Just to give you all a bit of notice, I’m intending to pass the Retro-Chart baton on (if possible) as we move into the 1990’s. I’ll see out the decade with the 1989 charts and a final 1980s countdown (in early 2022), but if someone is willing and able to take this over from 1990 onwards please feel free to step forward. I’m still intending to post my own charts for the 90s but could do with spending a bit more time on the weekend on my consultancy business. I thoroughly enjoying posting the charts but I struggle to find the time sometimes. Anyway, just bear it in mind. If there are no takers I'll continue hosting through the 90s but if anybody fancies managing the 90s Retro-chart when we get there, just shout up!

Notable absences from our Retro-Chart Top 100 of the year include the following Official Chart toppers: CLIFF RICHARD - MISTLETOE AND WINE - The biggest selling single of 1988, by virtue of a huge level of sales in a five week period. Cliff hasn’t been able to amass enough points to feature on our countdown, falling short at 121st place with 402 points.

KYLIE MINOGUE AND JASON DONOVAN - ESPECIALLY FOR YOU - It’s a similar story for the fourth biggest selling single of 1988. Kylie and Jason are 145th on our countdown with 354 points.

GLENN MEDEIROS - NOTHING'S GONNA CHANGE MY LOVE FOR YOU - A four week Official chart-topper in July, it could only climb to number nine on the Retro-Chart , falling short on our countdown at 113th place with 417 points.

WET WET WET - WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS - The Wets got off to a flying start on the Retro-Chart in 1987 with three consecutive Top Ten singles. 1988 hasn’t quite lived up to expectations, with just two singles released this year, and Temptation and With A Little Help From My Friends both peaking at a disappointing number 19.

ROBIN BECK - FIRST TIME - Another big number one on the Official Chart, First Time could only reach number 11 on the Retro-Chart with 374 points in total.

BROS - I OWE YOU NOTHING - We really haven’t taken to Bros on the Retro-Chart, have we? Their debut hit When Will I Be Famous could only reach number 11, however their only Official number one, I Owe You Nothing, could only get to number 12 and with 287 points it limps to 176th on the list.

I'll start the countdown properly tomorrow with a listing of all of our chart-toppers and kick off the Top 100 countdown.
I won't give anything away but.......you'll never guess what our number one song of the year ended up as being! Totally unexpected...!

Ooh, intriguing! I wonder what it could be.... I'm looking forward to this as 1988 is one of my favourite years for chart music.

Great fun.
Always look forward to this - usually quite surprised at some of the songs which make my own top 50 - go figure.

Generally a good list of songs to exclude from the countdown, although I did chart Robin Beck. Thanks for your hard work every week Kingpin, I hope you find someone to take over, but if not, I hope you are able to carry it on, you give great stats!

Much as I like Cliff Mistletoe is not a favourite of mine. On Christmas day I was streaming on twitch (with the title "I'm streaming of a white christmas") with my Christmas song playlist in the background and when that song came up I just started singing along to it.
It reached #4 in my chart, but by the first week proper of 1989 it has already left the chart, falling 4 to 11 then out (of a top 30)

Yeah, no worries I'll keep it going through the 90s if there are no takers. I don't have the same love for the 90s as i do for the 80s, I was a workaholic in that decade (and still am) and didn't really have that much time for the charts anymore. I suppose at least there'll be some great discoveries....the Britpop years may be a bit barren for me, or maybe I'll appreciate it with more maturity!!
