The Top 10 is a superb line-up of great songs. The only major surprise to me is that Borderline significantly outscored Holiday. They're both terrific, but I would have expected Holiday to be an iconic Top 10er.

I might as well carry this on while I'm in the mood...... 5. LIVE TO TELL (1524 points)
The eagerly anticipated first single from 'True Blue' was this emotional ballad, which has become one of her most popular songs. It reached as high as #2 in the U.K. (was 'Rock Me Amadeus' really more popular than this classic?) and became the first of an incredible five top 5 hits from that album.

4. FROZEN (1537 points)
Maddie's highest placed ballad on this countdown was her 1998 comeback single from 'Ray Of Light', and her first #1 in eight years. It is hauntingly beautiful and easily up there with her best songs... hence it's high position. This and 'Ray Of Light' were always pretty much neck and neck while I was doing the scoring for this chart, but it was this one that broke away in the end.

3. INTO THE GROOVE (1668 points)
Maddie's biggest selling single in the U.K. was this dance fuelled pop track and it finishes at #3 here. Taken from the film 'Desperately Seeking Susan', which was her first major screen role, it became her first #1 and remained there for 4 weeks - at one point having her 1984 hit 'Holiday' one place behind it in the #2 position. Later it was included on a re-issued version of 'LIke A Virgin', making it a total of 5 top 5 hits from that album alone in 1985 - with the 2 tracks from 'Vision Quest' and the re-entry of 'Holiday', that made 8 top 5 hits, and her most successful year on the charts!

2. VOGUE (1848 points)
The top 3 were never in any doubt.. they pretty much remained consistent the whole time during the adding up process. 'Vogue', her 1990 #1 single, finishes in runner-up position but remarkably was never intended to be a single... it was originally written as the B-side of 'Keep It Together' but was deemed too good to not be a single in its own right. Later it was included on the 'I'm Breathless' (part soundtrack to 'Dick Tracy') album - presumably to promote it, as it's like nothing else on there. You could be forgiven for thinking this song was the first to mention the 'Vogue' dance, but that title actually goes to Malcolm McLaren, who recorded a song called 'Deep In Vogue' for his 1989 album 'Waltz Darling' - he took advantage of the fact Madonna had popularised the dance by releasing it as a single while she was still #1 with the song... sadly his wasn't nearly as popular and it peaked at #83. 1. LIKE A PRAYER (2336 points)
Far and away the most popular track by the unrivalled Queen of Pop, this scored more than a quarter of Vogue's points on top of its total score, and it led the whole way through. Strange then that it's only her seventh best selling single in the U.K. (at the last count). When she returned with the song and video in 1989 after taking more than a year off (during which time other female artists like Tiffany, Yazz & Debbie Gibson came and peaked) she caused major controversy by depicting burning crosses and overtly catholic themes on the video which caused offence to some overly sensitive critics. I can see why the song is so iconic of her - although I wouldn't place it far out in front of some of her other classics (or even in front at all, but that's down to my personal preference), but I respect the fact that it is so popular, and that when she dies (hopefully not any time soon) it will probably be her most played track.
