I will defend no. 3. It was an under (not wonder) dog story; Renato had been a New Faces runner-up, which meant he didn't get a deal in the seventies.
And co-songwriter John Edward had missed his chance of fame back in the sixties. He was in The Manish Boys with a young David Jones.
Edward remembered Renato from his New Faces performance, and had written a p*ss-take of "Save Your Kisses For Me" that he wanted to release, so tracked him down and teamed him up with Hilary Lester, whom Edward had already signed for his label, Hollywood Records, which he ran with his co-songwriter wife. Hollywood may be the smallest label ever to have a number 1; it was basically a pretext for the Edwards to release their songs, recorded by acts that had no other labels interested in them.
And I don't think anyone ever enjoyed being a (near) one hit wonder as much as Renato. Maybe Carl Douglas. If you went to his restaurant in Tamworth, he sometimes waited on the tables, and, if you were really lucky, he wouldn't sing you his big hit.
But as a song it's exactly what it's meant to be; a bit of sentimental retro balladry aimed at a non-single buying audience. Its chart success is one of those freaks that used to happen on a fairly regular basis but which won't now because of the Official Charts Company's genius moves to make the charts more diverse.
Charlene's song though sucks donkey balls.

Wasn't actually acting - Michael Thoma had genuinely been an acting teacher and was genuinely terminally ill. This was the cast farewell, which the series' executive producer asked to have written into the show. Note that they got all the extras in for that scene. How to make me feel guilty I am deliberately not checking facts and trying to go by my memory. will amend It was kind of for the show. The exec producer knew Thoma was dying so got the scriptwriters to write an episode in which his character was being made redundant. That was the pretext for getting everyone in to do the farewell song.

My issue with "Save Your Love" is it only has one tune, repeated endlessly. You can get away with that if it has big lyrics that tell a story, but this song doesn't.
"I've Never Been To Me" dates back to around 1974 I think, and it was on the Motown label although Charlene was a white artist, and Teena Marie had meanwhile had a top 10 hit on that label too, partly because of Rick James.

"Seven Tears" isn't that terrible although they're a one-hit wonder in the UK but "Son Of Jamaica" was worldwide (or especially in Europe) a far bigger hit for them, and also a song I prefer.
By 1982 I'd lost interest really in Eurovision. "A Little Peace" is ok for Eurovision, that's all. I didn't watch the contest, and "One Step Further" was also just ok. Israel probably should have won that year though, and Germany in 1979 - a fair swap.
It appears that apart from a few weeks when Madness then Adam Ant got to #1, the run of UK #1s wasn't that good around that time.
On the whole though, 1982 didn't have anything nearly as terrible as 1981 did.

Bardo - One Step Further (United Kingdom) 4. Duskeys - Here Today, Gone Tomorrow (Ireland) 5. Jahn Teigen and Anita Skorgan - Adieu (Norway) 6. Svetlana - Cours Apres Le Temps (Luxembourg) 7. Arlette Zola - Amour On T'aime (Switzerland) 8. Chips - Dag Efter Dag (Sweden) 9. Brixx - Video, Video (Denmark) 10. Bill van Dijk - Jij En Ik (Netherlands) 11. Lucia - El (Spain) 12. Anna Vissi - Mono I Agapi (Cyprus) 13. Aska - Halo, Halo (Yugoslavia) 14. Stella - Si Tu Aimes Ma Musique (Belgium) 15. Doce - Bem Bom (Portugal) 16. Kojo - Nuku Pommiin (Finland) 17. Neco - Hani? (Turkey) 18. Avi Toledano - Hora (Israel) Israel entries were really bad in 70s and 80s.

I've never been to me is an absolute classic. I love Seven tears too! To be fair they were both unlucky that I didnt notice 'Orville's Song' charting over Xmas. I have tended not to count Xmas songs so I missed this. I will make up for that in 1983, it will have a second chance.

It is really hard to find more than a dozen bad songs in 1983.

Israel's 1983 entry was by Ofra Haza, one of the few foreign Eurovision entrants who didn't win but went on subsequently to have a UK hit.

I have the 1978 game to setup so no time for 1983 today but Ill give the first 10 just to show you how hard it was to find 50 songs if im including bands like this.
So 1983 starts with these
50 Calling Your Name - Marilyn 49 Twisting By The Pool - Dire Straits 48 (Hey You) The Rock Steady Crew - Rock Steady Crew 47 Hey - Julio Iglesias 46 Read 'Em and Weep - Barry Manilow 45 Many Rivers To Cross - UB40 44 Joanna - Single Version - Kool & The Gang 43 A Mess Of Blues - Edit Version - Status Quo 42 Kissing With Confidence - Will Powers 41 It's Late - Shakin' Stevens
Love/hate song has to be this one

I love Dire Straits but I can't defend 'Twisting By The Pool', always loathed it!

I was expecting Hey You (The Rocksteady Crew) to be in your top 10. Maybe you are picking up more American hits but I'll scream if Air Supply is there, that one is a total classic.
Bobby Brown, Ralph Tresvant and Bell Biv Devoe (or whatever that last lot are called) had a hit in the UK chart that got to number one, and it's terrible. That will be in your top 2, depending on how you rate it against Orville which is what it's intended to be so I'd rate it as worse. Bobby Brown needed to wait until his voice broke as he was quite good later on...

But I am still not loving AirSupply, they did come close to being in again in 1982 but they did have a song I liked in 1982. This one in 1983 is probably their second best single but you have to admit if this band have variety it’s not being reflected on the singles they release. As a fan you will have much more appreciation of them overall.

This is the USA, Sweet Dreams is the slightly off-beat one that shows the nature of what else they could do. Making Love.. was almost Total Eclipse Of The Heart mark 2, and I reckon Jim just thought it suited Russell Hitchcock's vocal range so he recorded it with Air Supply (probably contractually that was the only way he could get him to sing on it).
The album track that is clearly stand-out is this one:
