I don't usually believe in doing things this way round but lets have some fun. This will be purely based on the US & Uk Top 40, nothing underground or obscure. I am still not sure If I will do a whole list for the decade or if I will do a Top 50 for each year, I suspect I will do it as a Top 50, as I did the best of as Top 100 for each year. So anyway coming soon...1980

There is so much over rated music from the 70s and 80s so plenty to chose from

Should be interesting. I'll expect to see a few of my favourites in there😆

What qualifies for a "hit"? Top 10, top 20, top 40?
I guess the bigger a hit it was, the more annoying it is if it's bad. You don't care if something you don't really like scraped in to #39.

I said at the top UK & US top 40 but only well known US hits, no point picking a dodgy country song at #38 But If I just found a terrible punk song that I havent heard since 1980 it will be here even if it was a 1 week number, its not all going to be easy targets. And as I was 9 at the time, it is more likely the really big hits are the ones that still annoy me but I am being as fair as possible for example, No matter how cheesy and annoying it can be, we won't have Kool & The Gang - Celebration for 1980 for example So I shortlist of 89 for 1980, generally its a pretty high standard I can see this dropping as the years go on.

Yes because I believe that the higher it got in the chart, the more annoying it is. And if it got to number one, particularly, if it kept out a song you liked or knocked such a song off the top.
From my retro chart already, "Forever Mine" by the O'Jays reached #28 in the Billboard Chart but it was so awful I couldn't chart it even though it was the first week and I was short of hits. If the Rita Coolidge one I did chart wasn't that good, this was a whole lot worse, and it going on for over 6 minutes (I couldn't find a shorter one) made it worse still. It's a shame, because I like early O'Jays song like Love Train and Backstabbers and even Sing A Happy Song was ok.

Ok we will still make it a top 50 but i will spare the first 10 any comments until they really get bad that far down
50 Lonely Together - Barry Manilow 49 What's In a Kiss? - Gilbert O'Sullivan 48 Women In Uniform - Iron Maiden 47 Lost In Love - Air Supply 46 Feels Like I'm in Love - Kelly Marie 45 Waterfalls - - Paul McCartney 44 Hot Dog - Shakin' Stevens 43 United - Judas Priest 42 Could I Have This Dance - Anne Murray 41 Suddenly (feat. Cliff Richard) - Olivia Newton-John, Cliff Richard
I know some of these will have fans, sorry Neil for #47 but it is their only entry, but they are either just bad songs by that act, too schmaltzy or too cheesy but i do have a love/hate relationship with #46

40 Gotta Pull Myself Together - The Nolans
Where do we start....I did have a crush on The Nolans especially Coleen, yes I know but really. She is still cute in this video. This isn't that bad just its like a girl band version of an early Justin Beiber song or The Osmonds, so sickly..

39 Love Patrol - The Dooleys
This is so nearly good but just fails, its like they are trying to do a Motown song but clicked on every effect on their Casio and drowned out any song. In better hands this might have been listenable.

38 Do That To Me One More Time - Captain & Tennille
This was huge in the US but its way way way too schmaltzy for me. She can sing but that's not enough I'm afraid.

37 Lorraine - Bad Manners
Now I loved ska and I admit Bad Manners have a few good songs but this isn't one of them but they have worse too come. This is just so poor in every way.

36 Don't Make Waves - The Nolans

35 Answering Machine - Rupert Holmes
Now we are spared 'Pina Colada Song' as it's really 1979 and I kind of like it but this is really terrible in every way. I am sorry for bringing this followup single out of obcurity. Lyrics, effects, production, oh those lyrics!!!! He can sing but please stop!!!

34 (Just Like) Starting Over - John Lennon
I only havent included 'Imagine' as its a re-iossue otherwise it would be top 5!! This rocknroll pastiche is just painful and for an artist of John Lennon's calibre it gets special pain being this high on the list. But I have listened to thsi longer than I can bear alraedy.

33 If You're Lookin' for a Way Out - Odyssey
The order of these are a bit off, this probably isnt as bad as the last two but these lists are not an exact science. I dont know what annoys me about this song, think its the chorus I dunno why, its actually a decent song but no...not for me

32 Simon Templer - Splodgenessabounds
Its quite hard to rate novelty records but this is no 'Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps'. Its just really annoying, I get what they are trying to do but its a mess.

31 She's Out of My Life - Michael Jackson
OOh contraversy but really I toyed with making this higher up. It just makes me want to vomit. Possibly his worst song of the 80s!!

About time we had some "Worst Of" threads! I thought about doing one for 2021 but really it would've just consisted of "Higher Power".
