October 26th: Aliens (1986)
IMDB Rating: 8.3
Premise: Fifty-seven years after surviving an apocalyptic attack aboard her space vessel by merciless space creatures, Officer Ripley awakens from hyper-sleep and tries to warn anyone who will listen about the predators.
Razzle's Review: Ok, its in space, its in the future so some might say its Sci Fi but it is scary and I'm counting it as horror because I'm running short on films and wanted to re-watch it lol, not often is a follow up as good as the original but in this case it might even be better, the whole thing is bigger, faster, scarier. The Oscar winning special effects are just one highlight of an intense movie that does have a lot of set-up to get through but the slow build adds to the tension, at the time there weren't many strong female leads so Ripley morphing from traumatized, haunted individual to an ass kicking female Rambo is a great and at the time unexpected character arc, not to mention the iconic end fight scene, love this one
Trailer:
Quotes: Private Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man? Private Vasquez: No. Have you?

October 27th: V/H/S/94 (2021)
IMDB Rating: 5.5
Premise: A police S.W.A.T. team investigates about a mysterious VHS tape and discovers a sinister cult that has pre-recorded material which uncovers a nightmarish conspiracy.
Razzle's Review: The worst example of found-footage films, the film features four short segments connected loosely through shaky found footage, its disjointed, boring and a chore to watch, its the first and only film here i actively hated, at least Hostage House (3.5 rating) was well shot and had a beginning, middle and end, this has none of that

October 28th: A Creepshow Holiday Special (2020)
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Premise: An anxious man who is trying to figure out his disorder enlists into an organization called Shapeshifters Anonymous without realizing that Santa Clauses are after him.
Razzle's Review: More of a short film, about 50 minutes long but I've been struggling to fit full length films in so this one was perfect, I love the classic Creepsshow anthologies so I was delighted to find a new tv show and several stand alone specials, this one was ok, not vintage Creepshow but it was worth a watch, very Christmas themed, basically warewolves being hunted by Santa ha. It was fun
Trailer:
Quotes: Robert Weston: "Where did you learn to shoot like that?" Irena Reid: "I teach High School"

October 29th: Blood Quantum (2019)
IMDB Rating: 5.6
Premise: The dead are coming back to life outside the isolated Mi'kmaq reserve of Red Crow, except for its Indigenous inhabitants who are strangely immune to the zombie plague.
Razzle's Review: I have a week or so left of my Shudder subscription so this is another one from there, getting my moneys worth, sounds like my kind of thing, zombie outbreak, lots of gore etc, pretty low budget effort but decent enough. Director Jeff Barnaby has described this film as a commentary on colonialism which makes sense as the Native Americans were immune to the zombie virus, the ending was predictably stupid though but then people will be people
Trailer:
Quotes: Lysol: "These people ain't seen a brown skin man, since their grandparents bought one" which is a fragment of the song "Down Rodeo" by the band "Rage Against The Machine".

October 30th: Hellraiser (1987)
IMDB Rating: 7.0
Premise: A woman discovers the newly resurrected, partially formed, body of her brother-in-law. She starts killing for him to revitalize his body so he can escape the demonic beings that are pursuing him after he escaped their sadistic underworld.
Razzle's Review: Ha, this was one of my mams favourite films, I remember she used to have it on VHS, a low budget British classic horror gore-fest that became a classic of hte horror genre. The film has a few decent storylines from the skinless uncle Frank, who recently returned from the dead to the appearance of iconic movie monster Pinhead and his fellow demons (Cenobites), each of them an S&M-influenced being who delights in causing pain and suffering, the ending is a bit meh but it is another iconic must watch horror clsasic
Trailer:
Quotes: [Pinhead appears from the shadows behind Kirsty] Lead Cenobite: We have such sights to show you!

HALLOWEEN: Halloween Kills (2021)
IMDB Rating: 5.7
Premise: The saga of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode continues in the next thrilling chapter of the Halloween series.
Razzle's Review: What more fitting way to round this off than with the new Halloween film, I love that they got Jamie Lee Curtis back in these films. Laurie Strode (Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie's basement in the last film thinking they finally killed Michael Myers but I don't think its much of a spoiler to say they failed and the nightmare continues
Trailer:
Quotes: Laurie Strode: "I'm coming for you, Michael"

October 1st: Shark Bait (2022)
IMDB Rating: 4.4
Premise: A group of friends enjoying a weekend steal a couple of jetskis racing them out to sea, ending up in a self inflicted head-on collision. They struggle to find a way home with a badly injured friend while from the waters below predators lurk
Razzle's Review: Classic dumb, horndog teens do something stupid and completely avoidable to end up stranded out at sea in shark infested waters, see The Reef, Open Water, Great White etc. Not a bad watch, but nothing new to add to the shark genre, some of the gory scenes were pretty good though and the more annoying the main characters the more you root for the shark! Sure its not a classic like Jaws, but the story was alright
Trailer:
Quotes: Tyler: "Shar... Shark"

October 2nd: The Crow (1994)
IMDB Rating: 7.5
Premise: A poetic guitarist Eric Draven is brought back to life by a crow a year after he and his fiancée are murdered. The crow guides him through the land of the living, and leads him to his killers who will soon learn the legend of the crow and the secret to the vigilante's invincibility
Razzle's Review: Never seen this one before even though its almost 30 years old now! Very dark and brooding vigilante movie that reminded me of Christopher Nolan era Batman, I'd be very surprised if this wasn't in some way inspiration in the direction Nolan took Batman all them years later. You have to watch this with your 90's cap on, for example there was a lot of stunt man work here so as a result plenty of lame falls clearly onto crash mats and at the start of the movie the police is inspecting the murder scene. The police officer can be seen smoking a cigarette in the room where the crime was committed and actually putting the cigarette out on the floor, while his colleagues and forensics are still investigating lol but these things don't detract too much from what was a good movie
Trailer:
Quotes: Sarah: [voiceover] If the people we love are stolen from us, the way to have them live on is to never stop loving them. Buildings burn, people die, but real love is forever.

October 3rd: Valley Of The Dead (2020)
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Premise: Sure, you've seen dozens, maybe hundreds, of zombie movies, but have you seen a zombie movie set during the Spanish Civil War? Basically, during the Spanish Civil War, the Nazis conduct experiments on the civilian population of a remote area in Spain, turning them into zombies so the Francoists and revolutionaries stop fighting each other and unite to fight the greater threat.
Razzle's Review: What's not to like? It's a dark-humored horror movie about opposing soldiers, Nationalista and Republicans from the Spanish Civil War of 1936, that need to join forces against a common enemy... Nazi zombies. Along the way they pick up ordinary fascists, communists, a Muslim and even a Nun (with a big gun). It was originally set for release in 2020 but Covid delayed its release until 2022, originally a Spanish film called "Malnazidos" dubbed into English, I enjoyed this one, it was funny, well shot, decent story
Trailer:
Quotes: "When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth."

October 4th: Day Shift (2022)
IMDB Rating: 6.1
Premise: A hard-working, blue-collar dad just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.
Razzle's Review: Pretty popular on Netflix this one, more of an action comedy about vampires but it's a good one, great cast too with Dave Franco, Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg. The action and fighting are laughable but fun to watch and there are elements of the buddy cop movies here, i mean it's Jamie Foxx and Snoop Dogg killing vampires, it's not deep but it is good
Trailer:
Quotes: "Big John Elliott: That's what I love about LA. All the damn vampires"

October 5th: The Empty Man (2020)
IMDB Rating: 6.2
Premise: On the trail of a missing girl, an ex-cop comes across a secretive group attempting to summon a terrifying supernatural entity.
Razzle's Review: The film starts off with four hikers in the mountains, in 1995 that fall into a cavern and discover something that shouldn't have been discovered, flash forward to 2018 an ex-cop starts investigating some incredibly suspicious and logic defying deaths. The , if you find an empty bottle on a bridge at night and blow into it whilst thinking about the Empty Man, on the first night you hear him, on the second night you see him coming for you and on the third night he finds you...Yes it's a bit Candyman in the way the entity is summoned but that's where the similarities end, the pre credit intro lasts more than 20 minutes, which is quite a long time but it is brilliant and sets the scene perfectly
Trailer:
Quotes: James Lasombra: You're not telling me anything. Garrett: I am telling you. You're just not listening.

October 6th: Insidious (2010)
IMDB Rating: 6.8
Premise: A gripping story of a family in search of help for their son, Dalton, who fell into a coma after a mysterious incident in the attic. Little do they know that there is much more to this endless sleep than meets the eye as they explore the paranormal and rediscover the past; the key to getting their son back once and for all.
Razzle's Review: Considered one of the better modern horror flick, it has spawned a couple of sequels which I will watch next, the story is easy to follow, malevolent creatures from the spirit realm called The Further take advantage of a child with special gifts falling into a coma, the longer he is in the coma the easier he will be to possess, that's really where the story starts, it's a race against time to bring him back. There are plenty of jump scares and some pretty nice protagonists, solid horror film
Trailer:
Quotes: Elise Reiner: "It's not the house that is haunted. It's your son"

October 7th: Freaky (2020)
IMDB Rating: 6.3
Premise: Seventeen-year-old Millie Kessler spends her days trying to survive high school and the cruel actions of the popular crowd. But when she becomes the latest target of the Butcher, the town's infamous serial killer, her senior year becomes the least of her worries. When the Butcher's mystical dagger causes him and Millie to magically switch bodies, the frightened teen learns she has just under 24 hours to get her identity back before she looks like a middle-aged maniac forever.
Razzle's Review: The horror movie version of Freaky Friday, made by my favourite production company Blumhouse whose films include Insidious 1, 2, 3, 4. The Purge 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 Dark Skies, Ouija 1, 2, Unfriended, Split, Get Out, Happy Death Day, Truth or Dare, Halloween, Halloween Kills, Halloween Ends, Glass, Happy Death Day 2U, Us, Ma, Black Christmas, Fantasy Island, The Invisible Man, The Hunt, You Should Have Left, The Craft: Legacy, The Black Phone and Freaky. They have pretty much produced all of the decent small budget horror films of the last decade and this was no exception. This is a body-swapping comedy combined with a classic horror slasher like Halloween or Friday the 13th so plenty of gory kills but plenty of funny moments too, it is pretty hard to get the comedy element right in a slasher and make the film fun rather than cheesy but this was super fun
Trailer:
Quotes: [running away from Millie in the body of the Blissfield Butcher]
Josh: "You're black! I'm gay! We are so dead!"

October 8th: Come Play (2020)
IMDB Rating: 5.7
Premise: Oliver is a lonely young boy who feels different from everyone else. Desperate for a friend, he seeks solace and refuge in his ever-present cell phone and tablet. When a mysterious creature uses Oliver's devices against him to break into our world, Oliver's parents must fight to save their son from the monster beyond the screen.
Razzle's Review: Come Play is a spooky story of a lonely autistic boy who is targeted by a creature from another dimension through his mobile phone and tablet. It has shades of The Babadook about it for sure and there are also very real situations where lonely kids get contacted by "monsters" through their phones claiming to want to be their friends that only intend harm, I got a whole double meaning vibe from that. There is also a strong mother's unconditional love angle too, another one I really enjoyed, oh and Larry the monster reminded me of the protagonist from early internet video series called Salad Fingers ha
Trailer:
Quotes: Larry The Monster "I just wan't to be your friend"

October 9th: Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013)
IMDB Rating: 6.5
Premise: The Lamberts believe that they have defeated the spirits that have haunted their family, but they soon discover that evil is not beaten so easily.
Razzle's Review: The second chapter of the Insidious franchise picks up directly after the events of its predecessor, not as good as the first film in my opinion but getting to know the backstory of the woman in the black wedding dress was truly disturbing. There are flashbacks to the past that add clarity to events from the first film which is good but this second instalment is much less focused than the first, with more characters and people breaking into groups and separate storylines to go with them, jumping from storyline to storyline in different timelines, past, present and future which for me felt a bit messy
Trailer:
Quotes: Young Elise Rainier: "In my line of work things tend to happen when it gets dark."

October 10th: Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)
IMDB Rating: 6.1
Premise: A prequel set before the haunting of the Lambert family that reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.
Razzle's Review: My favourite of the 3 Insidious films so far, I thought the casting of the young girl that gets haunted was brilliant, the back story of psychic Elise Rainier and her relationship with the Black Bride that kills her in the first film is well plotted and so is the side story of her meeting her "team" of ghost hunters. For me it's the most interesting of the 3 films by far although it does repeat the same tried and tested formula so it might not be for some but with it being a prequel it also stands alone by itself as a film, you can just watch it without seeing the 2nd movie or even the 1st but there are some references to the first movie you might not get if you sip that one
Trailer:
Quotes: Elise Rainier: [to Bride in Black] Come on, b****!

October 11th: Scream 2 (1997)
IMDB Rating: 6.3
Premise: Two years after the events of Scream, Sidney Prescott and Randy are attending Windsor college. They are trying to get on with their lives...Until a new Ghostface killing spree begins. With the help of Dewey and Gale, Sidney must find out who's behind the murders. As the body count goes up, the list of suspects goes down. Razzle's Review: Having watched the new Scream movie and the original fairly recently it occurred to me I can't remember what happened in 2,3 or 4, or if i even watched them, this one is 25 years old now so I gave it a watch. Classic slasher horror, no huge deviation from the formula of the first movie, not as good as the original and points get docked for the killer running around like a 22 year old gym bunny, overpowering everyone, out running them and leaping around like Jonathan Edwards but turns out to be... {Spoiler} a 60 year old granny lol, ok like usual there were 2 killers but it's not very believable all the victims bumped into the same Ghostface, especially as there were scenes involving running away from one and bumping into the other Trailer:
Quotes:Phone Voice: "What's your favorite scary movie?"
Randy: "Showgirls. Absolutely frightening. What's yours?" Razzle's Spooky Rating: 7.0/10

October 12th: Scream 3 (2000)
IMDB Rating: 5.6
Premise: While Sidney and her friends visit the Hollywood set of Stab 3, the third film based on the Woodsboro murders, another Ghostface killer rises to terrorize them.
Razzle's Review: I could not remember this one at all, either I never watched it at the time or it was so forgettable i've wiped every second of this one from my memory...and well that's not impossible because this one is pretty forgettable. It started to become a parody of itself at this point, the victims were dumber, the killers were more super human, the killer's reason for doing it even stupider. Dont reccomend
Trailer:
Quotes: Milton: Did Cotton's death have anything to do with this movie?
Detective Wallace: He was making a movie called Stab... he was stabbed.

October 13th: Scream 4 (2011)
IMDB Rating: 6.2
Premise: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with Sheriff Dewey and Gale, who are now married, as well as her cousin Jill and her Aunt Kate. Unfortunately, Sidney's appearance also brings about the return of Ghostface, putting Sidney, Gale, and Dewey, along with Jill, her friends, and the whole town of Woodsboro in danger.
Razzle's Review: Last film directed by Wes Craven before he died, firstly I was pleasantly surprised by this one having really disliked Scream 3, I actually enjoyed Scream 4, released 10 years after the third film and in that time they came up with a decent plot along with some very good casting most notably Hayden Panettiere (Heroes).
Trailer:
Quotes: Sidney Prescott: "You forgot the first rule of remakes, Jill. Don't f*** with the original!"
