You could do a "duel" from my chart... when Propaganda was kept off the top by "Kayleigh" by Marillion. Or you can stick with the UK and have Kayleigh vs "You'll Never Walk Alone" by the Crowd but I reckon that one will be a landslide possibly a whitewash.

I'm more of a Robbie Williams fan than Kylie but wasn't that keen on Sing When You're Winning, and I preferred U2 more in the 80s and early 90s.
In any case at the time Beautiful Day reached NM #6 and Kids NM #9 and I see no reason to depart from that.
On the week they were both at those positions (4 November 2000) the number one was this song (which isn't on Spotify, for whatever reason)

As the chart stands now "See You" is the only ever NM #1 for Depeche Mode with them having peaked at #2 a number of times. We'll see when we run through the 80s and into 1990 where it merges with the "new" 1990 chart if they ever get to #1 again but I don't think they will. "Enjoy The Silence" is their last #2 and they had a #3 in 2001. So it is good that they have managed to get there at least once.
The glorious "Ain't No Pleasing You" gets the highest entry this week. Otherwise it's not really a classic week for entries - Blue Rondo A La Turk scraped the UK top 40 last year with "Me And Mr Sanchez" which failed to reach the NM chart at all, bubbling just outside. And I remember Klactoveesedstein a lot more than that one, but it failed to reach the UK top 40.
Right near the bottom of this chart is what was the last regular UK top 10 hit for Leo Sayer (i.e. not counting the Meck remake of his earlier hit on which he was co-credited). A ballad picked up from the "Song For Europe 1981" contest written by Andy Hill. That it reached the UK top 10 was a bit of an indication of how this year had fallen, since I mentioned the top 10 was rather strong with most of my favourite songs in the past few weeks getting there and a couple of others lingering just outside. The Classix Nouveaux single was one of those that ended up just outside the top 10 but at least it reached the top 20 with none of their other singles getting even into the top 40. Sal Solo did later get another hit.
Rick Springfield and Tommy Tutone both had top 5 hits in the USA with those songs whilst "New Romantics" Visage took "The Damned Don't Cry" to #11 in the UK singles chart.

Asake - Nigerian Big Piig - London Cat Burns - London Dylan - Suffolk (and the most stupid name for a singer I think I've seen) FLO - London Fred again.. - London Gabriels - USA Nia Archives - London-based piri & tommy - London Rachel Chinouriri - London *** If you replaced the word "London" above with the word "white", you'd say the list was racist. So I do not see why it should be considered any differently because it's London. Every year it is the same. The national broadcaster ignores the nation because f***ing London. Whoever nominated this list is racist, corrupt, or scum. My issue for a long while is that they make a list at all. They should listen to what comes out and then decide what is good and thus to promote, regardless of whether it's on a major label, but with attention to trying to get the best from multiple genres. If they had someone full-time to do that, they could just go around gigs listening to bands, invite bands to send in their music etc. It doesn't need major label releases anymore, everything is released on streaming platforms and can be done on relatively low budgets.

Full rundown of major tournaments where England played France and how they both did.
1966. England 2-0 France. England qualified, France went out as Uruguay got the 2nd qualifying spot. England then went on to win it.
1982. England 3-1 France. England came first with 3 straight wins and got a tough second group of West Germany and Spain. France qualified second after beating Kuwait and drawing with Czechoslovakia, and got a pissingly easy second group with Austria and Northern Ireland. As a result England came 2nd behind West Germany and France played them in the semi-final, should have had a penalty when Schumacher fouled Battiston and Schumacher should also have been sent off. Took a 3-1 lead anyway in extra time but threw it away and West Germany won on penalties. But they got beaten by the Italians in the final.
1992: England 0-0 France. They then both drew their second group game and lost their 3rd in a group with Sweden and Denmark respectively. As a result both were eliminated. Denmark went on to win the competition.
2004: France 2-1 England. After Beckham missed a penalty that could have put England 2-0 up they conceded 2 very late goals. England won both their remaining group games but France won the group and got what seemed to be the easier draw against Greece whilst England got Portugal. England lost on penalties as usual, France lost 1-0 but Greece went on to win it.
2012: England 1-1 France. Both teams qualified from the group but England won the group winning both the remaining games. England had the slightly easier tie against Italy whilst France had to play world champions Spain. France lost in regular time whilst England as usual lost on penalties. Spain went on to win.
2004 and 2012 had the same pattern. England and France both went through, England then lost on penalties to the team that ended runner-up, France in regulation time to the eventual winners.

I think the general time for "idols" is around Spring after Haven Factor finishes and for Lingovision to just squeeze in the middle of it somewhere. The last Rock Idol was 12 rounds but I'm thinking Instrumental Idol will be just 7 or 8 rounds. I'm open for suggestions as to the genres, I have in mind old classical, modern orchestral, twangy guitars, brass or woodwind based jazzy-style, jangly pianos, synth-pop, dance-beat, and slower-paced music that isn't orchestral, and maybe one totally open round where you can play anything you like! So that would be 9 rounds. Dont forget to include a TV Theme round. They are great and so much variety We had one in Pot Pourri but they didn't have to be instrumentals, so I guess that would make it a bit different this time. I could make it TV or film themes.

Yeah, I thought England were bad at penalties until I saw the Japanese, they all looked like they knew they were not going to score! And however good Brazil's goals are, I just find them arrogant, doing a group dance after scoring against South Korea in the last 16, it's not the final! I'd really like Croatia to give them a game to see how they stand up to it, but I think we may have to wait until the semi final for that... Spain even worse. Maybe why we beat them in Euro 1996 that way, which until we beat Colombia in the last world cup was our only penalty shoot-out win.

I'm going to state my preference as Ladbaby. Mariah Carey's good but it isn't 1994.
In my day we had novelty songs and covers around Christmas time. The Flying Pickets with an acapella cover of Yazoo in 1983. Not number one but the Toy Dolls cover of Nellie The Elephant was high in the chart in 1984. It's part of the fun of the Christmas market. And ok, so Reet Petite made a comeback in 1986 but that was one-off. Even 1987's number one was a disco-dance cover of an Elvis Presley classic.
I'm sure my online vegan friend Inanna Snow would hate the Ladbaby concept but I'm also sure many of the new generation got to check out the originals. (Ok, they probably found the Joan Jett version of I Love Rock And Roll but they may have found the Arrows too).
By the way I thought Sausage Rolls For Everyone was going to be a parody of Status Quo's 1981 hit and was disappointed when it wasn't.

I don't know if it's the case or not but I reckon fewer people care about the charts now than they used to in my day.
Not that it's necessarily a bad thing, just that it's a thing of the past.
There are multiple ways to find the music you like and streaming platforms are very good in making music accessible.
29 years ago when Take That and Mr Blobby were battling for Christmas number one, it may have meant a bit more.
30 years ago Whitney Houston was number one at Christmas and a lot of people were saying "hey, that's a Dolly Parton cover" and may have even been comparing the versions, but a normal everyday chart follower probably didn't know Dolly Parton's version, nor did they have any easy way of accessing it to compare. No when Ladbaby does "We built this city on Sausage Rolls" and they tell you it's a cover of Starship, every new generation chart follower who didn't know the original can go and find it.
They may then be told that Starship started their life in the 60s as Jefferson Airplane and go and find "White Rabbit" and "Somebody To Love" too.

Having the same song at number one every year is not a phenomenon new to streaming. Back in the 40s "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby was Christmas number one nearly every year.
Radio stations would play it every year.
The top 50 streamed Christmas number ones is clearly missing Ladbaby, so most people prefer Mariah. That "I Hear You Knocking" and "Mull Of Kintyre" are also missing from the list appears just to be an indication of those songs not standing the test of time. If it's a Christmas-related song, or it's considered a classic, like the Beatles songs or Pink Floyd or the Human League which people listen to all year round, then it's on the list. Even all the Spice Girls ones are there.
Most of the X-Factor winners are there, just Leon Jackson notably missing.

At the time Sinead did better in my chart, #9 compared to #19 of TATU, but I can hardly remember how the Sinead Quinn song goes now, whereas I do remember that TATU song.
It was probably around the time Feeder were #1 in my chart with "Just The Way I'm Feeling", a song I heard on Radio X today.

7 Wet Wet Wet - Goodnight Girl 10 Shakespears Sister - Stay 10 Right Said Fred - Deeply Dippy 3 KWS - Please Don't Go 4 Erasure - Take A Chance On Me 8 Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer 1 Jimmy Nail - Ain't No Doubt 10 Shamen - Ebeneezer Goode 3 Boyz II Men - End Of The Road 9 Tasmin Archer - Sleeping Satellite 8 Charles & Eddie - Would I Lie To You 8 Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You
It seems wrong that they're in order they entered rather than the order in which they reached #1 which would put Jimmy Nail before Snap and Tasmin Archer before Boya II Men. In fact Boyz II Men too so long to get to #1 I'm surprised it didn't enter the chart before the Shamen too.
And yes a nice 10 to Right Said Fred!

Apart from 2 wins against Tunisia, I recall all of England's games against African teams in World Cups since 1986 have finished drawn in normal time, but we also beat Cameroon in extra time.
1986 Morocco 0-0 1990 Cameroon 2-2 after normal time, 3-2 after extra time 1998 Tunisia 2-0 2002 Nigeria 0-0 2010 Algeria 0-0 2018 Tunisia 2-1
Cameroon was the only one we faced in the knockout stage. Morocco in 1986 was the only one to qualify from a group we were in. 3 teams qualified but they were first, we were second.
still we haven't yet lost to an African nation in a World Cup.

If you're only covering the UK chart then "How Much Is That Doggie In The Window" is the only Patti Page song you will encounter. Rather a shame. "Allegheny Moon" was her biggest US hit reaching #2 and reached #2 in my chart too along with a couple of others. Probably best known though for "Old Cape Cod" because Groove Armada sampled it.

I haven't listened to that song but in the area my chart covered David Whitfield was possibly the singer I couldn't stand the most. I declared his song "My Son John" as the worst song I came across during the entirety of my coverage of the last 4 years of the 1950s. Obviously the public at the time agreed with me to some extent as it broken a run of top 10 hits (plus one #12) to peak at #22.
Guy Mitchell managed 2 number ones in my chart, and I did wonder how many more he would have had if I'd started it earlier. And in the 1940-52 book he has even more of them.

bye bye Germany..
Spain vs Morocco is a bit of a "derby" although Spain's main rivals will always be Portugal.
