I think another song with Sex in the title that got to #1 in the UK chart is likely to show up.
I actually went to see the Joseph musical and Jason Donovan was playing Joseph. He doesn't do a lot of singing, the "narrator", who was played by Linzi Hateley does quite a lot more. The other brothers are clearly more dancers than singers but also do some singing.
It wasn't a bad casting and I think Andrew Lloyd Webber would not have agreed if he were really that bad, as it's surely a project he took more seriously than that Timmy Mallett single the previous year or the Tetris hit of the following year. (He liked to have a bit of fun on the pop charts). And at least Jason Donovan could definitely act.

The results: A | Luton vs Brentford | A | Sheff Utd vs Burnley | H | Cardiff vs Southampton | H | Stoke vs Plymouth | D | Watford vs Hull | A | Carlisle vs Wycombe | A | Cheltenham vs Lincoln | A | Leyton Orient vs Fleetwood | A | Harrogate vs MK Dons | D | Sutton vs Crawley |
The scores this week: Monthly scores for April (with 1 weekend to go) Season so far (with 4 weeks to go) My poor score sees raliverpool pull further ahead at the top (as well as Shireblogger close the gap on me). smokeyb's big score this week sees him pull away from the bottom of the table, with a realistic chance of catching the two immediately above to get a safe mid-table finish.

No change in the top 3 with XTC climbing back up to #4 after falling last week.
We had the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert at Wembley just recently and Extreme were among the performers and their contribution "Love Of My Life" is on the B-side of "Song For Love" but the A-side is a total anthem. I did mention they were going to have a massive hit in my chart and it isn't "More THan Words".
Entering next after that, a classic ballad by Metallica that has major crossover appeal and surely will be a big hit in the combi-chart.
Ugly Kid Joe's song "Everything About You" was from the Wayne's World soundtrack.
"Temple Of Love" was an old song by Sisters Of Mercy but this is a brand new version and features guest vocals from Ofra Haza.
And completely a great week for rock entries, the Black Crowes biggest UK hit "Remedy" is the 5th highest entry.
"Thrill Me" and "In The Closet" were further releases from Stars and Dangerous respectively, helping those remain big-selling albums. The former was the biggest selling album in 1992 as well as in 1991. The latter contained a "mystery girl" who turned out to be Grace Kelly's daughter Princess Stephanie. Michael Jackson had the bigger hit singles of the two, but of course Simply Red sold more albums. Between those is an entry by Kim Wilde which sounds more like a Belinda Carlisle song.
"We thought of doing it this way first..." I rejected KWS's cover of KC & The Sunshine Band's "Please Don't Go" and this week entered Double You's version. I did consider adding "Gameboy" to the playlist but when it wasn't on Spotify I didn't bother.

Abba will top my chart a total of 5 times, the next will be fairly soon with "Ring Ring" (the later version with the saxophones). They will then have two NM #1s in a row with "Money Money Money" and "Knowing Me Knowing You" and their final NM #1 will be "Super Trouper" in 1980. They will peak at #2 and #3 a few times along the way, and all their singles which will include "Honey Honey" in addition will get into my top 10 up until near the end of 1979 with "I Have A Dream" being the first one that does not.
The question though is whether "Waterloo" was actually the best song in the 1974 contest

This chart was first compiled at the end of April 2020. That Sparks song is clearly better than Abba. "Band On The Run" has always been one of my favourite Wings songs - maybe I always liked songs with different parts. I'm not that certain now that it ranks among my top Wings songs - certainly I'd now place it below "Live And Let Die". It entered the US top 40 this week (may the 4th be with it).
The 5th highest entry by the Rubettes is what will knock Abba off the top of the UK chart. Some have said we should have entered that as our own entry instead of Olivia Newton John. For this song it's actually just session musicians and a real Rubettes band was formed on the success of it, the one that did Juke Box Jive, We Can Do It and so-on. I prefer Juke Box Jive to this song.
So how about the 3rd and 4th entries - yes they were both Eurovision hits. Both have been around before: Gigliola Cinquetti won the Eurovision in 1964 with "Non Ho L'eta Par Amarti" and that song was released in Italian in the UK but failed to reach my chart. Mouth And MacNeal had an NM (and US) top 10 hit in 1972 with "How Do You Do?" but that song was not in Eurovision (as far as I know). "I See A Star" was performed in English in Eurovision but "Go.." was actually performed in Italian as "Si" and translated for the English market, and I probably like it more than Abba (it's different so difficult to compare). Definitely not as good as Sparks but nor is Abba. Also, if I'm going to decide whether this song is my favourite Eurovision song I probably need to judge it on the actual version used in Eurovision, i.e. the Italian version. (I saw it on a recent repeat of Top of the Pops and had also seen it before). Even then, I thought it was magnificent. And I'm not even normally a fan of ballads like that.

One of the songs in the round had a cover version single release by another artist. That does not disqualify it, although I did consider banning covers of hit singles (but not originals later covered)

As it stands, 4 of them look quite safe and it's any 2 from the other 6.

Abba number one, but was it even the best song in the contest? We'll have a couple more along. Abba have just timed it better as you'll see what else is charting next week.
In 2020 on Purim (just before lockdown) we had a 1975 theme and I dressed as one of the Bay City Rollers, as that was clearly the "dress" style of the year. They are this week's highest entry with "Shang-A-Lang" in a period a lot of pop was still "fun". And thus the 3rd highest new entry this week by Ray Stevens, which got to #1 in the UK chart but I guess it's going to be snubbed by almost everyone here. Of course he's been having hits for a while, with one of his lesser known songs "Mr Businessman" being his biggest NM hit reaching #5 in 1968. He also got to NM #7 in 1969 with his cover of the Coasters' "Along Came Jones" enhanced by a lot of silly voices playing the parts.
So in between those, a bit of a silly intro by Stevie Wonder to his classic "Don't You Worry 'bout A Thing". This song was covered in 1992 by Incognito so we might see both versions in the different combi charts within this year.

We were in the Premier League more recently than Sheffield Wednesday (relegated in 2000) and Barnsley (relegated in 1998)
I'm sure they'll only enjoy playing against Charlton if they beat us. Hopefully we'll be a force next season.

After 6 weeks of U2 at #1, we have a brand new number one, debuting at the top for Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine (or Carter USM). Let's hope there is a bit more love for them on Haven than there is for the current Wedding Present single.
After reaching #1 in the UK with Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter, Iron Maiden "come close" with their next single, entering at #2. This will of course nosedive down the chart very quickly. They themselves have had an NM #1 with "Can I Play With Madness" 4 years ago.
Julian Lennon (with Saltwater) and Marc Almond (solo, with A Lover Spurned, as well as with Soft Cell on Torch) have both also had NM #1s. None yet though for Kylie Minogue (her biggest hit to date "Better The Devil You Know" peaked at #3)
Here is a video of the #1

I had a bet on Lincoln to reach the playoffs was set to win £450 if they did, and then they drew at Reading and lost at home to Wigan whilst Oxford won both their games by big margins, so I gave up and cashed in the bet for a bit less than I had paid for it.
Then tonight they go and win at Oxford so if I'd just waited I could have cashed it in tomorrow for a bit more than I did.
And if they do get into the playoffs...

During the 2 days the sing-offs, especially if it isn't double-elimination, it doesn't usually take long for people to vote so they have more time to listen to other music to rate (i.e. LingoVision). In addition I have received most of the votes by Sunday so people have Mondays to listen to the other songs.
After the next double-elimination round we'll be down to 7 acts and 3 regular rounds with sing-offs. In addition the next 2 rounds are stretched out due to my inavailability the next 2 Monday nights to do results shows.
