I'm at Mansfield to see if our "new" manager can actually win a home game, while hoping 1 or 2 other teams lose. Chance of it actually happening, 10%? But if it does, happiness levels 200%! At least you (probably!) won't need your abacus, unlike some other teams... Some of us remember the days of goal average and no calculators.

I'm also at Harrogate v Chorley on sunday!
Mansfield 1-0, Coventry 3-4 would lead to a pre-play-off play-off, really?!?

I wonder if the Chesterfield fans will try and cause the match to be abandoned, as I know they aren't happy at the owners, and what can the FL do to them, points deduction, err already down...

National League
Great achievement by Ebbsfleet to make the playoffs under the radar. I don't think until towards the end of the season anyone thought they might do it. Reminds me of last season when IIRC they went unbeaten in 2017 to almost take the title away from Maidenhead from a long way back. Probably makes up for a couple of seasons ago when they threw away the National League south title and then bottled it in the playoffs, and then the season before (2014-15) when mid-season they signed a couple of players from Gillingham, and I think another from Northampton? Yes the Gillingham players were moving locally (and at least 1 of them Danny Kedwell is still there and despite previously playing for AFC Wimbledon is local as certainly whilst at Gillingham he was living not far from there and I think had done for a while) but given that both of them had played for Gillingham in L1 that season I was shocked they were prepared to drop 3 divisions. Anyway they ended up not making the playoffs. Did well to force penalties the other night at Aldershot, away from home and 1-0 down they equalised in the 119th minute. Definitely got lucky in the shootout though, had 2 penalties saved (though they did save one themselves) and Aldershot hit the post twice and the first one would have put them through had it gone in. Hadn't realised that the Aldershot keeper was Lewis Ward, he's on loan from Reading and he had the 2nd attempt that hit the post. Lost 4-2 at Tranmere after-extra-time today with their scorer from the other night getting sent off in the 108th minute, but pretty impressed they made it that close, especially after playing an away tie less than 72 hours ago.
Dover I thought for a long time were absolute certainties to make the playoffs, at one point I thought they might even challenge for the title, but there was a game later in the season, forget when or who against but I think it was against one of the teams at the bottom, when I wondered if they were throwing it away as I couldn't believe they'd lost. Ultimately that turned out to be the crucial point of the season given they narrowly missed out. I do slightly wonder what this means for Chris Kinnear the manager. Consolidated in their first season, and reached the 3rd round of the FA Cup as well, but after losing in the playoffs 2015-16 they've narrowly missed out two seasons running now, although worth mentioning they are not full-time AFAIK.

Stoke are relegated from the Premier League. And West Brom live to fight another day due to virtutally the last kick of the Everton v Southampton match, which has just finished. The Saints were winning 1-0 when Everton equalised via a deflected goal in the 95th minute. A 1-1 draw lifts Southampton out of the bottom 3 and above Swansea on goal difference.
On Tuesday Swansea play Southampton in a must win game for both teams. If either team win then West Brom will be relagated.

The significant results in League One today were:
Gillingham 5-2 Plymouth Rochdale 1-0 Charlton Northampton 2-2 Oldham
The first result, which was 3-1 at half time, meant Charlton would definitely be in the playoffs regardless of their result, so perhaps that is why Lee Bowyer made a couple of changes and obviously it gave Rochdale the chance to go and win it. With the result in the final game that was enough to save Rochdale, and after 21 consecutive seasons in the 3rd tier, Oldham Athletic are relegated.
In the playoffs, Shrewsbury will be playing Charlton and Rotherham will be playing Scunthorpe. If Rotherham win the playoffs then the 3 teams that were relegated last season will all be promoted back.
In 1998, that nearly happened in the Premier League: the 3 clubs that were promoted all went down again and in the other direction Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough both went back up again. Sunderland were in the playoffs but in the final were beaten by Charlton Athletic...
So maybe history will repeat itself this season for Charlton?

Forgot to add yesterday that seeing what Ebbsfleet have done made me wonder whether Maidenhead could have challenged for the playoffs had Dave Tarpey stayed and remained fit. As it is he joined Barnet got a season ending injury pretty much straight away and Barnet have now gone down so he's back where he started with presumably his football league chance gone you can see now why choosing a club that would match both his wages at Maidenhead and his part-time job (Coventry's apparently only covered his football wages) was so important. Nervous about today but I think that's a good thing. I think everytime I haven't been since Paul Clement took over we've been thrashed! Obviously we still might be but it's all about other results.

Ah well, it wasn't to be, we should have won 6-1 with the chances we created, but lax defending, woeful finishing and some great goalkeeping meant we drew 1-1 again, and anyway Lincoln and Coventry didn't slip up. However when our equaliser went in while Lincoln were losing 1-0, well the noise nearly lifted the roof off the West Stand, brilliant! Evans' last game in charge when he let 10 man Coventry draw 1-1 was pivotal I guess, because if we'd won that, we'd now be level with them and in the playoffs based on the matches between the two clubs.

Not sure I needed to say BIB, as we did have it in our own hands still. Expected a defeat but was feeling positive that we'd at least make it competitive, its the Reading way to turn up for an away game with little expectation, especially when its televised! Remember well how we ended Derby's playoff chances by winning 3-0 on the last day in 2015 at Pride Park. Dull game which I think was killed off with Birmingham beating Fulham meaning that Cardiff didn't have to push for a win and a draw suited us too. Never really felt that Cardiff were going to score and I don't think we even had a shot on goal. But great result and a late-ish goal clearance too, brilliant stuff, although it doesn't feel like it as I still feel we were lucky to stay up, and if someone said when Clement arrived 8 points from the final 8 games would have been enough I would have been surprised. Expected it to be at least 10 points required. Without doubt the worst season in the 20 years at the Mad Stad. Clement has done OK in the end, hopefully if that is translated into next season especially with a proper pre-season we should be ok, don't want another season like this one, though at the moment we look a long way short of challenging for the playoffs.

Great to see Harrogate Town win with an injury time goal today, totally deserved, Chorley will moan about the female ref but I thought she got the big decisions spot on. It was a red card, looked a penalty and that's all that matters. Great atmosphere created by the Chorley fans, and Harrogate are onto the final with Brackley next sunday, which sadly I cant make as I'm at the cricket instead.

Congratulations to Slough Town who have won the Evostik Southern Prem playoff final today with a 2-1 win at Kings Lynn Town after an 89th minute winner from super sub Manny Williams who used to play for Maidenhead. From following the updates it seemed a bit harsh on Kings Lynn, but away from home and late winner, a good achievement for Slough On another note Kings Lynn got 100 points and didn't go up. The southern step 3 and 4 leagues can see high points totals for the top teams but that seems unusual?

Any plans for the bank holiday weekend? These teams are chasing glory (or trying to avoid despair)... Saturday 5 - Sunday 6 MayPremier League: Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League if they win at Chelsea on Sunday. If Spurs also win (at WBA, Sat), they will also qualify for the Champions League, meaning Chelsea will be in the Europa League. Burnley's Europa League spot will be confirmed unless they lose and Everton win. West Brom will be relegated: at 2:30pm on Saturday if Stoke win, or at 5pm unless they win and Swansea lose, or at 7:30pm if Southampton win. Stoke will be relegated if they lose, or if they draw and either Southampton win, or Swansea avoid defeat. Even if they win, Stoke will go down if Southampton, Swansea, Huddersfield and West Ham all wi Liverpool lost, ensuring that the race for the Champions League goes to the final day, and Chelsea will have a chance no matter what their midweek result is. Hilariously, Spurs lost too, and other results meant that West Brom's great escape is still on. No such luck for Stoke, who are down after ten years during which they never quite managed to qualify for the Heineken cup - good riddance to them. Meanwhile, Burnley qualified for the Europa League due to Everton's failure to win on Saturday. A tremendous achievement for them. Cardiff return to the Premier League, and Fulham will play Derby in the play-offs. An exciting final five minutes saw Bolton score twice to win 3-2 against Nottm Forest and secure their safety, relegating Barnsley and Burton in the process. In League One, Wigan claimed the title, and Charlton reached the play-offs, despite losing to Rochdale, who leapfrogged Oldham. The Latics exit the third tier after a 21-year spell, and go down with Northampton after the two teams drew on Saturday.

Saturday 5 May (continued)League Two: final day (3pm) Accrington, Luton and Wycombe have the promotion places sewn up, Exeter and Notts County will be in the play-offs, and Chesterfield are down. Again, five other teams don't know which division they'll play in next season: Play-offs: Coventry (74 pts, +17, 64 goals scored; v Morecambe) and Lincoln (74 pts, +16, 63 GS; v Yeovil) are in control, and either side will seal play-off places if they avoid defeat at home to bottom-five teams. If either of them lose, Mansfield (71 pts, +15, 66 GS, v Crawley) will steal a place if they win - unless there's a goal-fest at the Ricoh (e.g. Mansfield 1-0, Coventry 3-4 would lead to a pre-play-off play-off). Relegation: Barnet will be down unless they win and Morecambe lose. Since Barnet are at home to bottom club Chesterfield, I should note that if Barnet win by 7 goals, a draw won't be enough for Morecambe... SPL: Aberdeen will qualify for the Europa League if they win and Rangers lose. Scottish Championship: Dumbarton (2-1 up) will be relegated if they lose their play-off semi final vs Arbroath Scottish League One: Queen's Park (1-1) will be relegated if they lose their play-off semi final vs Stenhousemuir Coventry and Lincoln complete the play-off picture in League Two as both drew - the former's draw with Morecambe meant that Barnet's three-goal win was not enough to save them. Rangers closed the gap on Aberdeen, and the two meet on Tuesday with 2nd place up for grabs. Dumbarton reached their play-off final, but Queen's Park are relegated by their defeat.

Congratulations too to Dulwich Hamlet who have been promoted to Conference South (as I still think of it) despite being thrown out of their ground earlier in the season.

Tuesday 8 - Wednesday 9 May
Premier League: Tue: West Brom will be relegated if Swansea v Southampton does not end in a draw. Wed: Spurs will qualify for the Champions League if they win and Chelsea don't.
Scottish Premiership: Tue: Aberdeen will qualify for the Europa League if they beat Rangers. Ross County will be relegated if they don't win and Partick do. Wed: If Hibs fail to win, this would confirm a Europa League place for Aberdeen (if they draw tomorrow), or Rangers (if Rangers win).

Tuesday 8 - Wednesday 9 MayPremier League: Tue: West Brom will be relegated if Swansea v Southampton does not end in a draw. A win for Southampton will more-or-less guarantee they survive. A defeat or draw will inevitably result in their relegation, as their final match is against Manchester City, whilst Swansea play Stoke at home.

And they've done it! 1-0, so a ten goal swing would be required - and even though Southampton face the champions and Swansea play bottom club Stoke, that seems somewhat unlikely. I wonder which games Sky will pick this weekend, especially if Huddersfield get something against Chelsea tomorrow night. Meanwhile, West Brom are finally relegated. It was the fifth midweek or weekend when they could have gone down, and the seventh time if you count the separate kick-off times last Saturday. Hopefully they'll reward Darren Moore with the job permanently, after the improvement he's made there.
