October 14th: The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
IMDB Rating: 5.6
Premise: A teenage girl, who accidentally releases an ancient and mischievous spirit on Halloween which causes decorations to come alive and wreak havoc, must team up with the last person she'd want to in order to save their town...her dad
Razzle's Review: Ok, I loved this one, not many reviews yet and it only came out 2 days ago so the IMDB rating could change wildly. Basically it is a fun Netflix original Halloween film with great special effects, a good Goosebumps style story that's fun for all the family, starring Marlon Wayans (Scary Movie), Priah Ferguson (Stranger Things), Kelly Rowland (Destinys Child). The casting is fantastic, loved the story too, with just the right amount of dad jokes and mild peril to make this one for all the family
Trailer:
Quotes: Howard "Syd, they are just actors"
*killer clown from outer space grabs Howard*
"I don't think your allowed to touch me unless I sign a waver"
*killer clown from outer space tries to kill Howard*
Howard "THEY ARE NOT CTORS, I REPEAT THE CLOWS ARE NOT ACTORS"

October 15th: The Purge (2013)
IMDB Rating: 5.7
Premise: In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide.
Razzle's Review: Another modern-day horror classic, so much so the vernacular of purging someone has since become used in reference to this film, it spawned 4 films and a TV series and there hasn't been a Halloween since without a purge inspired mask. The concept was pretty unique, one day of the year all crime is legal, the theory being A) most people will then be good for the other 364 days of the year, B) the biggest victims of crime are the poor so the less of them the better economically and C) The criminals will come across each other during the purge and purge each other. Let's hope Truss and the UK government doesn't use this as a handbook on how to improve the economy! As for the story, family helps a guy they shouldn't, bouji neighbours who have no real problems decide to join in on the fun, sh*t gets real.
Trailer:
Quotes: Mary Sandin: We are gonna play the rest of this night out in motherf***ing peace. Does anyone have a problem with that?

October 16th: The Purge: Anarchy (2014)
IMDB Rating: 6.4
Premise: A couple are driving home when their car breaks down just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles
Razzle's Review: Usually the sequel to films like this feel like either a cash grab or they go over the same story again but this one feel like it was written as a 2-part story, Purge 1 sets the scene, USA in full dystopian tyrannical mode, the people oppressed, Purge 2, the people start to fight back and rise up, good people have had enough of being the victims, which makes for a powerful film, think Hunger Games in that regard. Purge 2 doesn't cover the same old ground, it introduces factions, an uprising, people helping each other instead of killing each other. It's totally believable that a county with radical (warring at least verbally) sections of the population such as red necks, the Christian right, the super wealthy, the downtrodden ethnic/poor community all bound together by rabid nationalism and corporate greed where money can buy you absolutely anything end up here when a country is so consumed by a gun culture
Trailer:
Quotes: Carmelo Johns: f**k the New Founding Fathers!
[fires gun upwards]
Carmelo Johns: f**k You! f**k your money! And motherf*ck the Purge!

October 17th: The Purge: Election Year (2016)
IMDB Rating: 6.0
Premise: It's been two years since Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo) stopped himself from a regrettable act of revenge on Purge Night. Now serving as head of security for Senator Charlie Roan (Elizabeth Mitchell), his mission is to protect her in a run for president and survive the annual ritual that targets the poor and innocent. But when a betrayal forces them onto the streets of D.C. on the one night when no help is available, they must stay alive until dawn...or both be sacrificed for their sins against the state.
Razzle's Review: Another purge night, another Purge film, that's the beauty of the concept, every film is set on a different purge night so there is always story development, this time we see a credible opposition rise up and promise to end the purge if they get elected and of course becomes a target come purge night due to a rule change that now allows high elected officials to be purged too. The result, a pretty decent purge film, lots of rich powerful corrupt people die, the poor rise up, team up, put an end to the madness.
Trailer:
Quotes: Joe Dixon: "Boy, there's a whole bunch of Negros comin' right this way. And we sitting up here like a bucket of motherf*cking chicken."

October 18th: The Forever Purge (2021)
IMDB Rating: 5.4
Premise: The rules are all broken as the annual Purge continues even after the holiday ends. A group of survivors in Texas must find a way to get across the Mexican border and makes it out alive while the whole country around them springs into complete chaos. Razzle's Review: The premise is good; people refuse to stop purging on mass after the purge ends, it has become an American right to kill and because that is going to be taken away people just aren't having it. However, it could've been a better story, the bad guys didn't feel right, you would expect the red neck gun toting, it's my right as a MERICAN to purge, it's in the constitution! But instead, it was mostly immigrants trying to kill anyone slightly better off, it made no sense really, there was no real characters to root for either like in the other 3, so a slight miss for me this one Trailer:Quotes:Lead Merc: "You rich can hide behind your steel walls, no more! Powerless, how's that feel? It's the *real* purge! THE FOREVER PURGE!"Razzle's Spooky Rating: 6.0/10

October 19th: The Conjuring (2013)
IMDB Rating: 7.5
Premise: In 1971, Carolyn and Roger Perron move their family into a dilapidated Rhode Island farmhouse and soon strange things start happening around it with escalating nightmarish terror. In desperation, Carolyn contacts the noted paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to examine the house. What the Warrens discover is a whole area steeped in a satanic haunting that is now targeting the Perron family wherever they go. To stop this evil, the Warrens will have to call upon all their skills and spiritual strength to defeat this spectral menace at its source that threatens to destroy everyone involved.
Razzle's Review: I have seen this one before when it came out and remember enjoying it but after watching so many similar films in the decade since including the spin off to this Annabelle, it really doesn't hold up very well, i enjoyed the others more (other than Insidious: Chapter 2), this one has its moments though. I loved that it takes place in the 1970's, I agree completely with director James Wan's that it's almost impossible to make a great horror film set in the present. Great cast and some nice jump scenes along with a building sense of peril
Trailer:
Quotes: Ed Warren: "The devil exists. God exists. And for us, as people, our very destiny hinges upon which one we elect to follow."

October 20th: The Conjuring 2 (2016)
IMDB Rating: 7.3
Premise: In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to London, England, where single mother Peggy Hodgson believes that something evil is in her home. When Peggy's youngest daughter starts showing signs of demonic possession, Ed and Lorraine attempt to help the besieged girl, only to find themselves targeted by the malicious spirits.
Razzle's Review: Set 6 years after the original film, this time the American paranormal investigating husband and wife due end up in London to investigate quite a unique case. I don't know if it was because it was set in England or what but the backdrop of a rather bleak 1970's London added an extra dimension to the film, that and it was young kids being haunted and possessed, always a creepy combination. Bit of a slow burner, but think I enjoyed this a bit more than the first one, both pretty good films though.
Trailer:
Quotes: Bill Wilkins: "I like to hear them scream."

October 21st: The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
IMDB Rating: 6.3
Premise: A chilling story of terror, murder and unknown evil that shocked even experienced real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. One of the most sensational cases from their files, it starts with a fight for the soul of a young boy, then takes them beyond anything they'd ever seen before, to mark the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence
Razzle's Review: Again, loosely based on a true story or at least the fact that this was the first time in U.S. history that a murder suspect would claim demonic possession as a defence. The least scary of the Conjuring movies, it had its moments but none of the entities were as scary as The Nun or Annabelle from previous chapters. It certainly could've done with James Wan directing this one, he has quite the portfolio of decent horror films to his name (Saw, Insidious 1 and 2, The Conjuring 1 and 2, Malignant etc), something was missing, maybe it was his absence
Trailer:
Quotes: Arne Cheyenne Johnson: "Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you are scared but you hang in there."

October 22nd: Halloween H20 (1998)
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Premise: Twenty years after Michael Myers' massacre in Haddonfield, Laurie Strode faked her own death, travelled to California, and took on the identity Keri Tate. Michael discovers Laurie's new identity and travels to California to kill his sister. Laurie must now take on her brother with her son's life at stake
Razzle's Review: The film disregards Parts 4-6 as if they didn't happen, which isn't a bad thing as the franchise went quickly downhill by the 4th film. What annoys me though, this isn't a bad film, Michael Myers mask is a little lame but the film as a whole is one of the better Halloween films, branded as the final chapter, *spoiler alert* which ended with a full blown decapitation of the bad guys head, what annoys me is they then ignore this film and make another one 4 years later where Michael Myers finally gets to kill Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), and he gets to karate-fight Busta Rhymes. Honest I'm not making that up, only for Laurie Strode to be alive in the next film, 16 years later in 2018, for this I cant really give it more than a 5 but if it was the final final film, probably would've been a good and satisfying ending but as it wasn't the end the best part of the film is made irrelevant
Trailer:
Quotes: Norma Watson: Oh. Miss Tate. I didn't mean to make you jump. It's Halloween. I guess everyone's entitled to one good scare.
Laurie Strode: I've had my share.

October 23rd: Old People (2022)
IMDB Rating: 5.0
Premise: A woman travels home with her two kids for her sister's wedding but finds herself defending her family against blood-seeking pensioners.
Razzle's Review: Old people are creepy anyway, they shuffle about like zombies, not usually very lucid and act more on impulse, they are just the other side of the line between life and death so maybe an idea to explore for a horror film? Night of the Living Old People! So did the film work? No, the plot was terrible, there was no supernatural force or virus giving these frail old people who can't even get to the bathroom without assistance some kind of supernatural strength, yet we are meant to believe these feeble old people supposedly abandoned and unable to leave the nursing home unassisted suddenly rise up to murder everyone...BUT if they are strong enough to attack and terrorize everyone why are they in the nursing home to begin with! it makes no sense. The rise up and attack because they felt abandoned, but they are perfectly capable of murdering everyone, running, jumping, climbing, being stronger than average people lol, maybe use that energy to erm make the effort to erm not to self-exile yourself, I would say more but i fell asleep for 20 minutes in the middle lol
Trailer:

October 24th: Victor Crowley (2017)
IMDB Rating: 5.5
Premise: Ten years after the events of the original movie, Victor Crowley is mistakenly resurrected and proceeds to kill once more.
Razzle's Review: This was fun, it never tried to be too serious, low budget movie, they never even tried to make the kills look realistic, blood squirting everywhere, very Evil Dead in that way. Victor Crowley is played by Kane Hodder, he played Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th VII: The New Blood (1988) to Jason X (2001). One minor role i did laugh at is Q from Impractical Jokers is one of the characters in the plane crash scenes, he actually has a fairly substantial role playing pretty much himself lol
Trailer:
Quotes: Sabrina: Ten years later, you are like the O.J. Simpson of Honey Island Swamp. Wouldn't you say?
Andrew: Uh. No, I wouldn't.

October 25th: X (2022)
IMDB Rating: 6.6
Premise: Set in 1979, adult movie actors and a small film crew arrive to a farmhouse occupied by an elderly couple in the desolate Texas countryside to film an adult movie. As the day shifts to night, the visitors slowly realize that they are not safe, and are being targeted by a nearby enemy.
Razzle's Review: This one has echos of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and has subtle nods to other 70s horror films throughout, to start with the cinematography was excellent, it was like watching a 70s film, in the best possible way, sometimes films are meant to be set in the past but still look like they were filmed yesterday, not this one. It is a relatively bizarre movie though and does have the odd flash of boob, tastefully enough done through and the trailer is safe for work ha.
Trailer:
Quotes: [last lines] "Sheriff Dentler: Must be one goddamn f***ed up horror picture."

October 26th: Thinner (1996)
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Premise: A fat Lawyer finds himself growing "Thinner" when an old gypsy man places a hex on him. Now the lawyer must call upon his friends in organized crime to help him persuade the gypsy to lift the curse. Time is running out for the desperate lawyer as he draws closer to his own death, and grows ever thinner.
Razzle's Review: This one is an adaptation of a Stephen King novel written under his Richard Bachman pseudonym. The special effects and make-up seem state-of-art for 1996 and the entire film has a dark sense of humour, not classic Stephen King adaptation but is closer to the good end. The ending was a bit open for interpretation and leaves you thinking, well what happened next but that isn't always a bad thing. I really enjoyed this one despite its rather stingy IMDB rating but I think it might be being held to a higher standard with it being a King adaptation because it was thoroughly enjoyable
Trailer:
Quotes: Billy Halleck: What are you trying to do to me?
Heidi Halleck: What you wanted me to do in the back seat of your daddy's car. Prove my love to you.

October 27th: 31 (2016)
IMDB Rating: 5.1
Premise: Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, hellish compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns.
Razzle's Review: I usually like Rob Zombie films, he usually gives you what you want as a horror fan, plenty of gore and an interesting plot, but here we get basically a rather uninspired horror version of "The Running Man" but with a psychopathic Nazi-midget and a violent tall guy in a tutu. Things get pretty repetitive pretty quick, and the lighting is awful, too dark or too much flashing, not a great take on the deadly game-show theme
Trailer:

October 28th: Look Away (2018)
IMDB Rating: 5.8
Premise: Maria, a lonely 18-year-old high school student, opens up to her reflection because of the lack of support she has from family and her peers. She switches place with her supportive, but evil, twin that she discovers in the mirror's reflection, but the newfound freedom unleashes suppressed feelings
Razzle's Review: This one explores the darker side of teenage anger, the main character is a girl with self-esteem issues, user friends, parents that don't really care, bullies and boys, she decides to swap places with her reflection in the mirror who is everything she isn't, bold, confident, cruel, manipulative and violent, a version of her who will fight back and put up with no sh*t, I thought it was a good film, let's just say things quickly turn dark once the girl in the mirror takes over Trailer:
Quotes: Airam: I remember all of those things. All of those things that you choose to forget...
Maria: No, no...
Airam: But I won't let you forget, Maria, because that's what real friends do. They share their pain. And you have so much inside of you.

October 29th: The Cleanse (2016)
IMDB Rating: 5.1
Premise: A heartbroken man attends a spiritual retreat to cleanse himself and fix his broken life. There he meets a fellow lost soul, and together they discover that "the cleanse" releases more than everyday toxins...a lot more
Razzle's Review: A down-on-his-luck nice guy who hasn't recovered emotionally from being dumped at the altar by his fiancé signs up for a detox/retreat. I like the storyline; the detox makes you expel the monster that lives inside us, some people chose to hang onto the toxic part of themself and pay for the consequences. Very light this one, not really an outright horror, most of the focus of the film is fantasy/comedy but there is death, blood and goblin things and a pretty neat ending. Oh and this one stars Johnny Galecki from Big Bang Theory
Trailer:

IMDB Rating: 5.5
Premise: A man crash lands in rural Appalachia and awakens in the attic of a traditional Hoodoo practitioner. He desperately tries to break free from her dark magic and save his family from a sinister ritual before the rise of the blood moon.
Razzle's Review: Running a bit low now so gave this one a go, not a bad one, pretty much just a modern-day version of Misery with an injured man, in a remote cabin being looked after by a weird old lady that claims she can nurse him back to health. The scene with the heavy-duty nail and oozing pus made my stomach churn though ha.

Quotes: Young Man at Gas Station: Slavery is over, pump your own damn gas
