Just three weeks after the World Championship, the new snooker season gets underway on Monday with qualifying for the Wuxi Classic. it is the first tournament to be played under the new format with all players having to qualify, regardless of ranking. Qualifying for the Australian Open follows later in the week, though this will take place under the old format with the top 16 seeds qualifying automatically.

Mark Selby is the first casualty of the new qualifying format, losing 5-3 to Andrew Pagett today. Tom Ford is the only other top 32 player to lose today.
Meanwhile, Ronnie O'Sullivan has, somewhat predictably, withdrawn.

Reanne Evans has become the first woman to qualify for the main stages of a ranking tournament after coming from 3-0 down to beat Thepchaiyah Un-Nooh in qualifying for the Wuxi Classic.
She'll face Neil Robertson in Wuxi after he beat Mohammed Khairy 5-0, getting a 147 in the process. Despite the number of amateurs making up the numbers for this tournament, only two have qualified so far, with Gareth Greene joining Evans in the last 64.
Ding Junhui narrowly avoided becoming the second big-name casualty, coming from behind to beat Aditya Mehta 5-4.
Other qualifiers so far include Barry Hawkins, Mark Williams, Ricky Walden, Steve Davis, Jimmy White, John Higgins and Graeme Dott. Judd Trump and Mark Allen are in action tonight, while Shaun Murphy and Ali Carter are among those in action tomorrow.
Wuxi organisers will be pleased to know that of the 39 qualifying matches played so far, the seeded player has won in 31 of them.

Nice to see the new season starting already. Still think its crazy taking 64 players to China where most of them will barely cover their costs.

It was on Eurosport last year but Bendigo is just north of Melbourne so it will be 11 hours ahead of us.

Reanne Evans lost in the wildcard round. She was the first female player to qualify for a ranking tournament but I doubt she's the first to win a pro match. Allison Fisher - widely regarded as the best woman to play the game played on the Tour in the early 90s when numbers weren't restricted - never qualified for a tournament, but I expect she would've won a few matches. She ended up quitting snooker and having a successful career playing pool in the US, where she was nicknamed the Duchess of Doom.

Wuxi Classic results:

Semi-finals: Robert Milkins 2-6 Neil Robertson John Higgins 6-2 Matthew Stevens

With Mark Selby failing to qualify, Robertson's win will give him a lead of over 7,000 at the top of the world rankings.
