Finally watched the first 1982 episode at the last minute.
Phil Lynott is an odd opener, because he's not there and there's no video so we get some, er, unusual dancing from some young men who seem to have forgotten their shirts.
I suppose this predates the tradition of opening the TotP year with a new act.
Bit of live video from Foreigner, demonstrating why miming was invented because this is a really crap performance. No wonder they cut it off after about a minute.
[according to Popscene there are some US videos between this and the next song]
One-hit-wonder Alton Ellis has one of the most popular disco tracks at the moment, according to Peter Powell. Presumably in the sense that it's played in discos, it doesn't sound very disco-like. What are those stains on his jacket?
Blame the underwhelming start to this show, but this Meatloaf single is better than I remember it. Helped him to his first Number One album too. But why is he wearing a Walls Vienetta instead of a shirt?
"The" Mobiles and their performance are so thoroughly of their time they could be mistaken for a parody. This isn't necessarily a bad thing.
Peter Powell starts the chart rundown at thirty and then tells us Shakatak are "just outside that Top 40". They strangely seem to have backing singers but no lead singer. One of Zoo tries to mouth along to an instrumental section.
Jon & Vangelis get the prize for biggest disparity between the instruments they're pretending to play and the instruments audible on the track. Which must be why they cut to still photos during the synth solo.
The Human League are still Number One, but they only have two microphones between three singers. At least forcing this into mono makes it sound slightly different from usual.
Playout to Madness and some men who are wearing only underpants and dog collars showing how little body hair they have.
