Yesterday also featured a much-anticipated press conference from Barry Hearn, in which he revealed all living world champions will be invited to take part in qualifying for future World Championships. There will be a change in the format for the qualifiers as well with a flat 128 player draw to decide the 16 qualifiers, rather than the current staggered system. The top 16 after the China Open will qualify automatically. Any spare places in the 144-player line-up will be given to players from "emerging" countries.
Also announced was from next season, the top-up list, which is used if there are fewer than 128 entries in a tournament, will be headed by players chosen for their career achievements in snooker (ie Davis and Hendry, plus White if he loses his place) up to a maximum of 4, with any remaining places going to players from the Q School order of merit, as they did this year. In addition, any players who don't have tour cards who take part in tournaments will earn a ranking through the prize money they earn.
So basically, Hearn has found a compromise that allows the likes of Steve Davis and Stephen Hendry to play in tournaments without denying anyone a tour card and we could even see the likes of Dennis Taylor and Ray Reardon back at the Crucible next year if they decide to have a go at qualifying.

Sounding a bit more like the majors in golf which leave open invitations to past winners for perhaps 25 years after winning. Maybe it's age related in some cases.

Thursday's scores:
Ronnie O'Sullivan 3-5 Joe Perry Mark Selby 5-3 Ali Carter Two tight matches in progress. From memory of the two players I'd expect the Selby-Carter one to be tight. You would have to expect O'Sullivan can overturn that deficit.

You would have to expect O'Sullivan can overturn that deficit. It seems like Selby's game has been similar to his first round match so far. 5-1 up and threatening to run away with it and then pegged back, though in this case it was probably more down to Carter picking up his form rather than Selby suddenly losing his ability to play, like he did against White.

Perry beat Ronnie at uk champs few seasons back on a longer match so I'm not ruling Perry out til he's beaten but I suspect if his form continues we could see Ronnie going home.

Perry played great last night but to stand a chance of beating Ronnie, he'll have to do that in every session. One bad session against Ronnie and you'll lose it 6-2 or 7-1 and then the match is just about gone. Once Ronnie gets his nose in front, he seems to find another level.

Ali Carter won the final two frames of the morning session to stay in touch with Mark Selby in the second round of the World Championship at the Crucible. Carter, twice a runner-up, trailed 5-3 overnight and went further behind at 9-5, but breaks of 51 and 73 saw him reduce the deficit to 9-7. The match will be played to a finish from 19:00 BST on Friday.
