musicians went downhill so fast, but I think there were plenty of drugs floating around right from those early days anyway, so who knows what really happened? One things for sure, it's a miracle that out of the 15 players on this countdown, 13 are still alive into (and going into for most) their seventies! As well as Man Of The World, check out Need Your Love So Bad, Albatross, Oh Well (Parts 1&2), Black Magic Woman, The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown) (apparently written while he was in an LSD-infused dream) , Before The Beginning and I Loved Another Woman.

3. LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1975-1987, 1997-present
After Bob Welch left the band in 1974, Mick Fleetwood remembered hearing a guitarist and performer called Lindsey Buckingham and immediately called him to invite him to join the band. Lindsey at that time was part of a duo called Buckingham Nicks, which was him and his girlfriend, another unknown called Stevie Nicks. If it wasn't for his insistance that they come as a pair, and it was both or none, then Fleetwood Mac as most people know it now would have looked very different... Of course there were turbulent times ahead, and the loving relationship didn't last long - thankfully, or else we'd never have got Rumours!!! Buckingham left the band in 1987, just after the release of their biggest album in a decade, Tango In The Night, and he missed out on the subsequent tour (which I'd have been gutted had I bought tickets to see them at that point!). Thankfully he rejoined in 1997, when he met up again with Mick Fleetwood, resulting in them contacting the rest of the classic line-up and a successful tour followed... an album of the tour called The Dance is well worth a listen too. The songs used for this contest were: Go Your Own Way, Tusk, Second Hand News, Never Going Back Again, Big Love, Monday Morning, Oh Diane, Crystal and You And I, Part II

2. STEVIE NICKS
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1975-1990, 1997-present
Yes, really.... If I had included solo material then Stevie would have won hands down, but with the bands' material she is just pipped to the post by the other leading lady of the group... It was incredibly close between the top three though! Nicks joined the band in early 1975, along with then boyfriend Lindsey Buckingham, with whom she performed as the duo Buckingham Nicks. They only released one album which is well worth a listen. Stevie stayed with the band until 1990, after the end of the Behind The Mask tour, after a fall-out with Mick Fleetwood when he wouldn't let her use her song Silver Springs on her upcoming solo album Timespace: The Best Of Stevie Nicks. Apparently he was saving it for use on the upcoming Fleetwood Mac box set 25 Years - The Chain. It seems mad now that another 25 years have passed and they are into their 50th year.... I wonder if we'll get another box set - here's hoping!! For this contest I have used: Dreams, Rhiannon, Silver Springs, Seven Wonders, Gypsy, Sara, Angel, Beautiful Child, Gold Dust Woman and Landslide

1. CHRISTINE McVIE
Years with Fleetwood Mac: 1970-1998, 2014-present
Christine McVie (née Perfect) joined Fleetwood Mac in 1970 as a backing singer after marrying original member John McVie. She had originally belonged to the band Chicken Shack but left in 1969 before recording her first solo album, Christine Perfect, which inlcuded her fantastic cover of I'd Rather Go Blind - a #14 hit for Chicken Shack. She sang backing vocals on the 1970 Fleetwood Mac album Kiln House, as well as painting the beautiful scene on the cover, before finally singing 2 of her own compositions on 1971's Future Games. Her songwriting got better and better over the years and, although there are some hidden gems on those early albums (Remember Me, Why, Spare Me A Little Of Your Love...) she really came into her own once Buckingham and Nicks joined the band - incidentally, McVie was such a respected memeber of the band by this point that she had the final say on whether another woman was allowed to join the band when Lindsey Buckingham insisted on Stevie Nicks coming with him.... Luckily they got on like a house on fire, and the rest is history.... Christine decided to retire from the band after The Dance tour in 1998 after she developed a phobia about flying, and other than a solo album In The Meantime in 2004, which features the fantastic Friend and You Are, she disappeared off the radar until her return to the band for their 2014 tour... An event I am eternally grateful for as it meant I finally got to see my favourite band in their 5-piece glory in 2015!! Christine is currently working on a new album with Lindsey Buckingham, due for release in June.. It will be her first new material in 13 years and I can't wait!!! Songs I have used for this contest: Little Lies, Everywhere, Songbird, Don't Stop, Isn't It Midnight, You Make Loving Fun, Say You Love Me, As Long As You Follow, Save Me and Think About Me
So there you have it. I hope you have enjoyed this little journey through Fleetwood Mac's history... and if you haven't, well I've enjoyed doing it anyway.

It is. But then, if you look at their Greatest Hits album released in 1988, out of the 17 tracks: Christine is responsible for 7 of them, Stevie 6, and Lindsey just 4.

I don't know - Tango in the night is a classic, as are Tusk and Fleetwood Mac (1975). Time is about as different from Rumours as you can get... you might like the Bekka Bramlett and Christine McVie tracks on there.
