Rain ruins any chance of an England victory in the one-off women's test against South Africa. SA reached 181-5 in their 2nd innings, a lead of 48 but persistent rain meant the match ultimately finished as a draw. It will renew debate on whether women's tests should be played over five days, rather than four. Like other recent series for the women's team, the remainder will be comprised of three ODIs and three T20s with points being awarded to the winner to decide the overall outcome of the series.
There were plenty of highlights for England, such as Nat Sciver's unbeaten 169, Alice Davidson-Richards' debut century and the promising showing from debutant fast bowler Issy Wong.

I forgot to post this after the ODI series against Netherlands. These are the latest standings in the Cricket Super League, which determines which teams qualify automatically for next year's World Cup. The top 7 plus India qualify automatically with the other teams going into the World Cup Qualifier tournament. Each team plays eight other opponents, four at home and four away, in a three-match series, so ultimately all teams will have played 24 matches. 10 points are awarded for a win, 5 for a game with no result. Points deductions are enforced if teams are found guilty of having a slow over rate. 1. England 18-125 2. Bangladesh 18-120 3. Afghanistan 12-100 4. Pakistan 15-90 5. West Indies 21-80 6. India 12-79 7. Australia 12-70 8. Ireland 18-68 ------------------------------------ 9. Sri Lanka 18-62 10. New Zealand 6-60 11. South Africa 13-49 12. Zimbabwe 15-45 13. Netherlands 16-25 England's remaining matches that count towards World Cup qualification will be away to South Africa in February, then away to Bangladesh in March.

An interesting finish in store in the delayed test against India. India were all out for 245 this morning, setting England 378 to win with a day and a half still to go.
England have started well, reaching 80-0.

Another great finish in store tomorrow. Saw the last hour's play live, pity the couldn't have played on a bit longer with both batsmen going well.

Another stunning victory for England with Root and Bairstow obliterating the Indian attack to guide England to a 7-wicket win. It's England's highest ever successful run chase. Bairstow now has four centuries in his last five test innings.

It's absolutely incredible, would be good to see a few people outside 3 batsmen scoring runs as well. And I guess the real test comes when we go overseas next?

It's absolutely incredible, would be good to see a few people outside 3 batsmen scoring runs as well. And I guess the real test comes when we go overseas next? I agree with all of this but it is a great start to a new Management/Captain era.
Plus the manner in which they go about playing the game is hugely entertaining to watch.
Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes have done a remarkable job with this England team.
They made some top-quality Test bowlers look ordinary. A nice change from making their own selves look ordinary a couple of months ago. All Anderson, Stokes’ & Pott’s hard work has been rewarded.
Lifting the burden of captaincy from Joe Root has had the desired and predicted effect. His strokeplay has returned to its former best with perfection. It was wonderful to watch him play so freely. Whilst Johnny Bairstow is in the form of his life playing like Kevin Pietersen on steroids.
All in all a massive change from the Silverwood/Root era of rotating half the team from test to test, and not chasing anything in the fourth innings if more than 2.5 runs an over was needed.
As the Graham Gouldman penned 10cc song went "I Don't Like Cricket. I Love It"

Been too busy to post much in recent weeks so I didn't get around to posting about the T20 World Cup, which England won on Sunday. The tournament had a number of shock results, which shows how much the gap is narrowing in T20 cricket, given how accessible it is for the non-Test nations. 15 of the 16 teams in this World Cup won at least one match. The ICC has already announced the number of teams at the 2024 T20 World Cup will be increased from 16 teams to 20. ROUND 1GROUP A 1. Sri Lanka 4 pts 2. Netherlands 4 --------------------------------- 3. Namibia 2 4. UAE 2 GROUP B 1. Zimbabwe 4 2. Ireland 4 --------------------------------- 3. Scotland 2 4. West Indies 2 Sri Lanka progressed despite losing to Namibia in their opening game. Namibia just needed to beat the UAE in their final group game to qualify, but lost, handing the final Super 12s spot to the Netherlands. In the other group, Scotland an historic win over the West Indies but lost to Ireland and Zimbabwe, meaning both they and the 2-time champions were eliminated. SUPER 12GROUP 1 1. New Zealand 7 2. England 7 ---------------------------------- 3. Australia 7 4. Sri Lanka 4 5. Ireland 3 6. Afghanistan 2 GROUP 2 1. India 8 2. Pakistan 6 ---------------------------------- 3. South Africa 5 4. Netherlands 4 5. Bangladesh 4 6. Zimbabwe 3 England had an inconsistent start to the tournament, beating Afghanistan, then suffering a rain-affected loss to Ireland. Their third game against Australia was a washout, meaning they needed to win their last two to reach the semis. They beat New Zealand comfortably before securing their place with a nervy win over Sri Lanka. In the other group, India progressed as winners, having started with a dramatic win over Pakistan. South Africa looked set to join them, only to produce a choke of epic proportions (even by their own standards), losing to the Netherlands, which meant Pakistan qualified with victory in the winner-takes-all match against Bangladesh. SEMI-FINALS New Zealand 152/4 (20) Pakistan 153/3 (19.1) India 168/6 (20) England 170/0 (16) Pakistan continued New Zealand's tournament jinx by overcoming them in the semis. The other semi saw Jos Buttler and Alex Hales destroy India's bowling to storm to a 10-wicket win. FINAL Pakistan 137/8 (20) England 138/5 (19) England's bowlers did a brilliant job, restricting Pakistan to 137. England had a little wobble during the chase but Ben Stokes' unbeaten 50, combined with Shaheen Afridi having to hobble off injured at a critical time, meant England win the T20 World Cup for the second time - only the second team to do so after the West Indies. They are also the first men's team to hold both the 50 over and 20 over World Cups at the same time. An excellent start for England in their first tournament since Eoin Morgan's retirement. It also caps a brilliant year for coach Matthew Mott, who had led Australia's women to the World Cup at the start of the year.

Saw the semi final win which was just awesome, the final was a different game, but also played very well on a different pitch with different conditions, superb performance!

I just read that the next T20 will be staged in the Caribbean and U.S.
I hope Texas will host some matches.

I have to say listening to the Cricket T20 World Cup via TMS was perfect whilst working from home.
The final was tense but with a great outcome.
I suspect I will adopt a similar habit for most of the Football World Cup matches in the next few weeks.

I just read that the next T20 will be staged in the Caribbean and U.S. I hope Texas will host some matches. The venues are yet to be confirmed but Houston has been identified as a possible location. The only current ICC-certified cricket ground in the US is in Lauderhill, Florida and has hosted some games in the Caribbean Premier League.

The capacity at the Houston venue is just 2,500. I wonder if they would need to expand it before 2024.

Day 1 of England's first test series in Pakistan since 2005 and England are dominating on a flat pitch. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett both hit centuries as England put on 233 for the 1st wicket in less than 36 overs.

A few wickets down but England continuing to pile on the runs. 332-3 at tea with England scoring at more than 6 an over. 500 before the close is a genuine possibility.

To not lose in Pakistan is a start But see what our bowlers do when they have a chance.

England 506-4 at the close, having faced only 75 overs. Absolutely brutal hitting.
Crawley 122 Duckett 107 Pope 108 Brook 101 not out
At that rate, if England had faced the full 90 overs that were supposed to be played, they'd have scored over 600.

England all out for 657 in the end. Pakistan end day 2 on 181-0, albeit scoring at a much slower rate.
