the beekeeper was not THAT bad, problem was it had too many songs including some that might had been just b-sides in the past but the album still has many great songs among the bad ones you could easily pick up 10 songs and make a great album which sure you can't say about the next 2 albums she did after that, American Doll Posse and Abnormally attracted to Sin, these 2 I really think are bad and there are bareky any decent songs on it... Well it’s biggest disappointment and the quality dive from Scarlet - Beekeeper was huge and genuinely before then Tori could do no wrong. Never forget when I first heard ‘Sleeps with Butterflies’ and thought I would hate this if it was any other artist and it was my favourite. ‘Ribbons undone’ too - ewww! Personally I quite liked a few songs on AATS - ‘Give’, ‘Starling’, ‘Welcone to England’, ‘Fast Horse’, ‘Flavour’ and would put it higher than TBK which I’d rank with ADP as her worst. But it’s all opinion anyhow.

Each to their own of course but of ones mentioned I adore Alanis’s Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie - a brave, clever fascinating record with some great songs. I preferred Radiohead’s Amnesiac to Kid A as it had better tracks - Pyramid Song ( one of the most beautiful life changing tracks ever, I Might Be Wrong, Like Spinning Plates, Life in a Glasshouse.
I’d go for Tori Amos ‘The Beekeeper’ as the most disappointing record ever - before then she could literally do no wrong and it broke my obsession with her too hear her singing bland schmaltzy stuff. She has got somewhat better since. Never been that into Kate Bush’s post comeback work thinking ‘Aerial’ was overrated and a bit twee.

Oh I quite liked Earth song - the melody was strong and I like the fact it’s dramatic and long where the convention is 3-4 mins for a no.1. Different to other no,1s and yes the drug induced messianic complex is interesting.. Compared to Outhere Brothers and Robison and Jerome it was certainly not the worst no. 1 of 1995. Of course knowing about his other side of Jacko puts you off.

Tempted to bet on Rita Ora with those odds after Clean Bandit last year with a regular release at the right time.
Also a big US hip hop record with mega streaming can come out of nowhere.

I know there are loads of merit less covers but for original non-novelty no.1s I HATE. Only going from 2000 onwards
DJ Khaled/Justin Bieber and about 7 rappers - I’m the One Sam Smith - Stay with Me Taio Cruz - Dynamite The Corrs - Breathless Bass hunter - Now You’re Gone Ne-Yo - Closer

And also 1990 Warp dance record to make the top 40. 3 minutes of weird and almost random noises (maybe the 12" made more sense)but most noticeable for a video which did freak me out when it was once played on the Chart Show (I was young mind) featuring naff but sinister facial holograms and a creepy man with an oversized plasticine head doing some dusting, Nightmares on Wax went on to produce the chill out classic Les Nuits and several albums.

I mentioned it earlier with Technohead but worth posting in its own right. Tricky Disco Came out in August 1990 at the same time as the ultra cool bass heavy LFO on the same label Warp. It made no.14 in the charts and I bought it. Don't ever recall hearing it on radio outtde the charts. Bleeping, cutesy high pitched alien and weird chanting and the video is the weirdest thing ever. You'd never get anything as bizarre as this in the charts nowadays sadly.

Awww I really like it - better than Trouble's Lament which I found bland. Like the big organ productio and melody strong. Sounds a bit 80s too.

I know Tori does very varied set lists although she does seem to perform 'China' and 'Landslide' at most of her shows in London I've been too and I don't care for either especially when they took up most of the 2 or 3 solo songs slot. I'm so jealous of anyone who saw a Little Eartquakes show. It must have been a magical experience. I only started seeing her in 1998 Plugged - I should have seen the 'Dew Drop Inn' tour. Was VERY tempted but was a bit funny about seeing shows on my own back then. Silly decision.
Fave gig was prob Manchester 2001. What was yours?

Got a ticket to see her at the Royal Albert Hall in September. Looking forward to the album but not expecting anything too amazing. She's not done anything that fits that category for 15 years although I did like 'Night of Hunters' a lot. Long long wait.... I've tickets to RAH too - see you there! Yay although I put September instead of October because I'm such a dingaling. Very tempted to go wild and do Manchester and a Glasgow too - hotels and all. Never know how many times she'll tour in future. First in over 3 years which is long time for Tori.

Thanks for the review - I listened to it non stop for about a week not so much because I'm an Ed fan but because I was late to the party to listening to albums on Spotify and this is probably my first brand new one on that format. Hence I am probably responsible for some of the singles "sales" via streaming that many don't like. It was.a very simple but addictive album but find I wear off it quickly too. I don't mind the world music bits per se - it's lovely having Irish folk inspired songs so high in the charts but some of the lyrics are dreadful especially the 'Let's be a simpleton and strum a guitar' nonsense of 'What so I know?' and the endless references to drink and throwing up.
I love 'Supermarket Flowers' the most - sounds like something you hear in a modern hands in the air church maybe but it is touching. 'Galway', 'Dive' (great melody there), 'Eraser' and 'Save Myself are my favourites. The worse have to be the sickly 'Paean', the aforementioned 'What do I know' and the dull 'Hearts don't break'
It's a bit like fast food at the end of the day (or world buffet in this case maybe!) - most fairly pleasant but nothing of outstanding quality, That said there are far worse albums that do better so good luck to him.

I was enjoying listening to the original version of Kate Bush's "Never Be Mine" today. Its theme of the hurt/thrill of unrequited love still deeply resonates with me after all these years, as does the fantastic imagery. I then shuddered as I remembered the version she "reworked" as part of the very perplexing "Director's Cut" project - completely ripped out the heart and soul of the song in my opinion - how she thinks this is an improved version I have no idea (same can be said for all the songs she reworked - dreadful idea). Now Kate normally walks on water in my eyes, but this was a total misfire I still find hard to forgive her for (she basically ruined some great tracks and precious memories of them). Do you have any similar experiences, where your favourite artists have released something that has made you question your usual fanatical liking for them? Kate's Directors cut was a weird project - the version of 'The Sensual World' entitled 'Flower of the Mountain' with the actual Ulysses lyrics just sounded rubbish. The manic shrieking 'Lily' and rockabilly 'Rubberband Girl' are fun though. Fave artist is Tori Amos and many fans consider the mid-late 00s trio of 'Beekeeper', 'American Doll Possee' and 'Abnormally Attracted to Sin" a huge low point in her career with overlong concept albums with poor instrumentalists (i.e. Her husband), cliched insincere lyrics, bizarre plastic surgery photos in her artwork that they came up with the nickname Fori. I agree although do like a lot of AATS. PJ Harvey had to wait 15 years and over 10 albums to come up with her first misstep 'The Hope Six Demolition project' - it's not bad per se but too political and ordinary for such a genius.

DJ Sammy and his version of 'Heaven' Btw although I'd give the bland original by Bryan Adams 2/10, I'd give DJ Sammy version 0/10 so qualifies

I watched La La land and it was difficult to warm to the characters. It looked lovely and the music was good. Manchester by the Sea was ok. Have to check out Moonlight I guess.
