inevitable for most that Queen would be in the list
too high, too low
its agreat track no doubt(!) but is it worthy of all the Top Song accolades you read about in other polls
In my case there are several I prefer
But, well ........... Party on Wayne
cue violent head swaying .... and falsetto passages ..
and more fascinating lyrics for a pop song
"Mama just killed a man, put a gun .... etc"
Inspired
Freddie Mercury - respect.

Beating Volvo - awesome
Simply fantastic recording act
so many class songs - some poignant, some pure pleasure
Thoroughly deserving of a Top 40 place

What can I say about #37
The Everlies
Just the best vocal harmony in the biz
too many great tunes to mention
"Dream" is the track here that earns the slot.
Claudette is good too but not in the same class.
If you heard Cliff on the World Tour in 2002/03 you'd hear him singing Clawrdette ..... very weird.
And Phil Everly has great taste in duet partners too.
Well done the Everlies.

Paul Young is a tremendous performer.
Shame he dropped out of the limelight.
Love of the Common People, Tear Your Playhouse Down, Wonderland, Senza Una Donna. What a legacy.
This is his peak for me.

Cliff's second entry
Massive hit movie spawned several hits and helped Cliff be the biggest box office draw in the UK at the time.
Beating Sean Connery along the way.
Musht be shome mishtake? Nope.
Well you can't get much more upbeat than SH.
Who hasn't hummed along or sang it out loud on family holiday trips by car.
Come on - be honest.
Speaking of the movie - always loved the way it started in black and white - all dreary and miserable like the British weather - and then burst into colour.
All together now ...... "seven days to our holiday ..."

love 'em or loathe 'em
Stock, Aitken and Waterman knew a thing or two about good pop tunes and I would suggest a few people owed more to the trio for their success than their own inherent talent.
That said, Rik Astley has an incredible voice. Ally that to this memorable song and you have .. a major fave.

Did you know:
it's based on the Italian opera Pagliacci, about a clown who must make the audience laugh while he weeps because his wife betrayed him. "Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my surface hid."
I guess everyone at some stage can relate to the story.
Great vocalist Smokey. Loved Being With You as well.

#30 and #29 were tied on 136 points but I split them using my own 'countback' system.

#30 and it's Cliff again
A fabulous track produced by ex-Shadow Bruce Welch and an Alan Tarney composition.
Knocked Sir Bob from the top spot and Geldof allegedly said that he didn't mind 'cos it was Cliff.
Cliff was then replaced by Gary Numan's Cars.
So we had the unique #1 feat
One Webb followed by another atop the singles chart.

Edging out Cliff for #29
(how did I let that happen?)
Another one where superlatives fail me.
1968 and old Satchmo takes #1. No one - that's no one - can sing this song like Armstrong. It's definitive - sorry Cliff.

Another Cliff link
Daddy's Home stucjk at #2 for four weeks behind the Human League's top song.
If you have to lose out for #1 then it's no disgrace to lose to such an ace song.
Great performance by Phil Oakey.
Good video too.
