Not according to The Telegraph: The X Factor won round one of the Saturday night ratings war with an audience of 9.2 million tuning into its first live show, but lost significant ground to an Olympian-studded Strictly Come Dancing which added more than 1 million viewers.
The first live show of ITV's latest series of The X Factor, which has struggled compared to last year and is down about 2 million viewers, attracted an average of 9.2 million viewers between 8pm and 10.20pm.
The show, which managed a 40% share, with a five-minute peak of 10.3 million.
BBC1's Strictly Come Dancing launched its first live show on Saturday night, managing an average audience of 8.7 million between 6.30pm and 7.45pm, a 40.7% share.
The show, which has sought to tap into Olympic fever featuring athletes Victoria Pendleton and Louis Smith, notched up a five-minute peak of 10.2 million.

The best act has gone first That's a bit of a stretch to be honest, but she certainly should have stayed over Rylan. Still, the X Factor loves to make sure it stays on the front page as much as possible regardless of actual talent, so it's not surprising really.

Are we 100% sure there'll be a wildcard? How's that going to work? 4 more going through to the live shows or 1 of 4 chosen by the judges? Did you watch the show?

I love Rylan. I was literally crying with laughter for about 20 minutes after he was told he was going through. Much amusement. And we have something similar to look forward to every single week he's still inthe competition. Huzzah!

The only thing that surprises me about this is that heads haven't rolled in the swimming team first.
I don't think the target of 8 medals was overambitious to be honest. Yes, the 4 gold medals was great, but lets be honest, if we hadn't got 3 of those, it'd have been a bit of a shock Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis were clear favourites for their events. Greg Rutherford was the only unexpected gold.
We had an awful lot of athletes with 'medal chances' that underperformed, many not even reaching the final of their competitions. Yes, Idowu was one of those, but also Shakes-Drayton, Andy Turner, Dai Greene, Holly Bleasdale, all should have done better. And the "sound in principal but ultimately pointless" decision around the 800m women's selection didn't help - there was no way Lindsay Sharpe was going to win a medal with her PB well outside the A standard for qualification.
There were also some great moments of athletes surpassing expectation in a major way - Andrew Osagie and Lawrence Clarke spring to mind - but they were people that even performing far better than expected, they were still never going to be in with a medal shout.

I actually think out of the three of them, her head is the most screwed on. "The sl*t that cried victim" especially makes me giggle.

If the medal tables were combined, China would be top with 133 golds, USA second with 77, and GB third with 63.
It's a pretty impressive haul given that we're just a tiny little island!

Samantha is a goner then. You said that last time! I'm hoping Danica gets kicked. Preferably repeatedly, in the head.

That should most definitely be an Olympic sport. Attractive people only though please.

I woudn't remove archery, but I would make them shoot with a stick and a piece of string, instead of these fancy-pants bells-and-whistles bits of plastic with all kinds of enhancements stick out fo them.
Personally I'd argue for more events rather than less. The more different types of sport that are celebrated as part of the Olympics, the better.

Just wanted to add my thanks to MrH for the two Olympic threads. I may not have posted much, but I dropped in every morning to read the write up of our medal chances for the day.

As for Sports Personality of the Year - last year there was a lot of carping from feminists and their apologists for no women on the short-list. I'm of the belief people should be judged on merit and oppose 'quotas' and 'positive discrimination'. I agree with you - however, there were a number of females last year that based on merit alone should have made the list, and didn't. That's what needs looking at.

In the fighty sports you can't really have a playoff though. Two people get the crap kicked out of them and then have to get into the ring again to fight each other? It would be amusing, but someone would compain about human rights or something.

What was she supposed to do? Brake? if that was the only way she could change over at the right time, yes. it looks like an easy mistake to make, and yes, it must be awful for her, but i definitely have more sympathy for her team mate. The person in front is supposed to move out at an appropriate time for the second person to overtake though. It was Jess that moved out to early that made Victoria think it was ok to move past. Both of them are responsible. It's a shame but the rules are the rules. Even if nobody is sure why that particular rule exists in the first place!

Does it really make a difference when one person overtakes the other? What is the point in this rule?

Remove a player from each team every 3 minutes during extra time. By shooting them. That ought to get them attacking during the first 90 minutes, leading to much more exciting games of football.

I still have a little chuckle to myself everytime someone says 'Ricky Martin'.
When Gabrielle was fired I was quite disappointed - Stephen has made such a hash of so many things that I honestly thought he was a goner. And then he got fired too, so I was less disappointed. Honestly I think both of them being fired was a fair outcome.

And who exactly is this Elvis guy? and what did he ever do? Some people are acting like he is as famous as Marcus from X-factor? whats that about Firstly, the fact that you've mentioned Elvis in a thread where he is not mentioned at any any point shows that you do indeed know who Elvis is. So if you were trying to make some kind of point, it rather failed. Secondly, whatever your point is, appears to be suggesting that I was comparing the public awareness of White Stripes to that of Marcus; that is not the case at all. Indeed, your mention of Elvis in the same conceptual sentence as my mention of White Stripes only further highlights the point I was making; they're in no way in the same league, and yet there you are suggesting that people have the same level of awareness for White Stripes as they do for Elvis. That simply isn't the case, and highlights just how fans of a particular music genre can be over-enthusiastic about their successes. It's not just rock fans - everybody does it. I genuinely do not recall the song, and while I recognise the band name White Stripes, I would struggle without the help of the internet to tell you a single thing they've done. I believe that this outlook, whether you wish it to be the case or not, is the general public awareness of this band, and this track. Both are little-known outside of the circles they move in. While they may well be critically acclaimed within those circles, as raliverpool points out, they did not gain the same level of public awareness for their material as you would perhaps like to believe. Certainly not to the same extent as Sex On Fire, which is a comparison made earlier in the thread.
